The ballot[edit]

St Aubyn promised to vote for "for the ballot, in the event of any constituency needing the protection of it". What does this mean? Vernon White . . . Talk 19:03, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Prior to the Ballot Act 1872, votes were cast publicly, which meant that landowners etc could exert pressure on their tenants to vote in a particular way. DuncanHill (talk) 12:05, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
