Merging[edit]

Hi All, I have proposed the merger of this material into Fanfare band. These articles are discussing the same type of ensemble. We need to find sources that document the exact instrumentation of this type of group. If the instrumentation is basically a British style Brass band that marches and includes saxophones, I am going to eventually propose that is material be covered as a section of that article since there are several different traditions being discussed in that article, such as New Orleans Style, etc. Telescopium1 (talk) 04:15, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Based on several CD sleeve notes, sheet music of compositions for fanfare band (de Haske, Molenaar, etc.) and web sites of some bands, my understanding is
  • fanfare (musical group), fanfare corps, fanfare battery or trumpet and drum band
    • article: Fanfare band (I should like to move it to Fanfare (musical group))
    • wikilinks: de:Fanfarenzug, fr:Orchestre de batterie-fanfare
    • mainly consists of brass instruments (valved / natural) and percussion
    • usually parades (a kind of marching band or parade band)
    • in Europe, America, and others
  • fanfare band, fanfare orchestra or fanfare orkest (in Dutch)
    • article: Fanfare orchestra (I should like to move it to Fanfare band)
    • wikilinks: de:Fanfare (Orchesterform), nl:Fanfare (orkest)
    • consists of saxophone, brass and percussion sections of ordinary concert band instrumentation and many flugelhorns
    • mainly plays on the stage, not parades much (a kind of concert band)
    • almost only in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg
I am anxious that they are not merged. --Tijd-jp (talk) 15:28, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Based on looking at these sources, I am not convinced that either of these types of groups are really unique enough to warrant their own articles. Couldn't this material be handled in the articles titles, brass band, concert band, or in an expanded, generic Drum and Bugle Corps article? It seems like the main difference is just in the translation of the name from other languages. These seem to be forms of those types of musical groups with a slightly different local name and instrumentation but not with a greatly difference function. Removed the proposed move as I am in agreement that these are two different types of groups. Telescopium1 (talk) 02:49, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
