Runaway[edit]

This Means War[edit]

How exactly is this a notable subject?[edit]

Drones (both military and civilian 'toys') are becoming ubiquitous. It is therefore inevitable that they will appear in feature films. Accordingly, a list of films in which they appear amounts to little more than trivia. There might possibly be merit in a list of films in which drones have played a significant part - as demonstrated by significant coverage in third party sources (e.g. reviews of the movie in question which indicate that drones were central to the plot), but otherwise I can see no justification for an article. Yes, there is merit in this topic as reflected by some of the sources focusing on drones in films, so it is a notable topic. We can discuss criteria for including certain films on this list. WP:NOTESAL says, "The entirety of the list does not need to be documented in sources for notability, only that the grouping or set in general has been. Because the group or set is notable, the individual items in the list do not need to be independently notable." This is why I've used reliable sources to this extent. For example, I recently added Poltergeist because several reviews mentioned a drone being used in the film; I had just used one of them. For the more limited uses of drones, do we want to include more references to further validate their inclusion? I cannot think of a good way to group the films or categorize them that would not be original research. Can you think of some list criteria or grouping? WP:NOTESAL also states that "One accepted reason why a list topic is considered notable is if it has been discussed as a group or set by independent reliable sources". Can you point to sources giving a general discussion of the presence of drones in films, as opposed to reviews of individual films which comment on the presence of a drone? Yes, this talks about Good Kill, Eye in the Sky, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This talks about X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, RoboCop, and The Bourne Legacy. This talks about Good Kill, Eye in the Sky, and the in-development Blue Thunder. Coverage about Top Gun 2 has referenced Good Kill. Eye in the Sky, when released, will probably garner more thematic coverage. This mentions Dirty Wars when covering Good Kill. I understand. In creating these lists, I've struggled to figure out a way to group films better. Here are a couple of alternative approaches I've thought of. One is to separate into subsections, with the most relevant films in the top one (e.g., Good Kill) with more secondary films in the following subsection. Another approach is adding a column that says "Focus" or "Emphasis" or whatever to identify the use of drones as thematic or just a scene, but that seems tricky depending on the film, which is why I mentioned my concern of original research in my initial reply. I don't think we can know how ubiquitous drones may be. They're not exactly part of regular daily lives. Maybe we can do something like relegate the films with toy drones (Poltergeist, Force Majeure) to a footnote. A film like Transformers: Age of Extinction could be removed due to lack of repeat sourcing (I know because I strained to find a source for that one). Mohajer[edit]

I reverted the addition of Mohajer as seen here. While it looks like a candidate for inclusion (IMDb page here), I cannot find a good source outlining the premise for the film to establish its relevance for this list. I suspect that based on the age of the film, it may be more about radio-controlled aircraft than UAVs. Maybe it could be included in a "See also" section as a precursor to the 21st century films, but the need for a good source still remains. Does "X-Men" film belong on list?[edit]

I'm not presuming to remove someone's list entry—however, the flying mutant-hunting robots in X-Men: Days of Future Past were autonomous, not remote-controlled. Thus I don't think they can be considered drones per se. – AndyFielding (talk) 11:24, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The source that identifies this film as part of a set is The Daily Beast, which is quite reliable. The definition of a drone is quite broad, and it looks like it does not matter if the technology is autonomous or remote-controlled. I just came across this article after seeing it linked as a "see also" from Force Majeure, a film in which a drone appears for about 15 seconds, and read the AfD. I agree with the view many of the participants (including those favoring keep) expressed that the criteria for this list ought to be made more stringent. There seems to be a place for this article on Wikipedia, but work needs to be done (not only here, but in articles linking to here) to reduce the trivia aspect. - Sdkb (talk) 20:24, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
