Content[edit]

This whole page reads like someone edited it to convince their mother that ‘it’s a totally normal part of the secondary school experience, mum!’. Should there be more ‘scientific’ aspects to the article, such as news events regarding debs/grads, or controversies surrounding the event as a concept? Proposal to change name of Article[edit]

I believe the articles title should be changed to "Irish Debutante ball" as its current name may confuse it with the american "debutante ball" also the current title is a bit casual, of course its known as a "Debs" and "Grad" but it may confuse it with other Debutante balls worldwide. ProfPixels (talk) 17:23, 11 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • That was a bad idea. The US article is at prom, not "American Promenade Ball". (Also, you changed it to "Irish Debutante Ball", not "Irish Debutante ball" as you said, nor "Irish debutante ball".) I have not moved back to the old title debs and grads but rather to Debs (ball), which is better for the following reasons:
    1. Avoids the question of whether or not to capitalise ("Debs and Grads" vs "Debs and grads")
    2. Avoids the question of whether "Grad" or "Grads" is more common. Both are much less common than "Debs".

  • Good call, I just wanted this article to appear less fake so that's why I wanted the name change. Thanks !!

Proposed merge[edit]

@ProfPixels: @Jnestorius: @Guliolopez: Should it perhaps Debs (ball) simply be merged into either Debutante ball#Ireland or Prom#Ireland ("in Ireland it is known as a 'debs' or 'debs ball' and has a few national-specific traditions which inlclude..." etc.)? PPEMES (talk) 12:26, 29 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Do you propose to merge to Debutante as the hatnote states, or to Debutante ball or Prom as the Talk: page states? Merging to Prom is plausible, but certainly not to either of the others. jnestorius(talk) 13:46, 29 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi PPEMES. As discussed on the other talk page/thread (which, per your note and Jnestorius's comment above, I have "closed" to avoid confusion), I do not see that a merge to Debutante or Debutante ball makes sense. The subject discussed here (effectively a final year secondary school dinner dance), known as a "debs" or "grads" in Ireland, has almost no overlaps with the formal/historial/high-society concept discussed at Debutante or Debutante ball. Neither of those are a flyer for me. While a merge/redirect to Prom#Ireland is perhaps more plausible, ideally we'd understand the argument for that merge. What is the proposal/argument/rationale for the merge? Guliolopez (talk) 17:59, 29 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bad writing[edit]

The first paragraph under CONTROVERSY is full of run-on sentences and comma splices. It needs to be rewritten by someone who knows the subject. ◦◦derekbd◦my talk◦◦ 22:18, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
