Edits of May 15, 2013[edit]

I removed a bunch of stuff from this article today, as it just doesn't belong. List follows with explanation:

The simple stuff first. I changed the markup on the subheadings in the athletic section to the proper style.
Any given term that you might want to Wikilink should only be Wikilinked once, at its first use in an article. This is just FYI, cause the editorial content that contained the overlinking has been removed. For both 1 and 2, see WP:MOS.
The editorial content in the athletics section was way out of guidelines. Individual students or faculty (exception: principals) are never to be named in a school article outside of notable people in the notable people section. (see the next point for more on that). The only achievement that the school article guidelines deem worthy of inclusion in a school article are state or national level championships. Not playing in the championship game and losing, not sectional or regional champs, just state champs. As the editorial content accompanying some of the listed sports consisted of nothing but the previously mentioned two categories of content, it was all removed. The state champs were mentioned in the lead to the section, but the reference was to the school's website. It needs to be an independent reference, so later today, I will look them all up on the IHSAA's site and reference them. See WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG.
The Notable people listing should only include people that you can show notability (per Wikipedia standards for inclusion found at WP:N) for with either a Wikilink or enough referencing to show notability for the creation of a biographical article on them. Specifically on the ones I removed: Being married to someone notable does not make you notable. With some exceptions for great achievement, most college athletes are not notable. That brings us down to Ms. Komara. She can go back in if you show enough referencing to create a biographical article for her. But if you are going to do that, why not just write the article and then put her back and Wikilink it? This is all per WP:WPSCHOOLS/AG and WP:NLIST.

Wikipedia is edited by consensus. For some classes of articles, like schools, a community wide consensus was established on what should be in them. If you wish to change that, start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines. Uniformity in similar articles makes Wikipedia much easier for readers to use as a reference source, which is why we edit Wikipedia in the first place! Todd Smolinski[edit]

To whoever keeps adding Coach Todd Smolinski to the list of notable alumni: Either do it correctly (which still may not work) or stop.

The notable alumni section is not for people folks associated with the school feel are important. It is only for people who meet the subjective guidelines that would qualify them to have a biography on Wikipedia. From my research, Coach Smolinski doesn't.

This is what is required to have a biography on Wikipedia:

Multiple reliable sources, completely independent of the subject, that discuss the subject in detail. This is called the general notability guideline. The terms in blue are links. Some notes on this:
- Reliable sources are not User generated. This eliminates Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. Reliable sources have established vetting policies and reputation for same. This eliminates 80-90% of the Internet. Newspapers, Magazines, TV & radio news, books and respected academic journals are examples of reliable sources.
- Independent means not connected to the subject in any way. For Coach Smolinski, that would eliminate anything connected to LCHS, University of Minnesota or himself.
- In detail means just that. Articles about meets he competed in, or teams he was on are not detailed coverage of him. Mention in an article does not show notability.

For athletes, there are some easier ways to get to notability. Being on an Olympic team does it. Participation in the Olympic trials does not. (Sorry don't recall the policy link for that one). Setting a national record would do it. Being named a first team All-American in a major publication (AP, ESPN, USA Today) would do it (per WP:NCOLLATH). Playing on a national champion team does not. Winning conference titles does not. Setting conference records does not. Being named conference athlete of the year may, but probably not for a minor sport like swimming.

So, if you think you've got an article on the coach, write it, then add him to the alumni list. Please don't add him again if you don't. Thanks. John from Idegon (talk) 09:24, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
