Picture of Deanery Garden[edit]

  • Firstly it's not called Deanery Garden House - it was originally simply "Deanery Garden" and is now known as "the Deanery".
  • The picture is a "charcoaled" version of an early copyright Country Life picture. (There is now a window to the right of the large chimney.) If I knew how I'd upload a CC picture of my own.

Brickyard Office[edit]

If of any interest I've just uploaded Lutoffice8Jl6-3786.jpg to the Commons and have included an image of the plaque on the building recording Lutyen's interest.I particularly like the history behind this image as it shows Lutyen's in a different light. The Lead[edit]

Looking at this article, which needs a great deal of work, I'm particularly struck by the concluding comment on his racism, which ends the lead. Whilst he certainly held racist views, they were commonly held by many (most?) people of his class and of his time. Are his views on race really amongst the most important facts of note about the greatest English architect of the twentieth century? KJP1 (talk) 10:41, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it doesn't belong in the lead and should certainly be rephrased from a direct accusation, for WP:NPOV. It should probably go lower down in a wider description of his reaction to India and Indian architecture, or in the context of his difficulties with his much more liberal wife, who was infatuated with an Indian, Krishnamurti for years. It would indeed sit much more suitably in a section on his work at Delhi and I shall move it. The wider issues with the article will have to wait the attentions of other, or until I recover sufficient wiki-enthusiasm. Are you a Bristolian? The article on the splendid Wills Hall is quite nice. Page number required for ref 1 - from Stamp, Gavin (2006). The Memorial to the Missing of the Somme[edit]

Does anyone have access to Stamp, Gavin (2006). The Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. Navigation template[edit]

Would it be worth creating a navigation template at Template:Edwin Lutyens or Template:Lutyens? Here is an attempt, based on another example.

This is based on our existing articles, particularly Edwin Lutyens and List of works by Edwin Lutyens, and Category:Works of Edwin Lutyens, but doubtless some redlinks should be added for items for which there is no article yet. I'd welcome some comments before making this live. 01:02, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

I'm no expert on templates, but to me it looks excellent and I think it would be of great help to interested readers. Is the intention it sit at the end of the Lutyens article, a la William Burges? I think the addition of redlinks would also encourage editors to go about filling in the gaps. KJP1 (talk) 13:26, 6 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I love it. I'd certainly be absolutely fine with including it in my articles. The only major criticism I can foresee is the size of it, given the volume of Lutyens' work, which means that not all links will be relevant on all articles. Also, we shouldn't include people/works that don't have articles and aren't likely to (on that note, his father is probably notable for his painting, but that would take some research into arty sources; Emily is certainly notable and I'm still surprised she doesn't have an article). If it was up to me, I would group the works by theme (country houses, New Delhi, WWI [or split into war memorials and IWGC], Midland Bank, etc) or period rather than location—as an obvious example, Thiepval should obviously be interpreted alongside his war memorials and IWGC work rather than just as being in France. By the way, we're missing articles on some of his foreign memorials—there's one in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and one in Mbala, Zambia, and a replica cenotaph in Hamilton, Bermuda.
