(lead) DESS is a fee-paying school operating a not-for-profit system, managed by a Board of Governors. The land at its current location on Oud Metha Road was granted by HH Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai at the time; the main school hall named in honour of his wife Latifa.
- History
Established in 1963, DESS is the oldest British school in Dubai. The school was started by three families, with the help of Flight Lt F Loughman from the Royal Air Force Educational Corps. DESS was originally established to accommodate British Embassy children. The additional revenue is used entirely for school resources and staffing. The school body is divided into four competing houses: Blue Panthers, Red Jaguars, Green Leopards and Yellow Lynx. In 2014, Andrew Gibbs was appointed the first principal of DESSC (DESS and DESC) with Catherine Dando becoming the head teacher of the school.
- Curriculum
The school's curriculum is based on EYFS and the National Curriculum for England. DESS provides elementary education to students from KG1 to year 6, and, as of December 2016, has around 900 students from 46 nationalities, with a majority being from the UK. Core subjects focus on Arabic, Performing Arts, French, Geography, History, Islamic Studies, Numeracy, Literacy, Physical Education [PE], Science and Personal Health and Social Education [PHSE]. Extra-curricular activities are offered across sport, music, performing arts and play.
- KHDA Inspection Report
The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) is an educational quality assurance authority based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It undertakes early learning, school and higher learning institution management and rates them, based on the performance of both the students and the teachers, with ratings ranging from Unsatisfactory to Outstanding. DESS is a KHDA rated ‘Good’ school over the last seven years, in 2016 DESS secured a rating of ‘Outstanding’ in its British Schools Overseas Inspection and ‘Very Good’ under the Dubai Inspectorate’s new 6 gradings of inspection.

- Dubai English Speaking College
An automatic slipstream offers all DESS children places within Dubai English Speaking College [DESC], its sister college. Dubai English Speaking College is a private British school, following the National Curriculum for England, and a sister school to the Dubai English Speaking School. Founded in 2005, DESC is located in the Academic City, Dubai, UAE. DESC provides secondary school courses to students from Year 7 (also known as Grade 6) - Key Stage 3, and leading up to the 2 year GCSE course starting in Year 10 (Key Stage 4). The students then proceed onto the AS and A2 (A Level) qualifications offered for Year 12 and 13 (Key Stage 5), and, as of December 2016, has over 1100 students.
