Victoria Principal[edit]

Huh? Victoria Principal is filipino?? Coojah 09:43, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't find any mention of this in the Victoria Principal article or with a quick web search. I've placed a [dubious ] tag. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 05:45, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's been a long time with no response. I removed this listing. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 02:05, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

removal of Benny Paulino[edit]

I removed Maj.Gen. Benny Paulino from the list of notable military figures because he's not Filipino. He's a Chamorro from Guam. He's also my boss. Please don't mistake Filipinos and Chamorros though we have much in common culturally due to both Guam and PI being former Spanish colonies.Jlujan69 (talk) 06:47, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are two websites, with questionable reliablity (1, 2) that state that MG Paulino is Filipino. I agree that he shouldn't be listed, due to the shakyness of these sources, but can you please provide sources where it says he is only of Chamorran ethnic descent?--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 04:06, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greg Oden really half filipino?[edit]

I haven't seen any proof of this. 68.117.153.215 (talk) 02:41, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To the best of my knowlege - he isn't even a quarter.

Senator John Ensign of Nevada[edit]

From this ESPN article: "Then Arum's guests showed up: Nevada Sen. John Ensign and his two children. Arum introduced me to the senator and we chatted for a bit. Turns out Ensign is a huge boxing fan and one-eighth Filipino, so he was excited to meet Pacquiao and have him pose for a photo with him and his kids." --Anyo Niminus (talk) 02:26, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I add the reference to his article and will be adding him to the list. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 12:42, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Clay Rapada[edit]

Please do research on this.... Born in Virginia... He's one of four Fil-Ams in the Major Leagues the past two years. He was sent down to the minors after a stint with the Detroit Tigers. His mother's side is Filipino.

Nomination for removal[edit]

  • Monessa Catuncan is listed in the military section, which as you all know who have been editing this list for a while, I have been keeping track of. She is an officer, and pilot, in the United States Air Force, as cited in the article used as a reference; however, I do not know if that is notable enough to warrant being included on the list. Opinions? Comments Suggestions?--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 03:56, 31 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No comment has yet to be recieved regarding this nomination for removal from the list. I have not seen any source that shows that she is notable, in so far as she has not been awarded any medals or commendations for valor, has not commanded a unit of significant size, and is no different (other than her ethnicity) than the hundreds of other officers and pilots of the United States Air Force. Unless given good reason, by the end of June, this person will be removed fromt he list by myself.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 12:54, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No comment has been made, and individual does not appear to meet notability guidelines. Without objection Cpt. Cauncan, USAF is being removed from this list. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 08:12, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't been on Wikipedia for a while, but I've also wondered about that entry and completely agree with you. Apparently there was just an article on her in a Fil-Am newspaper. That's it. Absolutely non notable and no different as you said other than her ethnicity. That's the problem with this list. People think that just because someone is Filipino in a particular field with a very brief mention of them somewhere means that they are notable. For example, just because a Filipino American works in the entertainment industry doesn't that make notable, yet for some reason people feel the need to include them herefrom time to time. Notability, in my opinion, also means accomplishments and further mention from more sources other than Filipino or Fil-Am news media. --Ðysepsion † Speak your mind 15:49, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Owen Kline has recently been placed on this list. His mother, Phoebe Cates, was already 1/8thChinese Filipino, meaning that unless Kevin Kline has any filipino heritage that means that he is at most only 1/16th Chinese Filipino. And keeping similar criterea, such as that needed by an individiaul claiming to be Native American needing to show that they have at least one eighth ancestry, than Owen Kline would not meet said criterea. Furthermore, the individuals wikiarticle only claims that he is a living Jewish American from New York City. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 12:54, 11 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The lead sentence of the Filipino American article says, "Filipino Americans (Fil-Am for short) are Americans of Filipino ancestry." That seems overly-inclusive to me, but that is what it says. Perhaps this should be discussed on the talk page for that article. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 02:34, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is same inclusion critria used on all such 'fooian American' articles: people to immgrated to the US from 'foo' and became American citizens, and their descendants. No reason to make this list different. Hmains (talk) 02:40, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If this is the case, than anyone could claim to be from X as long as they have any percentage of ethnicity in their heritage. Which as you say due to the statement of the subject article is VERY inclusive indeed. To expand that logic, that would mean that anyone is who has spaniard heritage, no matter if it's as far back as only in the 16th of 17th century, than could claim to be a Spanish Filipino. But alas, it appears that consensus already is working against me and the proposed removal of Owen Kline appears to be, at this point, moot. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 11:26, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, this does not appear to be the same inclusion critria used on all such 'fooian American' articles. From a few lead sentences:
  • German Americans (German: Deutschamerikaner) are citizens of the United States of German ancestry, with traditions and self-identity based on German language and culture.
  • A Spanish American is a citizen or resident of the United States with ethnic origins in the southwestern European nation of Spain.
  • Japanese Americans (日系アメリカ人, Nikkei Amerikajin?) are Americans of Japanese heritage.
  • Korean Americans (Korean: 한국계 미국인, Hanja: 韓國系美國人, hangukgye migugin) are Americans of Korean origin.
  • Greek Americans (Greek: Ελληνοαμερικανοί, Ellinoamerikani) are citizens of the United States of Greek origin.
  • A Canadian-American is a person living in the United States who was born in, raised in, or possesses ancestral ties to Canada.
  • An Australian American is a naturalized American citizen with a significant relationship to Australia, ...
  • A Vietnamese American (Vietnamese: người Mỹ gốc Việt) is a resident of the United States who is of Vietnamese heritage.
British American, Irish American, Scottish American, French American, Mexican American, Chinese American, perhaps others, do have similar inclusion criteria to Filipino American. Anyhow, if there is to be discussion on this, it should take place at Talk:Filipino American. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 00:00, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Other than using some differnt words, I do not see any difference in the end result: a 'fooian American' is someone who immigrant to the US from 'foo' who became an American (citizen) and their desdendants. Some writers in various like to try to assert something different, but the actual results belie them. I am not arguing this is good or bad, only that this is criteria that is used. Hmains (talk) 03:07, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Words have meaning. The difference which I see is that some hyphenated Americans (Fil-Ams among them) are defined in the relevant WP articles as US citizens having any degree of ancestry in an ethnic group rooted outside of the US ("Filipino" is defined as "an ethnic group in the Philippines", rather than on the basis of citizenship. Ethnic groups in the Philippines does not make it clear which particular ethnic group that might be.), others (e.g. Korean-American, Greek-American) limit that group to persons who originated in the other country (i.e., were not American born), others (Canadian-American) speak of "ties" or (Australian-American) "a significant relationship" to the other country. It seems to me overly inclusive to define a person whose only connection to the Philippines is an ancestor ten generations back as a Fil-Am, but it's not a hot-button issue with me. Also, as I've said previously, this discussion should take place at Talk:Filipino American, not here. -- Boracay Bill (talk) 23:50, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's interesting to say the least about how inclusive or exclusive the definition of an ethnic group within the US is. I was attempting to find a reliable source which to cite for any change to the definition listed on the Filipino American wikiarticle, but none that meet my satisfaction nor the satisfaction of the reliable source guideline, so it's very much up to the interpretation of the individual, especially with the largely inclusive nature of the language involved. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Personally, I think that 1/16th is the minimum that should be allowed to claim any ethnicity, least we all claim to be african, but that doesn't matter really. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 03:01, 14 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I hereby am making a suggestion, but will not follow through unless I have consensus, or no one opposes the change by 01AUG2009, that all dance crew members are deleted from this list and are merged into a single entry for that dance crew with Filipino American members of that crew are listed within that entry. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 12:26, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. ----Ðysepsion † Speak your mind 14:59, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Keeping with consensus, and no object stated, dance crew members have been merged as previously agreed upon. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 10:46, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Cassie Steele has recently been added. By birth and heritage she is Filipino Canadian, however, her wikiarticle says that she is currently living in Los Angeles. By the broad definition given at the beginning of the Filipino American article she would fall under those considered to be Filipino American. I will ask for citation supporting the statement of her current location of residence on her wikiarticle. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 10:26, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No reference provided on subject's wikipedia article that supports statement of individual's residency in the U.S.; Cassie Steele removed. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 22:08, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have marked several individuals with fact or citation needed tags. I am making a general notice that if the individuals are not backed up by a reference from a reliable source that they will be removed after one month of that tag being placed. Be thankful I just don't remove them outright. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 10:17, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral, but want to point out the following sources which might establish notability [1][2][3]. There are other sources which list her as an author or conference participant, but these (none of which I have seen beyond what is viewable online via google) seem to be secondary sources which have written (if briefly) about her. The first one is titled "Filipino achievers in the USA & Canada: profiles in excellence". Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 01:38, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
While not indepth, inclusion of these references, would sure meet the multiple references criterea set forth in part 1. Looks like then, this listing will be kept. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 09:07, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Major General John R. D’Araujo Jr.[edit]

I have removed the Major General because this individual was added without a wikipedia article, or any citation. I attempted to find some citation to back this removal and found some inconsistancies between several reliable sources that could be cited. Although multiple sources says that the individual is Filipino American, some sources place the date of promotion to Major General to 1943, while others place the date of promotion to 1993. Furthermore, if the promotion date is 1943, than noway this individual could be the same person who retired from FEMA[1].

Sources that state that he is Filipino American without mention of his date of promotion to retiring rank:

After reconsideration I will add the individual with citation that does not state year of promotion. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 01:18, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We should go through those individuals with citations as supporters as to why the are included in this list, where their is no cited reference within their wikipedia article (if they have one) does not say they are Filipino American, and check if those citations meet the criteria set forth as reliable sources. If they do not such as Philboxing.com and biocafe.com, then they should be removed. I shall not begin unless we have a consensus that it should be done. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 03:27, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. It's something that should be done. However that is a very very daunting task. I tried to do it a while ago, but no longer have the time. 99% of those who visit this list just want to include someone without even looking at the instructions at the top of the page which they should. I agree in being more thorough. I just don't know how long that would take. ----Ðysepsion † Speak your mind 03:21, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it should be added to the to do list of the wikiprojects which this page should be watched over. So far us two have been the most diligent at looking at new additions. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 10:15, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

inclusion of Alexis Monsanto[edit]

i understand he is a successful fashion designer in LA he heads his own atelier and his creations have been worn on the red carpet as well as by various actors/actresses in their shows —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.106.197.66 (talk) 07:29, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Offensiveness[edit]

The title of this page is quite Offensive. I propose this page be renamed to "List of Prominent Filipino Americans" -Rixius 97.79.166.66 (talk) 09:13, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is not offensive, it's misleading. I am a Filipino American. Shouldn't I be listed in here as well? I agree with renaming to above. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.178.224.130 (talk) 15:35, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Manny Pacquiao?[edit]

Manny Pacquiao is a Filipino-American? That he is Filipino there is no doubt, but I saw nothing in the Wikipedia article about him to indicate that he is American. We'll take him, though.172.190.207.45 (talk) 06:55, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He's not. There's a note to that effect in the article, but not at the point where he was erroniously added this time. He seems to be added into the article every time he wins a fight. I've removed the recent addition. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 05:46, 20 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tim Tebow[edit]

A recent IP editor recently added Tim Tebow to the list of notable Filipino Americans. I would like to find consensus as to whether Mr. Tebow is considered a Filipino American based on the scope of who is a Filipino American as stated by its Wikipedia article.

Filipino Americans are Americans of Filipino ancestry

What is not in question is that Mr. Tebow was born in the Philippines, and is an American. What I would like to know is if that is sufficient to consider him a Filipino American? I am not going to argue one way or the other, but would like to see what the consensus is. If it is pro, he falls within the scope of this list. If it is against, he will be delisted from this list. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 13:11, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He could be if he has Philippine citizenship and thus Filipino by Jus sanguinis (by birth, if at least one of his parents had been naturalized as Filipino citizens). He can also be Filipino by Jus soli (naturalization) since he was born in Philippines and spent part of his life there, but only if he had applied for it and been approved. EDIT: I'm basing this off the *other* definition of Filipino-American. That of American-Filipino mestizos, that is, Filipinos of American descent--ObsidinSoul 15:59, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the relevant article regarding that Philippine nationality law. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 16:24, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, I linked it already (piped). :P And yeah, IMO if a source can be found proving that he has Filipino citizenship then I guess he can be listed here (doubtful though).--ObsidinSoul 17:13, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've boldly removed Tebow from the list. The Filipino American article linked in the lead sentence seems to be the basis for defining that term for purposes of inclusion in this list. That article says, "Filipino Americans are Americans of Filipino ancestry." I see no indication in Tebow's article that he has Filipino ancestry (nor, for that matter, that he obtained Philippine citizenship). Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 02:06, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hm yeah. 'Ancestry' does denote ethnicity rather than simply citizenship.--ObsidinSoul 02:23, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Wtmitchell on this one. Elockid (Alternate) (Talk) 15:14, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Jason Day[edit]

Jason Day should be removed from the list. He's Australian not American (he lives here so he can play on the PGA tour). See Filipino-Australian for clarity, or his own bio in Wikipedia.

Subject may also be a Filipino Australian, but also falls into the scope of Filipino American, given that he resides in Columbas, Ohio (verified); he can be both.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 12:08, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

George Sunga[edit]

How come this person is not on the list???? He was the producer of two very successful comedies in the 1970s...."The Jeffersons" and "Three's Company," both were top ten shows here. He has reached a level in the entertainment industry that very few Filipino-Americans have made, and yet he is not on the list because he works behind the scenes...(Most of the people listed in your entries only made a tiny splash and are either C or D list celebrities). Below is the proof.
