Thomas Clay of Liverpool (died 1821)[edit]

The relationship between John Clay and Charles Swainson of Preston is easy to understand if John's father Thomas is also the Thomas Clay, father of Mary Clay who married Charles's brother Anthony. That's to be established. Charles Matthews (talk) 11:57, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This page gives what we could assume to be John Clay's baptism in 1796, parents Thomas Clay and Mary Lowe, father's occupation given as ironmonger. The same parents occur in baptisms for Jane (1794), and William Neal (1798). Charles Matthews (talk) 12:52, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"1818-20. Thomas Clay and Son. Ironmonger. 12 Moor Street and Parliament Street. (Pigot's Directory)" from [1] is certainly the right Thomas Clay ("Thomas Clay and Son" was advertising for ship smiths a dozen years before). Moor Street as home address in 1791.[2] Charles Matthews (talk) 13:21, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jane married Charles Inman (banker) 1817, Landed Gentry 1925, p.907. Daughter Mary married Anthony Swainson 1811. Charles Inman is placed helpfully [3] in terms of the Pickfords connection and Birleys. And on the previous page there is a family tree with his aunt Susannah and the Swainsons. "Thomas Clay Esq." of Liverpool seems to be unique at the period, and I'm going with that as identification. Charles Matthews (talk) 11:50, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mr Wylie[edit]

A listing from 1810 [4] of Liverpool would make David Stewart Wylie the unique Mr Wylie with an academy. Later directory listings have a "David Wylie" running an academy in Watmough Street (Everton), as well as D S Wylie etc. The WikiTree entry https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wylie-2102 has the correct date of death, 1856, for the Scottish Baptist who was in Liverpool; and gives a son David Wylie born 1797. I think therefore that the Wylie schools were in the same family; and the Roscoe Street is the relevant one for Clay's education. Charles Matthews (talk) 05:06, 29 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
