I propose to merge LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds men's basketball into LIU Sharks men's basketball. Although a rare process for a single university with two athletic departments to combine athletic departments. The university process is different than the more common professional sports activity of relocating and renaming a sport franchise- This is not a new org, franchise under new management, or other similar relocation-and-rebrand, etc... It's one university's basketball history. More common in college sports, universities change their athletic nickname and branding but in all precedent and we continue with one article on the sport specific program and university athletics article. The LIU-B Blackbirds article should be merged into history section. In this case, adding relevant history of LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post teams may be appropriate. The Sharks though, are more a continuation of LIU-Brooklyn's DI basketball program, including Northeast Conference membership/ NCAA DI eligibility, the majority of the student-athletes, head coaching, facilities, etc... The NCAA championship appearances are those of LIU, not one team nickname (Sharks vs Blackbirds). The current Sharks article as-is gives the false impression to readers that men's basketball is brand new as of 2019-20. Additionally the same procedure is relevant for LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds women's basketball to merge/rename to current LIU Sharks women's basketball. There's 3 categories of teams with the LIU athletic unification, 1) sports like basketball that were active on both Brooklyn and Post campuses with reduction to one DI program and D2 post athletes trying out for positions. 2) Sport programs at Post campus that were D2 and elevated to D1 under LIU unification, like Lacrosse and football. 3) New teams added to the LIU Sharks athletic program such as women's hockey and water polo. Support merging Blackbirds, oppose merging Post. The reality is that Post's athletics department was disbanded, and the Brooklyn campus's athletics department made changes to accommodate those displaced by that. The most prominent of those changes was a name change. But it's not a new department, not separately notable, and doesn't need a separate article. However, the former Post athletics department, although defunct, is a separate entity and is sufficiently notable for its own article. oknazevad (talk) 23:42, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
