Quite recently I was informed that the noble Kane family in Norway most probably was of Westslavic-German origin (presumably from Brandenburg as some sources tell) and descended from the von Kanitz family, in that case being an until recently unknown Norwegian branch.

Presumably the early Kanitz-Kanes dropped the obviously “un-nordic“ original patronymic slavic –itz ending and therefore changed Kan-itz into Kan-e. This presently only very thinly documented assumption is considerably strengthened by the fact that the Kane family´s coat of arms is identical to the von Kanitz coat of arms.

Interestingly enough a „Torald Kane-von Kanitz-Brandenburg“ must have married a daughter of King Hakon IV, Torunn (Thoron) Hakonsdatter.

The noble Kane family became extinct in the late 15th century (according to this Norwegian Wikipedia entry). If their possible von Kanitz ancestry - expressly mentioned in several internet sources (see above) - can be sufficiently proved it should be included in the Kane entry. --HeinrichChristian (talk) 16:22, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
