Reorganizing Several Sections[edit]

It is unclear to me why all events after 1971 fall under the Independence heading. It seems that that section, while important, should be kept to only the events actually relevant to de-colonization. I contend that a new section be made, perhaps titled "Post-independence" and most of the information from the current independence section be moved into it.

The British occupied the UAE until 1971. Both the section "The rise and fall of the pearling industry" and "The beginning of the oil era" occur during this time period. For that reason, I feel that the three sections could be combined, perhaps with a couple of subsections.

If there is no problem with these few changes, I will do them tomorrow. If there is, I'd love to hear why.Jlevi (talk) 21:33, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Jlevi: To clarify, you're proposing that they be added under the section 'British era', correct? If so, I would support this. I would also suggest adding 'border disputes' under this heading.
This is a very tricky article to organize since the emirates were not really unified until the 20th century. Some of the content applies to all the emirates, i.e. pearl fishing, whereas some material is specific, i.e. Abu Dhabi's many border disputes. I would be happy to contribute toward some of the content, such as the Federation of Emirates in 1968, and Abu Dhabi's skirmishes with Qatar in 1888, but I am unsure how we should organize this. The emirates were distinct entities at different times, and they came under the dependency of other emirates different periods. I don't know if we should make different articles for the histories of the various or stick them in here. Maybe someone more familiar with the country's history would know how to organize the article. Anyway, for now, we can focus on the independence section. @Elspamo:I think I understand. If you're saying that not all emirates came under British control during this time period, I see the reason for care. The tribal nature of the various emirates and their shifting territories makes defining the history pre-unification difficult. I think I will concentrate on the independence section as you suggest, perhaps just shoring up the sources for the rest of the section. (Many of which are dead or suspect). It may be necessary to direct effort to the pages of the individual emirates in order to develop the overall history. I'm not sure. I'm still figuring out the how to manage interconnections. Thanks. One last note before I start tearing things apart: do you know why the particular break points for dates were chosen? Are they just arbitrary? (ie. 1971-2003, 2004-2010, 2010-present) At the very least I'd consider making a break point in 2008 for the global depression. Jlevi (talk) 01:05, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Jlevi: To be honest, I'm not too much of an expert on UAE's history. All I know about it is comes from what I've read in general books about the history of the Gulf. From my understanding, all the emirates were under British control from the 19th century and were known as the Trucial States. This much can be said. But they each had their own politics, internal and external conflicts, rulers, defining moments, etc. What I'm trying to figure out is how we fit the important things in this article when certain aspects relate to only one emirate. For example, explaining that Ras Al Khaimah was the stronghold of the pirate coast until the 1850s, or writing in depth on Abu Dhabi's numerous territorial disputes. It can be done, but it should be done carefully so as to signify the distinctness of each emirate and not lump them together as the Trucial States. I think it was only an administrative term used by the British as they don't seem to have been unified before the 1970s.
And no, the dates don't seem to have any specific rationale. I already started off working on the independence section by fixing the beginning paragraphs and adding information about the Federation of Emirates, so do go ahead with your changes. Elspamo4 (talk) 01:21, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Elspamo4:I see. It may be worth me working on the individual emirate histories then, so that this article can lean more heavily on those. We'll see.

Merge info from UAE page[edit]

Hiya. I'm going to port some of the more detailed info from the main United Arab Emirates page to here and simplify that page, then link it to this as a Main Article. Map[edit]

Why does this article have a map that only shows half of the Trucial Coast/UAE? It is a map of Oman, and needs to be replaced. Subject to any comments, I'll look to sourcing a new map that shows the whole of the Trucial Coast/UAE Rama226 (talk) 19:44, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good to me. There are a few good maps of the Trucial Coast on qdl.qa - I like this one specifically since it shows all of the main tribes and has roughly the same borders as present day UAE.
