Eponyms[edit]

I have removed James Milton Smith as the eponym of PS 200 pending verification. He does not seem likely as the eponym of an NYC school, as he was a Confederate infantry colonel in the Civil War and later a member of the Georgia legislature after the war. I think it much more likely—although I have no proof—that the eponym for PS 200 is James McCune Smith, a pre-Civil War black pharmacist, physician, and abolitionist born in NYC. For Region 3, Jackson is obvious I think; Bowne lived in Flushing (now part of Queens) under Dutch rule; Rufus King served twice as a Senator for New York. AndrewHowse 03:59, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regions abolished[edit]

Since NYCDOE is moving away from regions, we need a new organising principle for this list. Probably districts? Might then add a field to capture the School support organization. --AndrewHowse 14:24, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Given the relatively artificial nature of the previously used regions, or of the current districts, and the fact that it will continue to change over time, I would favour an organising principle of borough (or if one prefers, county). Fields could then be used to reflect the district.

A far more valuable list would be a list of public schools that have been renamed, merged with other schools or simply eliminated. Delete?[edit]

I question whether this list shouldn't be deleted, given how incredibly incomplete, out-of-date, and inaccurate it is.

This list shouldn't exist because the information in it has been referenced from primary sources, like the DOE's website and individual schools' websites. Unless there's notability in a comprehensive list like this and it can be put together with secondary spruces, I say delete the page because there's no compelling reason for it to exist. P. S. 253 wrong neighborhood?[edit]

I grew up in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, and attended P. S. 253 on Ocean View Avenue at Brighton 6th and 7th Streets. I know of my own personal knowledge that the school is in Brighton Beach, not in Bensonhurst as the page currently states. Not being a seasoned Wikipedia jock, I am honestly unsure how to proceed. Can I just go ahead and make this correction, or would that constitute “original research” in violation of Wikipedia policy? Can someone better versed in these matters please advise me (or just go ahead and make the change, if that’s permissible)? Dodiad (talk)
