Fanta Kone: Father died or mother died?

Following the BBC, we say that her mother died. The the AP says it was her father.

• The girl's mother died in Guinea a few weeks ago and the child was then brought by relatives to Mali. - BBC
• After 2-year-old Fanta Kone's father died in southern Guinea, the toddler's grandmother took her... - AP

Initially I thought there were a lot more sources for 'father' than 'mother' but it's mostly reprints of the AP story. The BBC story is a day older than the AP, so on that basis I'm tempted to say 'father'. That's an interesting resolution but I think we should still keep a bit of an eye on it. It's not obvious to me that the conclusion you draw (which is reasonable of course) has to be correct. She might have been visiting with only her mother and grandmother. Or only her father and grandmother. I was tempted to change it to 'parent' rather than 'parents' but for now I'm thinking your resolution is the best until we get more information - if we ever do.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 13:21, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

You bring up something I forgot to look at... Single Parent Family's is rather prevalent, and it is possible that one or other has not been around for much longer. Now given a ref for Father, and a ref for 'Mother, Parents could stand... However I agree, update as soon as more, reliable info is released... Gremlinsa (talk) 13:34, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Jimbo Wales well it took almost 2 weeks, however the official info has been released by WHO

Two more suspected cases, according to Reuters/Scientific American

Reported by Tom Miles of Reuters, published in Scientific American, citing WHO/CDC as source: Two Suspected Ebola Cases Reported in Mali, 57 Contacts Sought, 31 Oct 2014. Nothing on this yet on either the WHO or the CDC websites, but Reuters has an excellent reputation as a WP:RS, so presumably we will be seeing more on this soon. -- The Anome (talk) 14:27, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

New Mali outbreak

Different sources have different info on this... At best, the info is consistent with a nurse that died from ebola, however many make no mention of the infected doctor. also info regarding when the Guinean died is vague (Late october), and when the nurse died is missing.. best to wait for WHO report, posibly tomorrow or friday.... More info been released... the Second Index case .. "traditional Muslim healer in his 50s" admitted to Pasteur Clinic late 25 October, infected the nurse who was admitted on Sat 8 November, and died Tuesday 11 November. however Still very little on the Doctor previously mentioned.. No.. It's too late to test for Ebola however all the other Indicators were there, and he was the most likely suspect to have infected two other people. In fact he will be listed as Probable in most reports, but always included into the total..Gremlinsa (talk) 08:35, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

rename - New cases to Second index case

Considering that the Fanta kone index case appears to not have caused any secondary infections, however the new infections are coming from a secondary index case, confirmed not to be linked to the first.. I think the New cases should be rather named Second index case.. note that this index case came in only a few days after Fanta, and has already infected several others, thus this is the index case for the current infections.. I think that it is not correct to call even Kone an "index case". It is my understanding that there is only one index case. Gandydancer (talk) 15:58, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

As mentioned above, the Guinean was admitted (but not diagnosed) on 25 October [1] so "November" might not fit. Siuenti (talk) 22:43, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Okay did a little lookup..Fanta kone would be the index Case, and the imam from Guinea a primary case. as per [www.dorak.info/epi/epiinf.ppt this ppt doc] (slide 16) and also here..

Index – the first case identified
Primary – the case that brings the infection into a population
Secondary – infected by a primary case
Tertiary – infected by a secondary case

Political history section
