Name origin[edit]

Is there any reference for the claim for the origin of the name Ladysmith ? The date (1900) is suspiciously close to the Siege of Ladysmith (ended February 1900), which was a major headline-making event at the time and a matter of passion for many British Americans.Wefa 16:55, 11 November 2007 (UTC) Also the issue of mining seems to bear some similarity to South Africa and for this reasons it seems likely that there is some connection. Is there any information on this? For instance Randsburg, California and Johannesburg, California were founded around the same time for similar reasons. I've added solid references for the name of Ladysmith. Smith's renaming of the town for his new wife seems improbable to me too, but it's the uncontested local explanation. What is the history of Grant Town?[edit]

To the south of Ladysmith on Hwy 27 is a bunch of buildings with a aign that says Grant Town. What is that about? Why is it there? -- DMahalko (talk) 02:34, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

After the tornado wrecked much of Ladysmith's downtown in 2002, a local businessman constructed some commercial space south of town. Some businesses started out there, but over the years they have withered. I can't find a source online, but that's what I was told. Jeff the quiet (talk) 04:03, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This makes no sense. Flambeau is French for "torch"; it has nothing whatsoever to do with cliffs or rapids. I don't think the Ojibwe name could be in any way linked with the name Flambeau Falls.
