Sortable table[edit]

Updated Data Required[edit]

It seems this page needs a bit of updating. I would think most people would say the Iceland volcano eruption of 2011 and the South American Eruption following that would classify as major eruptions.

Grímsvötn erupted on the 22nd of May 2011. It was only a 4 but still caused a tremendous amount of disruption across the Northern Hemisphere. 2011_Puyehue-Cordón_Caulle_eruption then erupted in June 2011 in Chile causing a massive plume over the Southern Hemisphere. The Earth was definitely having a stretch in these tow months. :) However, I'm not sure what the VEI was for this eruption; it may also have been below 5. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.148.132.188 (talk) 23:30, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is a pity to mix fact with fancy. At the very least one has to consider that unverified material is subjective data. It is difficult enough to find actual fact from contemporary records. According to Popocatépetl "A violent VEI-6 eruption in the mid-to late first century CE may have caused the massive migrations that settled Teotihuacan, according to DNA analysis of teeth and bones." so this may be a candidate entry. Merge discussion[edit]

VEI for Puyehue-Cordón Caulle[edit]

2A02:C7D:8639:1600:C94D:6639:68A9:799A, 2A02:C7D:8639:1600:F4DE:B544:B5DA:37F, or 2A02:C7D:8639:1600:5939:8B1B:3404:C86F, there are two problems with the edit you keep trying to make:

The reference you gave for your removal of Puyehue-Cordón Caulle from the list actually states that the calculated ~~VEI is 4.8, which is a lot closer to 5 than 4~~ magnitude is 4.8. Also, the same source says that the VEI from the literature is 5, and they reference the source that Wikipedia usually uses for data on recent volcanoes: the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program.
In the same edit, you changed the geological date of five volcanoes with no reason given in your edit summary.

In the future, for lists like this, where there are many factors involved in each entry, please propose your changes on the talk page first to discuss them with other editors.

The VOGRIPA source webpage for this eruption states "Magnitude: 4.800 (Calculated); Maximum VEI : 5.000 (Literature)". Volcanic eruption magnitude is not VEI (Volcanic Explosivity Index). Magnitude and VEI are different scales calculated by different methods. Volcanic eruptions may have equal or very similar values for their magnitude and VEI but that is, strictly speaking, only coincidence. GeoWriter (talk) 10:26, 30 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry only just realised this page is here. The VOGRIPA page states the eruption was 0.7 cu km, which is VEI 4. The reason other sources say VEI 5 is because some calculations put the eruption at approx 1 cu km. Other changes were to correct/add to/update dates for eruptions. We always report what reliable sources say for this kind of data. The Wired article is interesting, but not peer reviewed. (It was also written right after the eruption, so does not take into account any modifications of the observed data that may have been made later.) We go by what the VOGRIPA database says, because that's the most reliable source for volcanic data. Making your own calculations is original research, which we do not use in Wikipedia.

As a side note; the VOGRIPA site seems to be down at the moment. Did the BGS host recently redesign their site? — Gorthian (talk) 18:49, 9 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Flag icons[edit]

Table sorting and updating (again)[edit]

Where does the erupted mass 5,290 come from? I cannot find it in this referenced link, neither in the wiki links in the article's intro. The year 840,000 is correct, but what about the mass?

This article essentially duplicates List of large volcanic eruptions#<12KA (Holocene) minus the references. The cutoff criteria also seems to be a VEI of 5 for a volcanic eruption to be "large". - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 19:02, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
