Expansion[edit]

Looking for any interested editors who would like to join on this effort: @Zero0000:, @Huldra:, @Oncenawhile:, @Iskandar323:, @Al Ameer son:, @JDiala:, @Wham2001:. A lede is missing, and an expansion is required at the modern period. Also I didn't find information on which were the most prominent newspapers during the mandate period, so that is lacking. Makeandtoss (talk) 22:18, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Extras would be section on role of women, anti-Zionism, Islamism and the Arab Orthodox Movement. Possibly also magazines. And relevant pictures, ideally of people reading these newspapers. Also just realized I missed the Egyptian period in Gaza, but not sure if there was press established there. Makeandtoss (talk) 22:21, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Emanuel Beska wrote a number of excellent papers and one book about the Palestinian press in the late Ottoman period. I can send you some if you email me. Zerotalk 01:03, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zero0000: I have read quite a few of his and have them downloaded. I also have access to most materials. Do you have the name of Beska's book? Makeandtoss (talk) 08:29, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Makeandtoss: The book is "From Ambivalence to Hostility: the Arabic Newspaper Filastin and Zionism, 1911-1914". The papers I have on my computer are "The Origins of the term “Palestinian” (“Filasṭīnī”) in late Ottoman Palestine, 1898–1914", "Khalil al-Sakakini and Zionism before WWI", "“The Disgrace of the Twentieth Century”: The Beilis Affair in Filastin Newspaper", "Anti-Zionist Journalistic Works of Najīb Al-Khūrī Nassār in the Newspaper Al-Karmal in 1914", "Responses of Prominent Arabs Towards Zionist Aspirations and Colonization Prior to 1908", "Polemikos ‘Isa al-‘Isa and Printing Class: Too Much Borrowing?", "Arabic Translations of Writings on Zionism Published in Palestine Before the First World War", "Isa al-Isa's Defence Speech at the May 1914 Trial in Jaffa", "Shukri al-Asali, an Extraordinary Anti-Zionist Activist", "The Lands of As-Sirr Affair in 1914", "Yusuf al-Isa: A Founder of Modern Journalism in Palestine". Even those which are not about the press usually have a lot of information about the press because it is his major source. Zerotalk 09:18, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zero0000: I have read a few of them but these are more newspaper/writer-specific rather than a meta analysis of the press; is my impression right? Also I was thinking of creating a bottom of the page template vs a side page template/series like this one on the history of Palestinian journalism which would also include the writers and the newspapers. So far I am leaning towards the bottom of page template as a series might be over the top; what do you think? Makeandtoss (talk) 09:23, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
{Re|Makeandtoss}} A template would be nice but you should wait until there are more articles as templates don't look good if there are too few items on them. Zerotalk 10:22, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zero0000: The template would be included on each newspaper article and their publishers and editors, and they are quite many, so this shouldn't be a problem. I will start with the template later. Makeandtoss (talk) 10:59, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zero0000: Template:History of Palestinian journalism looks hideous and empty; any improvements come to mind? Makeandtoss (talk) 21:16, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Makeandtoss: I don't think it looks so bad and it will improve as more articles appear. Already it is missing one article: this one. Zerotalk 01:12, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Zero0000: The title of the template is linked to it. Should it be elsewhere? Makeandtoss (talk) 10:30, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it is necessary for the title to link to an article. I expected to see a link within the template rather than the title, but I know it isn't always done that way. Zerotalk 11:35, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It actually makes sense, I have added it to the bottom. Makeandtoss (talk) 22:02, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To editor Makeandtoss: Al Fajr (Jerusalem) and Palestinian Press Agency should be in the template? Zerotalk 09:07, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Added. Makeandtoss (talk) 09:13, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Piotrus: Thanks. My previous DYK nomination also required 2 QPQs which I filled, so I think this is an update issue, any idea how to solve it? Makeandtoss (talk) 11:26, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Makeandtoss, I a not sure what you mean? Everyone has to do 2 QPQs until the backlog is lessened, AFAIK. I just did 6 QPQs for my 3 recent DYKs, shrug. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:55, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Concerns have been addressed; waiting for a new review. Makeandtoss (talk) 13:14, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am happy to re-review this - very interesting subject. Earwig picks up nothing, so I will have a read of the underlying bibliography. Onceinawhile (talk) 14:52, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have reviewed the seven most-used citations for close paraphrasing or copyvio:

I could not see any remaining close paraphrasing. @Makeandtoss: I did notice that three of the citations did not refer to the relevant author and the relevant paper, only the edited collections. I have fixed three of the citations below; if you agree please would you update the citations?

Other than that, I am happy to (re)approve this. Onceinawhile (talk) 17:23, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Onceinawhile: Thanks for the review; I have updated the bibliography but not sure how to update the sfn templates; can you do one example showing how? Makeandtoss (talk) 20:33, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Makeandtoss: it's not working because in my three bullets above I added "ref=none" because there are no links on this page. If you delete that at the article, they will work with the new surnames (i.e. the authors not the editors). Onceinawhile (talk) 21:40, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Onceinawhile: Fixed, thanks. Makeandtoss (talk) 08:10, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Scope[edit]

Hmm thinking out loud: is the article's scope now History of Palestinian journalism, History of Palestinian newspaper printing, History of Palestinian newspapers (what about magazines?), or History of Palestinian press journalism (in contrast to broadcast journalism)? See History of Middle Eastern newspaper publishing; History of Spanish journalism; History of American newspapers. Thoughts @Zero0000:? Makeandtoss (talk) 22:01, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think "journalism" is correct at this stage because there is not (yet?) a natural place to summarise the broadcast or magazine genre. Also the historical distinction between newspapers and magazines is unclear and trying to separate them cleanly might be a problem. Zerotalk 01:45, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zero0000: I think the article can be considered "complete" now. Thoughts, and on the lede? Makeandtoss (talk) 13:12, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery[edit]

@JJMC89: WP:NFG says galleries that include non-free images are discouraged, but not prohibited. Three images in a gallery are not exactly over the top, and they are useful for the reader to be able to visualize the newspapers that are being discussed on the article.

WP:NFG: "Exceptions should be very well-justified and alternate forms of presentation (including with fewer images) strongly considered."

WP:IMGCONTENT: "The purpose of an image is to increase readers' understanding of the article's subject matter, usually by directly depicting people, things, activities, and concepts described in the article." Makeandtoss (talk) 09:54, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Even if they weren't in a gallery, use in the article wouldn't satisfy WP:NFCC#8. — JJMC89(T·C) 16:51, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
