Swedish company?

The text says it is not a swedish company when it also states that the founder Ingvar Kamprad (swedish) still holds absolute power over the company. This does not add up? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.226.208.240 (talk) 23:29, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Just because he holds absolute power doesn't change anything about the legal and technical structure of the company, so the company as a legal entity can be Dutch, whilst a legal non-Dutch entity (a person) can hold absolute power within that entity, not changing anything about the companies nationality. 212.64.81.138 (talk) 07:25, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
I must agree with the first poster in that the current view is problematic. Saying that a company is Dutch implies Dutch ownership and nothing else. If the company is a legal entity of Dutch law, that does not make it Dutch as such. Let me take an example. If a Dutch person built a house in Thailand, would that house be a Dutch house or a Thai house? To me, that house should be called a Dutch house. Alas, the current article does not agree. Please explain to me why IKEA should be referred to as a Dutch company rather than a Swedish company. Dsandlund (talk) 08:49, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Corporations are ditinct legal persons created under a particular law allowing their establishment. The laws that allow the creation of the "person" Ikea are Dutch, and that "person" is a resident of Holland. The Dutch "person" ikea always does what a Swedish person tells it to do. But if a car is built in Holland it is a Dutch car, no matter who is driving it or where it is being driven. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.213.255.149 (talk) 19:31, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

So IKEA should be Swedish then, since it was "built" in Sweden? I just think it's a very odd thing to say that IKEA is a Dutch company when the entire culture and origin of the company is Swedish. --94.255.146.227 (talk) 18:02, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

As a Swede, you might think it is odd, but that doesn't matter. Ever since Ingvar Kamprad moved his company to Holland to avoid paying Swedish tax, it became a Dutch company. Those are the facts. So it is a Dutch company. Everything you buy from IKEA says Inter IKEA Systems BV on the tag. The text should be changed back to the way it was.

81.170.234.118 (talk) 11:54, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Even IKEA itself says it is a Dutch company with Swedish roots, http://www.ikea.com/us/en/customerservices/faq#faqAnswers3-1 GB fan 12:22, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Nobody will think of IKEA as a Dutch company. Just because the HQ are in the Netherlands, it doesn't change the fact that it is a Swedish company. It is kinda like saying that Ford is a British company because Ford of Britain's HQ are in Essex. Just ridiculous. Norum 23:36, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

That's a different example. Ford's parent company is registered in the USA and Ford is thus American. IKEA's parent comapny is registered in the Netherlands. A company is "from" wherever it is registered and pays tax. Even if all their products are designed in Älmhult and they sell Swedish meatballs, if their corporate HQ is in the Netherlands and registered as a company in the Netherlands with the Dutch chamber of commerce, they are legally a Dutch company. Next time you buy a product at IKEA, note what the tag says: Inter IKEA Systems BV. (BV = Besloten Vennootschap) 81.170.234.118 (talk) 14:54, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

1% statistic

So after seeing this article, people have had some doubt of the "1% of earth's wood" statistic. Someone linked to a alternate article by the guardian that states that they may use almost 1%, here. This may need to be changed or not. Pokechu22 (talk) 01:41, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

IKEA promotional propaganda

I am absolutely amazed that a "crowd-sourced" edited article paints such a jaundiced view of one of the greatest tax-dodging companies ever conceived? IKEA sole aim is to make money. It's a business but it's a business that is run as a "foundation". A foundational charity that just so happens to be one of the richest in the world. Yet the "foundation" that looks after IKEA is also one of the meanest: Article

"The overall set-up of IKEA minimises tax and disclosure, handsomely rewards the founding Kamprad family and makes IKEA immune to a takeover"

So lets do the basic sums: net income €3.302 billion and the money it gives to charity (ie making a tax free) is about €80million. Works out at about at 2.42% off its total net. By happenstance when I do occasionally read an article on this site (usually with a large pinch of salt) it always amazes me how (despite having something called NPOV) how topics are so brazen, and shameful in promoting a very clear editorial line. I also know from reading that this site has been having trouble with paid editors writing articles. After reading this I am not surprised. 81.132.173.13 (talk) 09:38, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

MDF vs particle board

To the best of my recollection, the National Geographic Megafactories show about IKEA made a point of demonstrating that IKEA uses Medium Density Fiberboard, not particle board, in their products.Jafder (talk) 00:36, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Requesting merge from IKEA pencil

The IKEA pencil seems hardly notable enough to have a page. WP:N Σούπερμαν/Super-man (talk!) 16:50, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

There was a deletion discussion last week where merging was put forward as an option, but the discussion was closed as "keep". – Hshook (talk) 00:47, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
For your convenience, a wlink to that discussion. Obviously, i'm biased (i commented), but, though it was close, Merge was declined by the closing Admin in favour of Keep. Cheers, LindsayHello 15:57, 13 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I still find the page stupid, but if there was a debate already then there's nothing left to do. Σούπερμαν/Super-man (talk!) 09:11, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Countries with Ikea presence

There doesn't appear to be a point to having a section that only lists countries with more than 9 stores. Editors seem to be ignoring this criteria and adding any country with a store. I'm reverting these but I can't really blame people for trying to improve the potential of the section. If a small list is required, in addition to the main article List of countries with IKEA stores, shall we open it up to countries with at least one store? Maybe even make it a bar graph showing store amounts, or using other creative ways to present this information? We already have a map in the History section, which would be more at home in this section. Any thoughts? ~~ Peteb16 (talk) 17:44, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

I agree that the section is confusing. Is it possible to move the main article List of countries with IKEA stores to this page? Stwrhbgmon (talk) 06:36, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

That would make this page very long and people would be asking for it to be split again. ~~ Peteb16 (talk) 09:05, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
Ok, that makes sense. A bar graph with number of stores per country would be great to have and will give a good overview. I have no clue how to create this in Wikipedia though.Stwrhbgmon (talk) 10:58, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

IKEA Vs Ikea

I'm of the opinion that MOS:TRADEMARK takes precedence over MOS:ALLCAPS in this instance, and it should be "Ikea" WP:OTHERSTUFF notwithstanding, I can think of at least one other acronym based retailer that is not capitalised - Asda so it's not a hard and fast rule.

The archive pointed to in the edit summary is a single comment, not an in depth consensus discussion. Chaheel Riens (talk) 07:48, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

@Chaheel Riens: MOS:TRADEMARK actually says to capitalize IKEA. -- Beland (talk) 07:55, 27 May 2016 (UTC)
I'm not sure that can be taken as gospel as that particular example was only added boldly on 17th April here, without discussion and not entirely correctly - it may include them in the "use instead", but neglects to list them as examples of what not to use, which the others do - "Time, Kiss, Asus.", and as I also said - it's applied inconsistently, as "Asda" is not capitalised, not is Aldi, and probably others.
I'm not dismissing your argument out of hand, just saying that it's not been in place long enough for it to be considered a long-standing example of how MOS:TRADEMARK should be applied. It points the reader towards MOS:ACRO, but again this may not be applicable, as MOS:ACRO makes no mention of the context of a retail or business, and focuses on the more generic usage of acronyms within an article - laser being the example used.
I knew this for a fact because I checked MOS:TRADEMARK back in March when I initially changed them all from "IKEA" to "Ikea" here. Chaheel Riens (talk) 11:47, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

Kosovo and Serbia indicated on the map as having Ikea outlets already

Both Kosovo and Serbia are indicated as countries with Ikea outlets, but according to the article the one in Serbia is only under construction, whereas there is no information about a foreseen opening of a store in Kosovo. Either the article needs to be updated or the map needs to be corrected. Finding no sources on the internet, I am leaning towards the latter. 91.86.122.236 (talk) 08:58, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

Date of Founding

Article listed date of founding as 1943, linked source said 1953. I switched it, and I believe it to be correct now. Midwestcomix (talk) 01:34, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Well- it seems like that New Yorker article has a typo- it says the founder was 85 in 2011, which, if he did found IKEA at 17, in 1953, he would be only 75. I am going to switch the article back. Sorry everybody. Midwestcomix (talk) 01:43, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Missing CEO names

I noticed that the names of the CEOs have disappeared from the infobox on 7 June. As I have a conflict of interest (working for IKEA), is there anyone who can put them back? The names are the same as before; the reference is still in the infobox.

  • Peter Agnefjäll (Chairman and CEO of INGKA Holding)
  • Torbjörn Lööf (Chairman and CEO of the Inter IKEA Group)
