First off, congrats to GregorB for taking the time to compile this list. However, perhaps we could improve it and amke it more managable. How about breaking it into sections? One option would be to divide it into historically significant lists such as Original members, Current members and Others, but we could also list them by department. Another idea would be to drop their birth and death years and just include years when they were made full members and years of death (as membership is usually for life). Well, thanks - for some odd reason I wanted to do this list, although it perhaps makes less than an exciting subject...
Partition into former and current members is certainly a good idea. The Academy is a big one, 130-odd members at the moment, and the full list may easily hit 400 or 500. I'd say original membership is a essentially a footnote, not a defining property. (Also, I've been unable to identify the rest of the original 16. There's also Lj. Farkaš Vukotinović, I'll add him later, but who are the rest?)
YOB is perhaps inconsequential, but provides a time frame and a quick information on the member's age upon being admitted. Falls into "nice to have" category, I'd say.
Partition by department would be very difficult because: a) it is hard to find department info for past members, and b) department structure changed with time (and info on such changes is also nearly impossible to find), i.e. in the past there were fewer departments.
I'd also like to add a short description such as "historian", "mathematician", "painter", "sociologist", etc. Otherwise it's just names and numbers, especially for redlinks with department membership info missing. Would that be an overkill?
I think we could split it into "Former" and "Current" sections right now, it is going to be more difficult to do it later. GregorB (talk) 13:36, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Btw I just found the academy's first publication published in 1867. It contains a whole lot of useful information, including its statute and probably the earliest academy-published list of members. The founding charter says that it can have one sponsor, up to 32 full members, a chairman, two general secretaries, up to 16 honorary members and a undefined number of corresponding members. On page 29 it goes on to list them (data correct as of 28 July 1867, the date of their first general assembly):
a) Historičko-filologički razred b) Filosofičko-juridički razred c) Matematičko-prirodoslovni razred

(It seems that there were 12 original full members, not 16, and those were Rački, Jagić, Ljubić, Subotić, Bogović, Muhić, Veber, Schlosser, Bleiweis, Šulek, Torbar and Vukasović.) Timbouctou 10:11, 14 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Very good! Some sources say 16, but it appears that from the original 16 who were nominated, 12 or so were actually confirmed. Hopefully this is going to be clarified.
Maybe you've noticed in the sources: I also found a 1902 yearbook that listed deceased members too, so at least this era will be sorted out.

I believe it's just a matter of interpretation. The dates show that they had a total of 12 founding members who joined on 9 May 1866. Another four were added on 1 January 1867 (and it's probably these 16 that some sources see as "founding members", which would include Vukotinović) and another six joined on 25 July 1867, making it a total of 22 members who attended the academy's first assembly three days later on 28 July 1867. I'm still thinking about what would be the best way to organize the list. Splitting it into Former and Current members sounds like a good start. I've started making a provisional list of current members grouped by departments to see what it would look like (we don't have to adopt that format in the end). As for former ones, we could start it with a section about "founding members" followed by a list with any former member we can find, and then maybe later on group them according to departments, depending on available information about internal re-organisations that must have happened over the years. Anyway, I say we split it to make our life easier and deal with the details later when we populate both lists and when we get a better idea of the availability and reliability of sources. I agree. My argument against splitting by departments is applicable to former members, but not to current ones (departments are all sourced and reflect the current organization of the Academy).
