If you mean the clickable map, it means nothing. It is just to differentiate one from another more easily (like in an atlas where each country is a different colour or shade). Thanks. That edit is so we can have a bilateral relations box in the article. You can't put a normal one there because there is no country data for ASEAN (and the flag is non-free) so I just copied the code for the template and adjusted it manually to include the ASEAN name without a flag.- _J.Logan`^t: 15:27, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see. However, you included code that only works for pages that are included in others (usually templates). The switch there in practice works but will always present the default option, so I'll go ahead and remove the extra code. EFSF article is 340 billion euros out[edit]

JLo, hi! Long time, no see. I still have restricted internet access but I've noticed that the European Financial Stability Facility article is out of date. The situation is this:

Last year the EFSM (European Financial Stabilisation Mechanism) was set up, which was a fast emergency loan of €60 billion from the financial markets using the EU budget as collateral. The loans took the form of bonds, the first of which were issued on 5 January.
Then the Original EFSF (European Financial Stability Facility) was incorporated on 7 June 2010. It was the EZ16 (later EZ17) finance ministers getting together to issue loans. The total guarantee was 440,000.00 million euros[2] (€440 billion). The German component of that guarantee was 119,390.07 million euros[2] (€119 billion). The loans took the form of bonds, the first of which were issued on 25 January 2011.
Then the Amended EFSF was created. On 21 July 2011[3] the Eurozone component of the European Council decided to amend the EFSF[3][4] to bring the total guarantee up to 779,783.14 million euros[3][4] (€780 billion). The German component of that extended guarantee was 211,045.90 million euros[3][4] (€211 billion)
All the above are distinct from the European Stability Mechanism

Actually, to be honest it looks mostly up to date. The EFSF may have been agreed to be enlarged but it hasn't been ratified yet (has to get past the Germans and the Slovaks first) so not all the article should be brought up with the tenses corrected etc. - _J.Logan`^t: 23:26, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Anyhoo, yes I know, but I'm fielding questions about the vote in the German Parliament tomorrow and people are getting confused about the 440 then, the 780 to be, and the German component of both. Since this is the kind of thing the 'pedia was set up to handle, I thought it'd be a good idea, especially since authorisation won't be complete until December and the kerfuffle is becoming deafining. Regarding your question about the Irish opt-outs, this board entry discusses the Protocols, and this Euractiv report gives further details. The Croatia Accession Treaty ("Treaty of Warsaw") will be signed on 19 December 2011 and will then be ratified by the EU27 member parliaments. The Protocols for the Irish and Czech guarantees will be in separate documents and those documents will be ratified by the EU27 member parliaments at the same time. economic maps[edit]

Hi, I've just been reading some of the stuff on the eurozone - excellent articles by the way - and was wondering how you produced your economic maps? I wanted to do something myself for a project but don't know what people use to generate these nifty little maps. Hopefully you're not doing this by hand with some painting app.

I'm just looking for the name of the app or addin which you use, not instructions on how to do this.

Just pop on commons:Category:Blank maps of Europe and commons:Category:Blank maps of the world and find a base map of what you want to show. ind a PNG though as they are easier to edit. If you're using Windows then Paint should be enough to just use fill to colour in each country according to the categories you want to show. If you're using Mac, then you'll need to download something like GraphicConverter of Gimp. Thanks. I do the odd bit from time to time. But it is too hard getting anything done here. Every time I try to do anything major I end up in a week long debate with some idiot who thinks 1+1=I hate EU. Then there is the FOP in Belgium box tickers. So it's only possible to do a lot on areas that don't matter, which just seems a waste of time in the end. I'm exploring more independent horizons. Maybe I'll come back and do some more work around election time but I fear it'll just get even worse then. Yes, I know: the EU isn't a popular institution these days, but folks conflate dislike of the institution with dislike of the articles about the institution and we end up with a tangled mess. Your eye for detail helped keep this at bay, but...well, there y'go: unfortunately we all have real lives to cope with...:-)

Anyhoo, my specific concern was about the article about the EU-USA trade deal. The article's been split off into a daughter article EU–US Free Trade Agreement, but much of the facts in Transatlantic Free Trade Area actually refer to the daughter article, and the article conflates the 90's floated deal, the abstract EU-US deal, the actual EU-US deal and the speculated EEA-NAFTA expansion of same. It also fails to make the subtle distinction between TAFTA and TTIP (one is kinda abstract, the other is the implementation of that concept: a bit like Iran hostage crisis and Operation Eagle Claw) So if I have time, I'll try to get that fixed, but no guarantees.

Anyway, if you do reconsider and start editing more frequently again, I'm sure the 'pedia would only benefit, even if you concentrated on non-EU subjects awhile. Regards, Anameofmyveryown (talk) 22:48, 11 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's not people confusing the two, it is people allowing their political bias to trump their (lack of) understanding of the facts at hand. Most British people don't realise that they are unusual in hating the EU so much and the rest of Europe doesn't have much of an issue with it.

Proposed EU introduction[edit]

Hello last year I proposed a revamped introduction for the EU, which I thought summarised the EU better. But it was met with opposition, for reasons you brilliantly explained in your page about calling a spade a spade. After seeing your posts I thought there was a renewed chance to have someone with more knowledge and objectivity to judge my proposal below.

Proposed introduction:

The European Union (or E.U.) is a union of 28 member states located primarily in the European continent. With over 500 million inhabitants it represents 7.3% of the world population, making it the second most populous democracy and first supranational union in the world. The EU is the seventh largest territory by area, extending clockwise direction lies the North, Baltic, Black and Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Sharing a common land border with Norway to the north and Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova to the East. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Albania to the South.

Research demonstrates the area has been inhabited since 40,000 BC. Although modern day Europe can trace a common heritage to ancient Greece and Rome. The present demographic is multicultural and multilingual with a diverse history of independent states. In the 20th century most European states participated in World War I, World War II (WWII) and Cold War. After the devastation of the WWI, European leaders called for varying visions of European integration as a means to secure peace and prosperity on the continent.

The efforts to achieve this began with the 1951 Treaty of Brussels between the founding inner six states, forming the European Coal and Steel Community. The subsequent signing of each European treaty and the accession of new member states saw the powers and territory of the EU expand, culminating in the 2008 Treaty of Lisbon. Today, as an economic and political union, supranational and intergovernmental decision making is used to implement common policies. EU law has legal supremacy over member states law and some institutions can act independently of member state governments in certain policy areas. In addition, the population share a common citizenship guaranteeing fundamental rights, including the right to exercise the four freedoms.

As the largest economy in the world, the European Union generated in 2012 a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of 16.584 trillion US dollars. Hypothetically, the combined member states military has the second largest military budget. Two member states possess nuclear weapons and have permanent membership on the UN Security Council. The majority of member states are members of NATO and among the highest developed in the world. The EU is represented at the United Nations, WTO, G8 and G20.

Use of English as EU language after Brexit[edit]

Hi,

I think the section on the use of (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impact_of_Brexit_on_the_European_Union#Languages) contains a number of inaccuracies that should be fixed.

Language rules are covered, amongst others, by:

Article 55 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU) (which lists the 24 'Treaty languages' in which the Treaty is drawn up);

Articles 20 and 24 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), which lay down the rights of citizens to petition the EP and to address the institutions in any of the Treaty languages and to obtain a reply in the same language, and Article 342 TFEU, which states that 'the rules governing the languages of the institutions of the Union shall, without prejudice to the provisions contained in the Statute of the Court of Justice of the European Union, be determined by the Council, acting unanimously by means of regulations';

Council Regulation No 1/1958 (as amended by successive enlargements), which lists the 24 official languages.

Changing these rules would require unanimity amongst the remaining 27 Member States: Article 342 TFEU explicitly says so. Since English is an official language of two of these 27 (namely Ireland and Malta), the status of English as an official EU language will in all likelihood remain unchanged, despite speculation to the contrary (the Politico reference). See for instance this Independent.ie article.

As for the claim that "Each member state may add a single language to the roster", there is no legal basis for this.

I've wondered the same, but I can't find anyone actually saying this. Keep in mind there is a difference as to how the treaties read and what they actually mean in legal terms and how they get implemented via regulations. Also, anything that is basically a vote in council comes down to more a political issue than a legal one. I fear citing the treaties against what the professionals are saying (senior parliamentarians and commission officials are a bit more than speculation) would come down to OR so if you can find anything other than interpretation of treaty articles, please add them.- J.Logan: 10:10, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There's the spokesperson from the European Commission Representation in Ireland quoted at the end of the independent.ie article I mentioned, who explicitly describes Ms Hubner's statement as "incorrect". You could also quote this parliamentary question and the President Juncker's answer on behalf of the Commission on 9 August 2017: http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?type=WQ&reference=E-2017-003658&language=EN

Anyway, the point both sources above are making is that when the UK leaves, the list of languages mentioned in Regulation 1/1958 remains unchanged unless there is a unanimous vote (by the remaining 27) to remove English, not (as wrongly claimed by Ms Hubner) that English goes and you need a vote to put it back in. That being the case, you are right that it's a political issue, but it is (politically) inconceivable that an Irish government would agree to deprive its own citizens of their current linguistic right to use English.

By all means add them. It's not for us to say which is correct (nor is anything politically inconceivable these days) but all we can do is report on what is being said. One group says one thing, another argues something different. What is there currently is not my opinion, merely what was in the sources I had when I first put it together.
