Kogawa??[edit]

Isn't Joy Kogawa Canadian? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.235.251.198 (talk) 06:03, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but the term "Asian American" often applies to Canadians as well as US residents. Kogawa in particular is taught in Asian American Lit courses because of her treatments of the camp experience and of the atomic bomb. Aristophanes68 (talk) 01:10, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The same holds for Ondaatje. We probably need to establish which parameters we want to use for Asian American. In my experience, Kogawa and Ondaatje are taught as Asian American authors whereas Middle Eastern Americans are not (see below).Aristophanes68 (talk) 16:47, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Although there may be overlaps in literature courses for the sake of comprehensiveness, Asian Americans are usually defined as people of Asian ancestry and American citizenship, meaning the United States. There is such a thing as Asian Canadians, of course, but for the purpose of this list, it would be incorrect to list Ondaatje, or any other Canadian citizens, as Asian American, since they are (usually, unless they have dual citizenship) not in fact American. María (habla conmigo) 17:27, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Only if we define American as USA. Canada is American too, as are all the Spanish American countries. Is there an official Wikipedia stance on the definition of American? Aristophanes68 (talk) 17:57, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The most common and widespread usage (whether it's on Wikipedia or elsewhere) is that an American denotes someone from the United States. It may not be politically correct, I agree, but that's usually how it works. For more info, there's American (word). Therefore, I highly discourage including Canadians on this list; perhaps a new list for Asian Canadian writers can be created? María (habla conmigo) 18:04, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A list of Asian Canadians would be useful. Until then, because of how commonly Kogawa and Ondaatje are categorized as Asian American, I created a separate section for them and placed an explanatory note at the top. I hope this solution is satisfactory. Aristophanes68 (talk) 01:43, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm in agreement with María. Canadians are no more Americans than are Chileans. Kogawa may have been taught in Asian American Lit courses, but this in no way makes her an Asian American writer With respect, I see no indication that Asian Canadian writers are "often" described as Asian American writers. As it stands, the claim relies on one source (Cynthia Wong) and her consideration of two writers (Joy Kogawa and Michael Ondaatje). I support the creation of a list of Asian Canadian writers - easily done by cutting and pasting the current "Asian Canadian writers" section. Victoriagirl (talk) 23:38, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have added several references with regard to Kogawa. At the same time, I see your point about Kogawa and Ondaatje being exceptions rather than the rule with regard to Canadian authors. I wonder, however, as American studies branches out from simply focusing on the USA to include Canada and Spanish America, if it will be useful to keep the different lists together, or at least linked. matching this page to the Category list[edit]

I've tried to make sure that all the people on this list also appear on the category page, but I may have missed someone.... Also, some of these writers are Middle-Eastern and aren't usually considered Asian American.... Aristophanes68 (talk) 01:12, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

dividing list into smaller units?[edit]

The list is getting a bit unwieldy. Should it be divided into alphabetical units? Or separated into Chinese American, Japanese American, etc.? Aristophanes68 (talk) 17:49, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Asian Americans[edit]

We'll need to go through the authors and make sure they have AsAm WikiProject tag on their talk pages.... Aristophanes68 (talk) 02:40, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of Asian-American writersList of Asian American writers – the common name of Asian Americans, does not include a hyphen, as such the article should be moved to 'List of Asian American writers. This is consistent with the name of the parent article Asian American as well as similar articles such as List of Asian Americans. RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 00:19, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Survey[edit]

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's policy on article titles.
  • Oppose on the basis of grammar. Compound phrases that modify a noun should be hyphenated, so "Asian Americans" is fine, but when it modifies the noun "writers" it becomes "Asian-American writers". See WP:HYPHEN.--Srleffler (talk) 03:08, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:HYPHEN (see User:Srleffler's comments above). —  AjaxSmack  04:01, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per WP:HYPHEN. "Asian American" can be a noun, but in this case it's an adjective, and should appropriately include a hyphen when preceding the noun it modifies (here "writers"). --BDD (talk) 17:43, 13 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What about S. P. Somtow?[edit]

Thai born (kin to the royal family), raised in England, lived in the U.S. and Thailand, back in Thailand again; holds dual Thai and U.S. citizenship?

Reformat list?[edit]

Hello! There will be an edit-a-thon focused on Asian American literature tomorrow, and it was suggested that the list be reformatted so that names appear in alphabetical order (much like the List of African-American writers). I agree this is a good idea, but wanted to bring it to the talk page first. Megs (talk) 22:26, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I decided to WP:Bold, and reformatted the list. All information from the subcategories was folded into the alphabetized list or added to the list of additional resources. Megs (talk) 13:46, 12 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good! Thanks! If you ever go to MELUS, look me up! Aristophanes68 (talk) 21:43, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
