Picture In Template[edit]

Does Anyone Object to Me Changeing the picture in the template of Gloucester To the Fisherman's Statue. I See It As A Much Better Symbol Of Gloucester CelesJalee (talk) 08:30, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a picture that you have permission to use, then I think that would be a fine idea. - Fearfulsymmetry (talk) 04:49, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pregnancy Pact[edit]

Why is there no mention of the alleged Pregnancy Pact which is what most people in the World know Gloucester for?

Quite. Salopian (talk) 02:25, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is a section about it on the here, I will add a link in the notable residents section, don't know if thats the correct place but I think it seems best atm Bacchus87 (talk) 22:50, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would consider it right to include them in the notable people section as they are from the town, while unnamed in the linked article the clearly have notability enough for a mention in this article. It does not go againt wp:not#news as that mainly covers individual articles, not a single line under notable people, which they do have enough notability for, the majority of people who have heard of this town will have heard about it because of the aledged pregnancy pact. Bacchus87 (talk) 15:31, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree and think it is very silly to include a reference to a news story in the list of notable people. I think most people, like me, will think "Huh?" when they see your link among the other people in the list. The notable people section includes people such as artists, sports figures, or public officials who have their own wikipedia article, people whom readers would be interested to know live in that town. (Arguably, the whole list could be deleted as trivia, but similar lists seem to be tolerated in many town articles, so I won't push for deleting it).
I can't see how unidentified people can be considered notable for purposes of the list -- if we don't know who they are or anything about them, other than that they were part of a news story (which may not even be true), there is no need to mention them in this list. Your argument leaves us with a very weak standard for adding to the list, as anyone who has been in a news story could be added, even if not identified, and the section would quickly fill up with junk.
Maybe someone else can add to the discussion. Fletcher (talk) 23:48, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation: not British[edit]

The audio file giving the pronunciation for Gloucester's name has a clear British accent, and was probably generated for the Gloucester in England. That isn't the way the locals pronounce it, though. (I'd do it myself, but as I live several towns over I may not be authoritative.) -- Dan Griscom (talk) 12:36, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

When I looked at this page and saw that the IPA pronunciation is given as /ˈɡlɑːstɑː/, I literally laughed out loud. I thought it was a funny little wiki easter egg, a bit of innocent vandalism, for us Massachusetts folk to get a laugh at our own expense. Yes, certainly us locals with the heaviest accents do pronounce it /ˈɡlɑːstɑː/, but all but the most oblivious of us know that in actual American English, it's pronounced /ˈɡlɒstər/. ("Where are you?" "I'm in Glahstah!" "Do you mean Glosster?" "Yah, that's what I said, Glahstah!"). It's hilarious enough that I was going to leave it in place, but then I checked the talk page and change log, and now I think it wasn't a joke. That's a little depressing, so I'm going to change it back to /ˈɡlɒstər/. I see that the anonymous user at 75.0.0.199 removed the link to the audio file and changed the IPA pronunciation on 24 April 2012. I agree with Dan Griscom that the audio file was decidedly British and should be removed, but the IPA code should be changed back, so I'll do that now.
