Kindly permit me two comments:

1. When this article was initially created, it was nothing short of an embarrassment, and I frankly admit that I had no interest in engaging in edit wars with pimply faced "contributors". Reading it now, several years on, however, I am astonished that is still listed as "Start-Class". This is actually a very good article - still a few bits missing, but from now on I will try my best to help.

2. I don't mean to be pedantic, but the original title of Mark Twain's book was "Following the Equator", in which he incidentally misspells Hankin's name as "Henkin", which on the one hand casts doubt on whether he ever met the man himself, while on the other hand it attests to the rapid impact of Hankin's findings - even though they were published in French, although most (i.e. the few) educated people at the time could read that language - and which misspelling was corrected in the British edition (under the new title 'More Tramps Abroad').

As an afterthought: anyone interested in Alexander von Humboldt will be able to place Hankin in context. 188.115.62.38 (talk) 21:47, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As the editor who began this article in 2007, let me say I take offense at the suggestion the piece was "nothing short of an embarrassment" in its early days. Wikipedia is about constant improvement. And we all try to do our best. I knew it was not all that could be said, but dammit, look where it has come. This article has clearly benefited from the work of some very knowledgeable and conscientious editors over the years, notably, User:Shyamal. I respectfully suggest you chose more civil language in future and celebrate the article as it is and can be, not on how it was. By the way, I was 48 when I began the article. Very few pimples. Chronology[edit]

There seems to be a bit of a hiccup in the chronological ordering, where some earlier events are mentioned after subsequent ones. Untangling this, Hankin appears to go off to India in 1892, before gaining his Sc.D. in 1905, again before working under Professor Charles Roy at his Pathological Laboratory in Trinity College London. Yet 1905 also finds him moving from Agra to Bombay. Either one of these threads is wrong or he was travelling madly to and fro.
