Open Evangelicalism - source?[edit]

Dean Welby stands in the Open Evangelical tradition of the Church of England - but does anyone have a RS for that? Springnuts (talk) 17:20, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Help With reference[edit]

I've tried to add a link to the BBC page that's reporting this, but I can't get the reference link to work properly. If anyone could fix this, I'd be most grateful. Thanks in advance. RomanSpa (talk) 10:40, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Summary for Can Companies Sin?[edit]

Can someone summarize the main arguments in his book Can Companies Sin?? Thanks. – Kaihsu (talk) 19:21, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No free images?[edit]

Surely there must be an image available of the guy. μηδείς (talk) 19:06, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is this guy living in seclusion? Has he never served a mass or appeared in public? μηδείς (talk) 03:14, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Still no image of this man? Can't somebody find an available picture for the spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican communion?anietor (talk) 06:29, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The currend picture is a disgrace. He is a man of the church, not a comedian.

Bereaved parents, ministry to[edit]

Another example of such ministry is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Plymouth, the Miscarriage & Infant Loss Memorial Book at Tintagel (now closed for new entries).

It's gone weird[edit]

The page has gone str_ange i wonder pls can somebdy fixed it this is the Pope we are talk about — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.148.214.48 (talk) 18:06, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Views on same-sex marriage[edit]

I asked a tangential question here: Talk:Religious views on same-sex marriage. – Kaihsu (talk) 10:50, 5 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Contribution to Radio Four series "Front Row"[edit]

I have no idea whether I heard it or not. Memory issues. But if he said something so memorable that you can remember what it was (and provided it wasn't trivial or superficially offensive) you might consider setting up a quote box for it. Success Charles01 (talk) 15:53, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

I think it would be good if this article were to mention that Welby appeared on the Radio Four series Front Row, where he made a contribution to the "Cultural Exchange" (a war requiem by Benjamin Britten) but I was not sure where this information was best placed.

Any suggestions? ACEOREVIVED (talk) 23:25, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Taxation[edit]

Talks about welfare, but not about taxes, which makes people poorer and is essential to finance the welfare system. --197.229.143.79 (talk) 14:18, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Escutcheon image and motto translation[edit]

Please would someone with the knowledge and power add an image of the escutcheon and a translation of the motto ? Google Translate renders it as "Through the Canal", which doesn't really make any sense ! Darkman101 (talk) 16:51, 24 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

'By fire, by sword'. It is a motto long used by the Welby family of Lincolnshire, which is where the personal side of the shield is from. Hogweard (talk) 15:39, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
But that doesn't tie in with his grandfather changing his German surname to Welby during WW1.78.17.33.95 (talk) 16:19, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Significant roles[edit]

In parallel with his role as Archbishop, he also holds other notable roles such as the president of "Livability", the country's largest Christian disability charity.[1] And I expect there are a number of others, but currently there is nowhere this fits in the article. Is it worth creating a new section to provide a home for this information?--Gronk Oz (talk) 13:35, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Justin Welby born Bernard Gavin Weiler[edit]

The article seems to want to hide the aforesaid. Two neighbouring blocks of paragraphs need to be written out clearer, and furthermore, list why the Bishop Welby name change. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.5.85.43 (talk) 12:05, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It was Justin Welby's father who was born Bernard Gavin Weiler, not the bishop. —  Cliftonian (talk)  14:34, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

R.A. Butler[edit]

Why is it that when this article lists positions that R.A. Butler held, it does not mention that he was Minister of Education? Vorbee (talk) 18:22, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thought for the Day[edit]

This article could point out that on Friday October 18 2019, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Right Reverend Justin Welby, did Thought for the Day. He talked about Christianity and mental health. Vorbee (talk) 06:56, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It may be better mentioned retrospectively when his term of office has passed. Who is not to say he might be called again to appear?Cloptonson (talk) 13:06, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

'Royal family' section[edit]

I see in page history there has been some back and forth about the Royal family section but the current outcome is that as an outsider (read: American) I have no clue what is being discussed. The current collection of dates, minutia, and quotes leaves me entirely in the dark as to the nature of the issue or Welby's involvement. Anyone have knowledge and skill to rework the section (again)? Retswerb (talk) 01:58, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Seconded. I've added Template:Confusing to the relevant section to flag the issue. Lockesdonkey (talk) 17:44, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Citing the British GQ Interview on YouTube[edit]

I am trying to understand why citing the British GQ interview on YouTube received a "better source needed" label. While the video is on a self-publishing platform, it is a product of a major publication published on channel attributed to that publication. chemica (talk) 10:02, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Royal family section.[edit]

The section egregiously violates WP:NOTESSAY and WP:OR in my opinion. Citations 109-112 are to legal and academic documents that do not discuss the topic at hand, which is the comments made by Markle. The authors use of such statements as "Journalists reporting this and the 8 March statement added the word "merely" at the beginning of the phrase "a private exchange of vows" used by the spokesperson and headlined their stories" and "They omitted to mention that the Act itself expressly states that it cannot do this, and this has been confirmed every time the operation of the Act has been examined by judges in connection with marriage law" and conspiratorial comments relating to the validity of the marriage of the Charles, Prince of Wales clearly show the attempt to synthesise a legal argument in the guise of our typically neutral prose. Charles's wedding itself is already addressed in the article on his wedding. I've trimmed the section to address the initial comments and the fallout. Most Reverend[edit]

Since part of the Archbishop of Canterbury's title begins "Most Reverend", should this article "The Most Reverend Justin Portal Welby"? YTKJ (talk) 21:37, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy Justin[edit]

BBC reports here: "The Archbishop of Canterbury has been fined more than £500 and given three penalty points after he was caught speeding in London. The Most Reverend Justin Welby was recorded driving at 25 mph in a 20mph zone in his Volkswagen Golf last year. The 67-year-old had been going along the Albert Embankment towards his official residence at Lambeth Palace. He admitted the offence in writing and was sentenced at a private magistrates' court hearing." I think this should be added. 86.184.129.4 (talk) 21:34, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Family Relationships[edit]

I fixed the wording about his mother's affair because the article linked to as a source did not say that the affair was after the marriage but said it was before: "had a brief relationship with Montague Browne prior to her marriage to Gavin Welby" is the wording from the cited article in The Guardian.

Also, I would suggest that most of the information about Welby's mother be moved into its own article since it seems she is famous for at least three reasons: 1) mother of the archbishop; 2) secretary to Churchill; and 3) famous ancestors. ElbonianFL (talk) 07:35, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is his middle name really 'Portal'?[edit]

I know it's mentioned in this source, which is reliable, but...is his middle name really 'Portal'? Even for a posh middle name, this feels like a stretch.—Ineffablebookkeeper (talk) ({{ping}} me!) 13:09, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
