Editing & Expansion[edit]

As part of our project for our LING 300 class, my group and I will be making edits to the Coordination (linguistics) page. We plan to edit the existing article by adding instances of coordination in languages other than English and by restructuring the format to make the page flow better. More details to come. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Linguistics300 (talkcontribs) 15:35, 23 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I worked hard on this article. I will scrutinize any changes and additions.--Tjo3ya (talk) 12:24, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to making edits to the structure of the page to promote clarity, we also plan to add sections on coordination in French, Mandarin Chinese, German, Hiligaynon, and Japanese, and the early use of coordination. We welcome all constructive comments. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Linguistics300 (talkcontribs) 18:29, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

So far, the efforts have been mostly anonymous. I hope that the editors for this project start user pages that include some information about who they are and why they are contributing here. It's a good move for promoting good faith in edits performed.--Tjo3ya (talk) 13:08, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Concerning the response on my personal user page, I suggest that you editors also create such user pages. I get that it is a school project. What I am interested in learning about is the qualifications of the individuals performing the edits.--Tjo3ya (talk) 10:03, 7 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We are undergraduate linguistics students at UBC. Any questions concerning our qualifications may be addressed to our professor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Akwok20 (talkcontribs)

  • Akwok20, please sign your messages. On Wikipedia, you will have to assume responsibility for your own edits. As for qualifications, what matters here is whether edits are correct, well-written, and properly verified. In other words, this is the time and place to sweat the small stuff. I apologise for not signing my name correctly. I am new to editing Wikipedia pages and I thought this was automatic. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Akwok20 (talk)Akwok20 —Preceding undated comment added 01:05, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Syntactic category[edit]

Akwok20, I saw this edit, and I agree with User:Tjo3ya's revert. I don't have that book here, but in general, yes we frequently find words/phrases from the same syntactic categories, but the real requirement is that they have the same function. I could get up and find out how Huddleston and Pullum phrase this but I'm watching American Idol. Drmies (talk) 01:03, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, after I have read Poole's section on coordination, I thought that my understanding with what can be coordinated was wrong. Thanks for the constructive criticsm. Really appreciate it. Akwok20 (talk)Akwok20 —Preceding undated comment added 01:08, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The tables now being used for the examples in foreign languages are not good. The labels "gloss" and "English translations" are not needed, since that info is obvious. The alignment should be ensured using separate cells. Have a look at the tables being used in the article on small clauses. They are good. --Tjo3ya (talk) 13:56, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tjo3ya, thanks for the constructive feedback. Would you mind clarifying what you mean by alignment through the use of separate cells so we can fix it? I've just added a page on Chinese, so it would be great to also get some constructive feedback on that to improve it. Thank you Ramendanbo (talk) 19:46, 16 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Again, I recommend using the format of the tables in the article on small clauses. That format is most accessible to a general audience. Each English gloss appears immediately below its non-English equivalent. --Tjo3ya (talk) 03:39, 17 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Images[edit]

Hello, I'm not sure as to how to move the images around and how to structure them so that it won't get in the way of the text. Can anyone help with this? Akwok20 (talk) 04:38, 17 April 2019 (UTC)Akwok20[reply]

Chinese section[edit]

The section on Chinese mentions a number of linguists by name a number of times. Focusing on individual linguists in encyclopedia articles is not good. It's appropriate for journal articles, but it's not good for encyclopedia articles. If they are necessary, the names of the linguists can be provided in the notes. Have a look at the current edit war going on in the article on non-configurational langauges in this regard. Please write the section to remove all the names of linguists. Focus on content, not on personalities! --Tjo3ya (talk) 07:01, 19 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Project ended?[edit]

Apparently, the school project for this article has ended (according to the banner above). For the interested editors, please have a look at the quality of the resulting article in this regard. The contributions are problematic. The conventions used for examples are not consistent. The coverage is sporadic and not well rounded. This situation casts doubt on the value of these school projects for improving content in Wikipedia. The students have a deadline to meet with such a project, and they are therefore forced to produce something, regardless of the quality of what they produce.--Tjo3ya (talk) 07:50, 19 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
