California State Beaches vs. List of beaches in California[edit]

The title of this article implies to me that it is about beaches maintained by the State of California as part of the California State Park System, but I see that people have added lots of regional and other beaches to the list. I think there should be separate article List of beaches in California listing all named beaches in California. Stepheng3 (talk) 06:11, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've renamed the article and started a new list for CSBs. - Stepheng3 (talk) 18:32, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orientation[edit]

Why on Earth is this listed from south to north? -Branddobbe (talk) 04:17, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why not? --Stepheng3 (talk) 15:53, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Because north on top, south on bottom has been the inviolable standard in the West for like fifteen hundred years, and putting south at the top just confuses the reader for no reason. -Branddobbe (talk) 03:29, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If this were a map, I would agree with you. However, it's not a map. Many things that are not maps are ordered south-to-north, including the U.S. Interstate Highway System. --Stepheng3 (talk) 03:34, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested merge?[edit]

I would oppose merging the article List of California State Beaches with this List of California beaches, because the California State beach system, like State Parks, has its own specific rules and regulations, which can differ considerably from those on other beaches. More on the orientation issue[edit]

Since several other current list articles for the West Coast beaches are listed north to south, and since in the vernacular we often say "going up north" and "down south", it seemed reasonable and helpful to readers to organizer this list from north to south rather than vice versa. So I decided to BE BOLD and go ahead and change the order. I also explained in the intro that the list is not fully comprehensive, that it does however contain all the State Beaches, and that right now, two of the counties included also have a more detailed list article of beaches. We could still use some references. I think that the AAA maps for each area are a good reference for beach names? Perhaps this was how the list was originally compiled? I am in NYC so I don't have all the maps for the whole State of California. Invertzoo (talk) 15:30, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

One remaining question[edit]

There are a lot of red links in this list, but there are also a lot of beach names that are not linked at all. Is this a consistent choice? Does it mean that all the red-linked beaches should have an article, but the non-linked ones are not notable enough to deserve one? Or was this difference accidental in some cases?
