The guy is 8 times world champion, i think he deserves a better profile here I'll try to do something in the next couple of weeks, any help is welcome Echofloripa 12:31, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Facts[edit]

There are several facts wrong on the Kelly Slater write up. For one, he doesn't have a son, he has a daughter who is ten years old named Taylor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.165.96.157 (talk) 05:16, 27 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kelly's Opinion[edit]

Anyone have anything on what Mr. Slaters view on ho-dads or gremmies is?69.250.191.122 23:35, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

First Line[edit]

"Kelly Slater (b. Robert Kelly Slater February 11, 1972, Cocoa Beach, Florida) is the most successful professional surfer in the history of the sport."

Isn't this a little too vague? The whole line doesn't really say much. It sounds like an opinion. Maybe a bit of data should precede this statement to create a credible basis for the judgement. --Antonio.sierra 05:40, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ISRAELI INCIDENT[edit]

Not sure why this temporary stalkerazzi incident should be part of his permanent bio. Not really any defining moment. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.232.238.208 (talk) 02:20, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Muslim?[edit]

Is there any source around that Kelly Slater is Muslim? --Shamir1 00:51, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've been looking around on the Internet a little since I removed this, but haven't found anything. The fact tag isn't a bad way to go, but removing it and adding it back if it's found is appropriate too - religion isn't normally encyclopedic unless the subject has made a point of it. -- SiobhanHansa 01:58, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Syrian parents?[edit]

It is confirmed that Slater is of Syrian descent, but that does not mean that his parents are Syrian. Perhaps only one is, perhaps it is even a third generation,... Remember everything must be verifiable. --Shamir1 00:46, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, his parents are not Syrian, where do people come up with this stuff? In his own words, one of his great grandfathers was of Syrian descent. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shks100 (talkcontribs) 06:48, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually he's Syrian and proud. Many successful, intelligent people are Middle Eastern. So GOD where do you come up with your own assumptions! Heres an article: He's also part Muslim, and Im white by the way so before you get your honkey thong in a twist!!!

==[edit]

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 October, 2007 : - - Eight-time world champion Kelly Slater tested the Mediterranean waters Friday in a visit to promote Israeli-Palestinian peace. Slater, of Syrian descent, was visiting Israel for three days to join activities of the groups "Surfing for Peace" and "One Voice."

An 86-year-old Jewish member of Surfing for Peace, Dorian Paskowitz, asked Slater to come to Israel to promote the group's efforts to bring Israelis and Palestinians together through the sport, said his son, David. "My father asked him if he was ready to be not only great surfer but a great man as well," David Paskowitz said.

Slater sang with a local band at a Tel Aviv beach concert Friday and planned to visit areas around the country on Saturday, Paskowitz said. Israel has severely limited travel to the coastal territory of Gaza since the Islamic Hamas group seized the area in bloody fighting in June. Dorian Paskowitz, a retired doctor who has been surfing for 75 years, donated 12 surfboards to Gaza's small surfing community in August. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.109.148.129 (talk) 03:11, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He said in his autobiography that one of his grandfathers or greatgrandfather was of Syrian descent, that's all.

Birthplace?[edit]

The intro says, "(b. Robert Kelly Slater February 11, 1972, Cocoa Beach, Florida)". The story says, "Slater was born "Robert Kelly Slater" on February 11, 1972 in [[Manhattan Beach,California]." Which is correct? Unimaginative Username (talk) 02:25, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Movies[edit]

Kelly Slater has been featured in literally hundreds of films. Surely they can't all be listed. What is the criteria? Personal productions? Solo appearances? Theatrical releases? Films by his sponsors? Screen time? Distribution? Revenue generated? How does one determine the notoriety of essentially underground surf films? Xot (talk) 04:10, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:KSlater bookcover.jpg[edit]

Image:KSlater bookcover.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

=How does that work?[edit]

He managed to leave his brothers in the dust purely because he has a double jointed spine.

How the hell can you have a double jointed spine? And it aint verified. --218.215.16.1 (talk) 10:44, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

some people are under-educated[edit]

how in the hell can you be part muslim? that's a religion, not a race. what a stupid statement. some days he prays to Allah, other days he prays to God? my race is catholic and i'm a practicing italian? or am i part lutheran and part jewish? are people really that ignorant? RELIGION DOES NOT EQUAL RACE. i can't believe that some people don't know the difference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.241.143.189 (talk) 15:19, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Other Projects - In a band in the late 60s? / Blatant Vandalism[edit]

'In the late 60s Slater, along with friends and fellow pro surfers duke kahanamauku and Peter King, formed a band called The golfers. The trio released an album in 1998 titled Songs From the Pipe, a reference to the famous surf spot Pipeline on Oahu, Hawaii.'

Not only is Duke Kahanamoku not linked or even spelt correctly with capital letters but this statement must be a fallacy. Slater wasn't born until 1972 and the duke died in 1968. Slater IS however in a band called the Surfers with fellow surfers Rob Machado and Peter King who released an album with this title.

Also Slater was NOT born 'joanna' nor did he grow up in Muriwai nor is there a Muriwai bar in Santa Barbara so it cannot be listed amongst his favourite waves.

I propose removal of the 'joanna' and 'Muriwai' comments as well as the unverified claim that Slater's brother Stephen is nicknamed 'Skippy cornflake'. Also I propose to update and correct the paragraph about Slater's band with some citeable references. Sound good?

Request for protected status[edit]

Earlier today I removed vandalism to the page which claimed that Kelly Slater surfs at an Australian beach with people I know, put there by these people as a practical joke. As this is the second time these people have placed misinformation of this nature in Kelly Slater's article, perhaps the article qualifies for protected status? Thank you! Hymnodist.2004 (talk) 13:25, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I just reverted a third vandalism edit by the same group of people involving the insertion of the same names, mere hours after the last act of vandalism. I feel the need to protect this article is becoming urgent. Thank you! Hymnodist.2004 (talk) 11:51, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lebanese origins of Kelly Slater- Primary Sources[edit]

Kelly Slater mother, Judy Moriarity, is the daughter of William Bryant Moriarity and Helen Amin. Helen Amin and William Moriarity in the US Census of 1940 in Washington, District of Columbia https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K7SR-WBN.

Helen Amin was the oldest daughter of Hassan Amin and Mary Mickey and was born in Pennsylvania as seen in the 1920 US Census in Highland Park, Michigan https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZ7P-QBN where it says the immigration year of Hassam Amin was 1900.

In 1930 US Census in Washington https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XM29-Y9X it says the immigration year of Hassan Amin was 1907 but it could have been a mispelling of 1901

In the immigration list of 1901 Hassan Amin is said to have been born circa 1876 (a mispelling of 1886?) in Beirut, Lebanon https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JFVY-MJZ. Although in the Draf Registration for WWII of 1942 in Washington Hassan Amin is said to have been born in Tripoli, Lebanon https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKC4-8LVT.

Marriage certificate of Hassan Amin and Mary Mickey in 1911 in New York https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:243C-RH3

Hassan Amin death certificate in 1957 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP71-CGGY

This primary evidence settles that Kelly Slater's great grandfather was Lebanese not Syrian like some sources in the internet claim. Lebanon was part of Ottoman Syria or Syria which was a division of the Ottoman Empire. Which is why you as you can see in the sources it says Beirut, Syria/Beirut, Turkey or Tripoli, Syria. This however does not make the person Syrian but Lebanese since Lebanon is not in present day Syria todayChris O' Hare (talk) 15:55, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
