History Dispute[edit]

This award does not exist prior to 2001.

See AFL Record Season Guides e.g. 2008 page 509: "Since 2001, the AFL has made weekly nominations for the official version of the Goal of the Year and the winner has been announced at the end of the season."

That's because like the Mark of the Year it hasn't always been an AFL award. The AFL took it over a few years ago. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the award was decided by a panel of football experts on Network Seven's "World of Sport" program and during the 1980s and 1990s, the winning mark was determined by selected football journalists and experts. --Rulesfan (talk) 04:48, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I guess that ends the issue promoted in the tag as there has been no reply, so I'll remove it. Footy Freak7 (talk) 23:00, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But has the Goal of the Year actually existed before 2001? I don't see any evidence of this. Thefourdotelipsis (talk) 06:37, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
