Homo sapiens farmerendi[edit]

I just found out about the millions of people who farm on Facebook! Oh my God that's so sweet! Where are the anthropologists?? The dream of owning a farm has to be evolutionary, since we all eat and everyone wants to plant -- look at the euphemism for death, "He finally bought the farm"! Well, now there's an outlet for that drive! It's absolutely darling. 24.7.123.231 (talk) 16:31, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Guide[edit]

This link is to a guide, but from what I hear it is the best info out on the web. Can anyone confirm? Arigoni23 (talk) 03:31, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ad?[edit]

The Article looks like an Ad to me, not veryly relevant in terms of wikipedia, so what's about deleting it? --84.189.121.202 (talk) 21:38, 24 October 2009 (UTC):[reply]

hey, it's not an AD nor a guide.. its just letting you know how the game works. get real. the contributors had cited some VERIFIABLE SOURCE to this content, so how can it not be "veryly" relevantHydranoid15 (talk) 06:14, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Connection to MyFarm project[edit]

Inspired by Farmville, MyFarm project has been launched in UK as a real life analogue of Farmville where online users manage a real farm. Anyone is knowledgeable about the topic and willing to add a reference? www.my-farm.org.uk/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.55.180.8 (talk) 21:24, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Stereotyping[edit]

In farmville, one can only adopt a "black sheep", which is lost and lonely, as opposed to purchase it from the market. While the idiom "black sheep" has lost some of its negative connotation in modern usage, the idea of adopting it and giving it a shelter could qualify as an example of stereotyping, and a discussion could be initiated about the same.

No original research here. — Frecklefσσt | Talk 11:22, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why lost&lonely animals are rated so? Me and my friends are founding often ducklings, black sheeps and brown cows are both rare. --195.255.135.236 (talk) 14:09, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sterotyping? That is totally idiotic. If someone thinks the term "black sheep" is racial sterotyping, then they are just entirely too sensitive and probably need to get out of the house more often.—Preceding unsigned comment added by {} (talk • contribs)

While the original post is idiotic, so is yours: "Stereotyping" is not automatically "racial sterotyping". Spare us this hyper-PC nonsense, and stick to actual pro- and contra-arguments, e.g. that there is no obvious reason why an article on FarmVille should deal with either stereotyping or black sheeps.94.220.254.157 (talk) 00:19, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually there is. If it was widely discussed in reliable secondary sources that discuss FarmVille. But that isn't the case, so there is indeed no merit for inclusion. However if it was, then it would likely merit mention in the article even if it's 'hyper-PC nonsense' Nil Einne (talk) 10:33, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Limited Time Offers[edit]

Why remove these, they are part of the game and are viewable on many peoples' farms. Information about them should be included so please don't remove it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.117.175.170 (talk) 19:11, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Contrary to what used to be in the article, these offers DO still exist, at least when Farmville is accessed from within facebook. Only those relatively few people who play the game from Zynga's Farmville.com domain don't see them. I have changed this once already, but somebody reverted it, apparently without bothering to CHECK. Roaming Animals[edit]

I'm having a plague of locusts and my neighbor's animals are eating my seedlings! ;-) 24.7.123.231 (talk) 16:36, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am VERY upset with this game. 4-years and over $224 into this. Had no issues, until I got the baby eagle in the animal park. My game reloaded and I lost the whole park, plus everything I was saving to get the next enclosure done. Contacted support, did all they suggested. Nothing. After several messages with support, they asked I give them time. That was Feb.27! They haven't fixed my game, I can't play it. So, this should be within the bounds of a full refund. They took my game away, this was not my choice. I suggest to everyone, not to invest in this game. It is not worth it! Especially, when they rip off people for their cash and hold onto the product. BULLSHIT! It's at the point where I am done waiting for them to fix it. Done with this game. Give me back my money! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rkatharris (talkcontribs) 18:47, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Update: There are now four types of hens: white, brown, black, and gold, in increasing order of rarity. Gold hens do indeed lay golden eggs, but they are not "roamers". GodaiNoBaka (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:35, 8 April 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Flags[edit]

when do we get Finlands flag in farmville?

I am absolutely irate and throwing fits! Where is the flag for the Principality of Sealand!!! http://www.sealandgov.org/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.13.242.252 (talk) 01:22, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article is biased. Why would anyone want to say that lack of Indian flag, among SEVERAL others offered, sparked this much controversy? Unless one is Indian of course. I dont see how a lack of one flag can create controversy, rather than missing some 200 of them.

Please reconsider...

No, unfortunately. Lists of gameplay items and such add no encyclopedic content to the article, and are only useful to players of FarmVille, which is not the intent of an article. While they are nice lists, they often take up space and can make the page cluttered and harder to navigate for someone just looking to simply learn about FarmVille. Please check out WP:NOTGUIDE and WP:GAMECRUFT for more info on what is and isn't appropriate for articles, and why. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 21:43, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with SuperHamster about the content of the basic page on Farmville. It should be limited to encyclopedic content to ensure a clean and uncluttered page that simply explains what Farmville is for those who know nothing about Farmville and want to learn what Farmville is. However, I do not see why the recently deleted information cannot be on a different/linked page entitled "Gameplay of Farmville" (or a similar page) such as what has been done with MANY other games. ( for an example please see World of Warcraft Gameplay: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gameplay_of_World_of_Warcraft ) Lists are also a common item seem in TV shows episodes such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Family_Guy_episodes and many times lists are even included in main page content on many actors and actresses Wikipedia pages such as the "Filmography and awards" section found on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Gibson. These are just a few of the many examples where lists have been deemed worthy of inclusion into Wikipedia.

This is what makes Wikipedia such a useful site; the amount of information included within Wikipedia is astounding. Yes this abundance of information can become overwhelming but if controlled and organized properly within links to other Wikipedia pages/topics we can ensure that Wikipedia remains the fastest growing virtual encyclopedia without sacrificing any overall quality. Please take all this into consideration when further edits are made and consider creating a page for this type of content. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.177.108.68 (talk) 05:29, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. Providing gameplay information for free that others are trying to sell is in the spirit of the original purpose of Wikipedia: To Gather the Sum of All Human Knowledge. WaxonWaxov (talk) 15:15, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To gather the sum of all human knowledge can be taken too far though; if we were to gather the sum of all human knowledge, we'd have an article about the watermelon flavored piece of bubble gum stuck to my left sneaker. The purpose of Wikipedia is to educate people about what a subject is and what it is about; in this case, it would be to tell readers what FarmVille is (a game), what players do (manage a farm), along with some other tidbits such as criticism. Of course, as it is an online encyclopedia, it is true that Wikipedia articles can be longer and more in-depth as compared to your average encyclopedia. But when it comes to adding lists of plants that can be harvested, along with how much money and how many experience points come from them, we start getting off the purpose of the encyclopedia, which is to educate readers what a subject is and what its about. At this point, the tables full of information about seeds, coins, and XP will become only of use to someone who plays FarmVille, and of no use to the average reader, as a list of all the items and their values has no meaning to them; and the purpose of Wikipedia is not to be a game guide. Hope that shines some light on why lists of gameplay content are discouraged. See WP:NOTGUIDE and WP:GAMECRUFT for some more info. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 16:06, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have been tracking this since SuperHamster came in and changed the Wikipedia content to completely remove any and all hope for gameplay information at all (please see my earlier post on November 11th 2009). Since this change I was hoping for a different site to pick up the gameplay information and indeed a Farmville Wiki site (http://farmville.wikia.com/wiki/Farmville_Wiki) became available within days of the "SuperHamster reign". To access this site I always just type in "farmville wiki" into Google and click on the appropriate link. As of today Wikipedia has been topped on the charts and the farmville.wikia.com site has entered into the #1 slot for my typical Google search. I have faith in Wikipedia so please keep the ignorance to a minimal. People come to Wikipedia because they trust in the site and feel as if they will find the information they seek. Please don't let these people down and add a link to this site (since a page will never be created for gameplay as I discussed earlier with SuperHamster). This will only take up one line in the article and will allow many people to find what they are looking for when coming to the Wikipedia page on Farmville. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.177.67.198 (talk) 20:14, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Maximum Land Plot Size[edit]

At the moment, the plot size is not 24x24, but instead 22x22. The option is shown to be able to upgrade to 24x24 but there is no way of getting this at this time. I looked into it, and you are correct. In the end, though, I think it would be best to just remove the info altogether. Editors have been changing it back and forth, and there really isn't any point or value of keeping the particular information in the article. I reworded it as this:
As a player progresses, they can expand their farm (for a payment of either coins or cash) to allow for more room for farming, animals, and decorations.
Hopefully that clears things up. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:25, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merging Discussion[edit]

This is in reply to the suggestion of merging List of things that you plant on Farmville with FarmVille. I am against such a merge, based on that Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information and the list of inappropriate content on video game articles. Both mention how lists like these aren't appropriate for articles. I do not believe that having lists of items and specific info about them serves the purpose of the article, which is to tell a reader what FarmVille is, not how to play it. However, I am not against having a separate article for such a list, as per a statement made by 74.177.108.68 above in this section. Having a list would appease those who would like access to it, but wouldn't hinder readers who are here to read about FarmVille, not how to play it. So in my opinion, it would be best to either have a separate article on the topic, or to not have the info included at all. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 02:24, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe the list of items meets WP:N on its own; if it's not merged it may need to be nominated for deletion. Shadowjams (talk) 03:17, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since the article wouldn't be a place for the list either, I think deleting it would be the best way to go. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 03:23, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

FarmVille was removed from Facebook! Update the data, please. I tried to search for this application and it's not available anymore. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.124.4.174 (talk) 21:27, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking at it right now, and yes, it does seem to be not be available. This is probably only temporary, though; they are probably updating the game, or the servers just might be down. It happens every so often, and should be back soon. As such, FarmVille being down for a small period of time isn't of enough importance to be in the article, as it isn't anything special. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 21:46, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's definitely back now. 69.171.176.123 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 17:19, 29 January 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Linking to Facebook[edit]

Per WP:External links, links to social networking pages should be avoided. An exception to this is to allow official web sites maintained by the subject of the page, and giving further information about the subject. If the link to Facebook in this article is the developers' official page, it can remain; otherwise, it should be removed. Cnilep (talk) 17:58, 30 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So what?[edit]

Seventy million Facebook users play FarmVille, but more than 200 million don't, to say nothing of the 6.4 billion people who don't use Facebook at all. We cannot fathom why a game about plowing is so wildly popular. Is there any possibility of adding some analysis of this, even if it's just to the talk page? —WikiMarshall (talk) 10:27, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to me that such an addition would fall under the category of speculation and "original research," and outside the article's scope. It's a game. People play games. Why ask why? Drink Bud Dry.  ;-)

Seriously, though. I play the game, although I'm a rank noob. My niece (age 14) and sister (age censored) both play it as well. But I'm 40, and I'm her bratty kid brother, if that gives you a clue :-)

In my opinion (and it and two bucks will get you a cup of coffee), the biggest factor in the success of this game (and most of the other games released by that company for Facebook) is collecting. People like to collect things. Look at Pokemon. Collecting things is a huge part of the game, whether it is new types of crops, new types of animals, new types of trees, new achievements, or any of several other things in the game. You want to "catch them all," you want to do it more completely and faster than your friends and family.

Thee's also the element of creativity. You can make your farm into whatever you want it to be. Want to specialize in orchards full of exotic trees? You can do that. Want to become an expert in growing flowers? You can do that too. Want a virtual petting zoo? OK. With all of the different items that are available you can make your farm look like you want, and you can change its focus to whatever you want as well. This aspect is being reinforced with the upcoming release of "farm themes" which are special sets of items, aniimals, crops, and so forth to fit a general theme. Want an Asian tea garden? Or maybe a provincial vegetable garden. The game allows people to exercise their creativity and to a degree live any fantasies that they may have about landscaping or farming.

And last but not least, as pointed out in the article, the game does a great job of leveraging Facebook's social networking features. If you build a solid network of "neighbors" the game changes from a one-person farming sim to a collective effort, as everybody helps their neighbors keep their crops fertilized, animals cared for, barns built, etc. etc. etc.

So there you go. May not be your cup of tea, but 70 million is a lot of people playing the game, even if it's only a small percentage of the people using Favebook as a whole. 69.171.176.123 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 17:43, 29 January 2010 (UTC).[reply]

External link[edit]

This keeps on getting added. Anyone think it meets WP:EL? --NeilN talk to me 22:24, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would say no for multiple reasons. Number one, it appears to be a blog, and number two, it seems to be a fan-based site that has not been written by recognizable authority (which is also against video game guidelines for external links, which is a bit more in-depth regarded ELs in VG articles). The link also provides no further encyclopedia content, as it is mostly composed of video tutorials on how to earn XP, design a farm, etc., which serves as more of a game guide, rather than inform about the game. Perhaps a link to a game guide would be fine to add to the article, but if we were to do so, one of much more depth about the game and the basics of playing it rather than just some tips and cheats on how to earn XP would be more appropriate, and one written by more recognizable and reliable authors (such as the link to another wiki which currently resides on the article). ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:42, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I thought. If it keeps getting added I'll see if I can get it on the link blacklist. --NeilN talk to me 22:44, 25 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This external link has a 'dead link' citiation but why not just remove it, huh?

Removed "Managers" Section[edit]

Seemed like an advertisement and wasn't really relevant. Plus, there wasn't any citation for it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.207.96.194 (talk) 17:45, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Most FarmVille Players"[edit]

"Players accessing the game from within Facebook itself (as most FarmVille players do) can still see the offers as of April 2010." Can either of these statements be verified? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.226.103.16 (talk) 09:56, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite[edit]

This article needs a rewrite from top to bottom. Lots42 (talk) 03:48, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No doubt about that.
Since its launch in June 2009,[3] FarmVille has become the most popular game application on Facebook, Until it was surpassed by another Zynga Game Cafe World, which had over 75 million active users, with over 61.6 million active users and over 24.1 million Facebook application fans in June 2010.[4]

Huh wha? The citation for this is the "FarmVille Application Page" on Facebook, which has no statistical information whatsoever.Pete Ashdown (talk) 21:29, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was about to complain about the sentence. Looks like it needs work. Griffinofwales (talk) Come and join theSimple English Wikipedia 04:32, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is not true, the biggest online game of all time is farmville, as I have no evidence I cannot put it on. I read it in the well-respected UK national newspaper, the Independent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mspence835 (talkcontribs) 17:41, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I leave this page for a month and 9/10 of it has disappeared. Obviously there was a reason why.... why? Mspence835 (talk) 17:52, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Woman kills baby over FarmVille[edit]

Could this be added to the controversy section? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.27.236.6 (talk) 20:54, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds notable enough to me... although maybe more appropriate for another article. Maybe one that describes the phenomenon of people getting so engrossed in video games that they neglect their own responsibilities. --Dmfallak (talk) 05:20, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Jonathan Blow[edit]

Why does he criticism matter? I know, that sounds rude and is not meant to be; his opinion is valid for him. How noteable is he that his opinion matters to the article? Lots42 (talk) 04:02, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was published in a game design interview at Gamasutra. Blow critically analyzed the game mechanics Farmville. If you want to add other reliable, critical, reviews, be my guest. RJaguar3 | u | t 05:48, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a good article from the Escapist that again analyzes Farmville's gameplay. RJaguar3 | u | t 05:52, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Other similar games[edit]

There seems to be a range of similar games available. For example, there is Farm Story in the Android market. Would it help to add a list of such games to the article? m.e. (talk) 10:38, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No. Lots42 (talk) 07:29, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gagaville[edit]

Since the Gagaville promotional farm is loooong gone, I don't think we need the image of it anymore. Lots42 (talk) 11:41, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What about the sequels Tropical Escape and Country Esccape?[edit]
