Regiment for 3rd Battalion[edit]

In the first paragraph of Senior Staff and Command section, someone needs to fill in what regiment. It can't just be "the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Div". at 04:13, April 19, 2006

  • Thanks for pointing out the omission. It was 3/9. I've added it to the paragraph. —ERcheck @ 04:27, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What happened?[edit]

Jones' supposed "seniority" to Hagee[edit]

"General Jones is one of two serving Marine Corps four-star general officers who outrank the current Commandant of the Marine Corps (General Michael Hagee) in terms of seniority and time-in-grade - the other being Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace."

How so? General Michael Hagee commissioned two years earlier than Jones. If someone cannot confirm this I will remove it. By the way, General Pace was commissioned from USNA the year before Hagee graduated. --ProdigySportsman 04:22, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
72.75.104.231 vandalized the page. According to his official biography, General Jones actually received his commission in 1967, the year before Hagee. Morinao 20:32, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
date of original commisioning has no impact on seniority in terms of rank. Relative rank is determined by time of recieving most recent promotion (and for ties, there is already a list of ranking...lineal number...put out by the selction boards.) Futhermore for flag officers, the job they hold can affect the lineal number over and above this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.82.34.187 (talk) 03:27, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Information needs to be update[edit]

General Jones (retired) has retired

The Marine Corps has only recently begun to take on a larger share of high-level assignments in the Department of Defense. General Jones is one of five serving Marine Corps four-star general officers who outrank the current Commandant of the Marine Corps (General James T. Conway) in terms of seniority and time-in-grade — the others being Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Peter Pace; former Commandant (awaiting retirement) Michael Hagee, Commander of U.S. Strategic Command James E. Cartwright, and Assistant Commandant Robert Magnus. [2]

General Jones is reported to have declined an opportunity to succeed General John P. Abizaid as Commander of U.S. Central Command, and is currently scheduled to step down on December 4, 2006 and retire from the U.S. Marine Corps shortly thereafter. [1]

He also was asked twice by Condoleezza Rice to be Deputy Secretary of State after the resignation of Robert Zoelick. He declined.1 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dreday13 (talkcontribs) 17:33, 24 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Party affiliation?[edit]

Does the general have any clear party affiliations at this point, and how likely is the label to stick after the NSA appointment? MrZaiustalk 15:00, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Opposition to Iraq diversion[edit]

This is probably the most significant information about him: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/11/us/politics/10web-jones.html "[General Jones] has said that the war in Iraq caused the United States to 'take its eye off the ball' in Afghanistan, and has warned that the consequences of failure are just as serious in Afghanistan as they are in Iraq. 'Symbolically, it’s more the epicenter of terrorism than Iraq. If we don’t succeed in Afghanistan, you’re sending a very clear message to the terrorist organizations that the U.S., the U.N. and the 37 countries with troops on the ground can be defeated.'” Ray Eston Smith Jr (talk) 19:25, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

General James L. Jones selected the first black Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Sergeant Major Alford L. McMichael.

Security Conference at Munich[edit]

I suppose the author meant the Munich Conference on Security Policy. Its an annual meeting of high class representatives from science, armed forces and politics in Munich sinc the mid 1960s. There is even an article about it. Pls fix that.--78.54.227.29 (talk) 04:44, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the quotes section from the article. The first quote was without any real assertion of why it was a notable quote. That's a pretty run of the mill type statement for the Marines. The second quote was an obviously satirical ice breaker made in the opening of a speech at a conference in Germany. Without context or common sense it's a conspiracy theorist's dream but with context it ceases to be a notable quotation at all. TomPointTwo (talk) 23:37, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jew Tie Joke[edit]

I suppose this is to be excluded?

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1165474.html U.S. national security adviser apologizes for Jewish joke

Hcobb (talk) 02:25, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody removed the mention of the joke out of BLP concerns. If this doesn't blow over quickly, we might consider carefully wording something about it... but considering how often public figures routinely stick thier foot in thier mouth with a bad joke or poor word choice, I'm not going to shed tears if this never gets included; one can prettymuch assume that any notable politician has made a gaffe like this. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 11:43, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really sure it's a noteworthy event in what is a brief biographical article. If the article were more substantial and it could be tied into a wider context then maybe but as it stands now its inclusion would seem out of place. TomPointTwo (talk) 18:34, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's certainly noteworthy enough to be included, but the problem is will it stay here - how active are the marine corp portal editors here? if there's much of a usmc presence here it's probably not worth putting back in, pick your battles and all that. 92.238.128.101 (talk) 03:40, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Clown Comment[edit]

Can we put in that Gen. McCrystal's staff thinks Jones is a clown? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.78.162.234 (talk) 13:19, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unless McCrystal gets canned for that interview, it's not even remotely encyclopedic. bahamut0013wordsdeeds 14:42, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The interview is notable since it is about an active duty general's criticisms of a commander in chief, and that all major news outlets are reporting on it, making it notable. However, I agree with Bahamut. If we say anything about the interview or McCrystal's comments, they belong in McCrystal's article, not here.DCmacnut<> 14:53, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

'Business roles'[edit]

Out of seven single sentence 'paragraphs' in this section, four of them start with "Jones was a member...". It's not only repetitious and boring, it makes the whole section, seem, to this Limey at least, rather badly written. This part of the article could do with being revised.

Ribbon's Order of Precedence[edit]

In both of the linked pictures where ribbons are visible (from 2003 & 2005), he is wearing the Canadian MSC in-between the Vietnam Civil Actions unit citation ribbon & Vietnam Campaign Medal ribbon, not higher as shown on the page.

Also, I thought that Americans who are authorized a second version of the NATO medal just add a Star? Or is the NATO MSM different? Gecko G (talk) 22:25, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
