Existence?[edit]

I'm pretty sure the European Communities, made up of the European Community and Euratom, still exists. Blue-Haired Lawyer 10:32, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Granted the wording is off, though it does say "they were replaced" just after talking about institutions so it doesn't say for sure that it ceased. I will clarify the text.- J.Logan`t: 11:46, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If we look at the European Communities today, they are incorporated within the EU through the Treaty of Maastricht. It doesn't mean so much how we call it but if we, people of Europe have real feeling of 1 United community something like the "United states of Europe" as Winston Churchill had proposed at Zurich University. I can see that smalller countries of the EU, mainly from the ex-Eastern Bloc are the mauin supporters of the reforms +a few of big countries (Germany etc.). —Preceding unsigned comment added by VLADIMIR Skokan (talkcontribs) 07:16, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well the article does say that "This article is about collective nature of three defunct European international organisations (the EEC, ECSC and EAEC)", and that "The European Communities (EC) were three international organisations that were governed by the same set of institutions." Given that the official name of the European Court of Justice is still the "Court of Justice of the European Communities", I'm not sure we can say they're defunct.
The European Communities was always more for legal use anyway. Didn't people normally just call it the European Community (ie before Maastricht)? Blue-Haired Lawyer 12:46, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I missed very visible dism statement! Going to fix it too. And I have to say, it does get a bit confusing in terms of what people called it because everyone gets them mixed up. I most cases, I think people only talked about the EEC. Hence, when saying "European Community" they were shortening it from European Economic Community with total disregard for the other two. I think whenever they did mean all three, they used the plural - but it was rare.- J.Logan`t: 13:10, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This[edit]

Just above the timeline diagram, the article says

After the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon, the pillar structure ceased to exist, abolishing the European Communities. The legal personality of the European Community was transferred to the newly consolidated EU, although Euratom remained distinct. This was originally proposed under the European Constitution but that treaty failed ratification in 2005.

Which aspect specifically does "This" refer to at the beginning of the last sentence?
