Becky Award?[edit]

I can't seem to find any confirmation that it's an actual award given annually as suggested in the article. There's a radio transcript of a 2006 edition. Was it ever awarded otherwise? --Thomas Craven (talk) 20:16, 29 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely not yearly (opening sentence of https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=44298, in 2019, says "It's been a while since the last Goropius Becanus Award" and mentions 2007) and I don't know whether the nomination discussed there ended in an actual award that year. Have you looked at it in the last 5 years? Four of the five most recent entries on the page right now are about Chinese or Japanese (Judo: martial arts neologism or ancient philosophical term?, All-purpose word for "glamorous woman", Tang (618-907) poetry in Min pronunciation, Om, sumo, and the universality of sound)... If you know the facts about the site's topic mix in recent years, then you should acknowledge the facts. When you don't acknowledge the facts, then by "Grice's Maxims" you're expressing implicit skepticism.
