According to whom? What's your source for this statistic? If there is a credible source to corroborate your statement about the population of Denton having now reached beyond 100,000 people, then I think you ought to go ahead and make changes to the article in this regard. (But, again, only if you have a credible source to cite that backs it up. Usually, for official population statistics, it is best to use the numbers published by the United States Census Bureau.) Wow, my apologies! Clearly I didn't do my homework. I didn't realize that the comment I was responding to was made almost 20 years ago. Music subsection is getting long[edit]

Do we really need to have a listing of every known/slightly known/virtually unknown band to have originated in Denton? There's a couple in there (Porn most notably) that don't even appear to be bands, just vandalism. At the minimum, this should be split off into a Musicians from Denton, Texas article or something like that. (preceeding unsigned comment was added by User:Wesmills at 23:20, 1 August 2006)

Questions[edit]

Hey. I was doing some editing, trying to improve the quality of the article, and I have a few questions. 1. Under Culture the article refers to residents of Denton as "Dentonites." Is this the correct word, or is it "Dentonians?" I've lived here for three years, and I would have said Dentonians, but I could be wrong.

I lived in Denton for several years, and usually we just said "people from Denton." I don't recall "Dentonites" or "Dentonians" being used except maybe once or twice. I think you could use either one, or both. --Ntmg05 00:10, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but that's the case for practically every city anywhere, except for maybe a few of the country's largest major cities like New York (New Yorker) and Chicago (Chicagoan). You see, literally every town and every city has its own demonym—from the tiniest small towns to the most sprawling major metropolises—and almost all of such demonyms are very seldom used. Among these "Dentonians" ;-) are there any other celebs/notable people than Mark Dalton (porn star) aka Jeremy James Son? My understanding is that he was a local track and field star and probably bodybuilding competitor before getting into porn; but are there any other nationall-known "people from Denton"? Denton Bible Church[edit]

Your contribution says nothing about why Denton Bible Church and Tommy Nelson are significantly relevant to Denton. If DBC is that important to the city, the information should be rewritten to explain why it's so notable that it should be included on the main Denton article. If DBC is not notable enough for inclusion in this article nor notable enough for its own article, that's not my problem. I would be willing to accept a bulleted list of all churches in the community as that's a fair representation, but a commercial for one church should not be allowed to remain in this article. My edit is actually the best compromise for the least amount of work as it correctly associates the notability for this information in the "famous residents" section (with Tommy Nelson's affiliation to DBC clearly identified) without requiring extensive (and probably original) research into Denton's religious scene. --Ntmg05 02:18, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Ntmg05's proposal. It's fine to mention large local churches, but there's been no evidence presented to support this particular pastor's notability (and I think the amount of links is excessive). If a small town's downtown district was dominated by a large or historic church(s) that would be worth mentioning.       • Comment: When I noted places of local concern, I meant that under the place of local interest guideline it suggested that local articles be merged into the city's article. Just to clarify on the article's Talk page: the compromise I presented and agreed upon by Jorfer in our Talk pages noted that Tommy Nelson is a famous resident (with evidence provided by Jorfer and attribution to Denton Bible Church) but removed the Religion subsection since Denton Bible Church itself is not particularly notable. A congregation of that size is not uncommon in the Dallas/Fort-Worth metroplex, nor is its recent move into a new facility. It's a big church that's important to the community but no more so than First United Methodist or First Baptist. Additional comments are welcome here. --Ntmg05 17:25, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just to note: There are at least three sub-articles here about Fry Street and even one about Fry Street Fair, but none about Denton's 100+ religious bodies. Denton Bible Church is certainly important to its membership. it is a large church and has very good growth rate. However, I would not consider it any more important than the other large churches and maybe not any more important than all the much smaller churches. "Just North" or just "North"[edit]

According to the Denton Chamber of Commerce, "North of Ordinary" is the correct slogan for Denton Chamber of Commerce's new marking campain. But the Denton Convention and Visitor Bureau's slogan for the city is "Discover Denton…and all that jazz". Should both be included with footnotes denoting the CoC's & CVB's own mottos? There's two possibilities. One, the official city web site has no motto or slogan listed, so there may be no official city slogan. However, the Denton Chamber of Commerce is contracted by the city to do economic development marketing projects 1. It's not immediately clear if "North of Ordinary" is a) part of the ED marketing campaign only, b) a separate slogan for the chamber in general but including ED, c) a slogan for the city at large, or d) all three, excepting individual city projects with their own slogans (like CVB's "Denton... And All That Jazz," which should not be considered a general city slogan due to it's association only with CVB projects). If I was forced to pick one, I'd go with choice "d) all three" as this casts the widest net given the available facts. --Ntmg05 21:52, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname[edit]

Fry Street Fair and Delta Lodge merger proposal[edit]

Fry Street Fair is marginally notable and would face a tough fight at WP:AFD. It is better off merged into Denton, Texas#Fry Street Fair. Delta Lodge has little notability independent of Fry Street Fair so it should be merged into here as well.     The biggest problem with this page is the lack of reliable sources, and the improper formatting of the references that do exist. Entire sections, including Demographics and Culture and recreation, go entirely unreferenced. As I mentioned, most of the current citations need to be filled out with author/publisher information, and unreliable sources such as MySpace need to be replaced.
    Demographics was filled in by a bot. It's all sourced by the first reference in that section. I intend to rewrite it. I agree, the culture and recreation needs references, not sure if I'll rewrite it or not. I'll fill in publisher info today. The MySpace link is the official home page of the organization; there's not much I can do about there.
  3. It is broad in its coverage.

    The history section seems light on info. Any recent significant events?
    I can include more content there.
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.

    Some sections seem to be written like a travel guide. This needs to be addressed.

Thanks for the GA review. I actually hadn't anticipated a review this quickly, especially since the last time I nominated an article for GA, it took about a month for someone to review it. With the current backlog, I expected the same thing to happen again. Needless to say, I wasn't completely finished with the article. I guess next time I'll hold off until it's full and ready. Absolutely, I tried and added a section but swiftly removed. I suppose if it does not pass the Chamber of Commerce test then it is not needed. George P. Bush will be a main player in Denton and the dangers of citizen empowerment. The time it takes for it to be included in the article will be interesting. I will make another effort soon. Wholly irrelevant info in the 'History' section of article[edit]

Just because a statement is true, correct, and historically accurate, does not make it relevant to this particular article, which is about Denton, Texas. The last paragraph (all one sentence of it) of the 'History' section of this article mentions that Texas voted to join the Confederacy via a statewide referendum in 1861. This is entirely true and correct. However, it is also entirely irrelevant to Denton and therefore does not belong in this article. It would be different if the statement provided info about how the citizens of 1860s Denton had voted in that particular referendum, but it doesn't do that. It is not a statement relevant to the history of Denton in any way, shape, form, or fashion. It belongs in an article about Texas history or American Civil War history or something similar. For the purposes of this article, which, again, is about Denton, the statement is wholly irrelevant and should rightfully be deleted. Alternatively, the statement could remain, if and only if someone can add to it in such a way that makes it relevant to the subject matter of this article. Otherwise, there is no justification for it being here. (It doesn't even make sense to the reader, as the section is all about the history of Denton, when all of a sudden, there is this random statement about Texas secession from the Union in 1861 that makes no effort to explain why such a statement is relevant to Denton's history.)
