Middle Name?[edit]

Okay, a note or two & a question. According to Marshall's 2 vol. collected papers, his father's family name was originally 'Marschall'. From the same source, we learn that Louis Marshall's first language, spoken in the home, was German. In correspondence reprinted in those volumes, Marshall also states that he did not receive a degree from Columbia Law School; he did attend it, but for only one year; this did not detract from him going on to be one of the most well known and respected lawyers of his time. Now the question: what does the "B." stand for? There is no mention of a middle name in his 2 vol. collected papers. DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 00:40, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not only have I found no middle name for Louis Marshall, including on a passport application & census records, it seems also that his parents and his children also had no documented middle names. Is it possible that "B." -- widely referenced as Marshall's middle initial -- was his given Jewish name? DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 03:52, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm now all but certain that Marshall had no legal middle name or initial. There is no mention of a middle name or initial in any of the following documents: list of high school graduates, passport application, US Census records, obituary notice, memorial essay. It is conceivable to me that Marshall had a given Jewish name in addition to his official legal name. I have seen no record of any middle names for Marshall's parents, siblings, or children, either. They simply did not seem to do middle names. I suggest moving "Louis B. Marshall" to "Lewis Marshall (lawyer)" or something like that. DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 03:05, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Louis Marshall already exists as a redirect to this article; it was moved from that space to the current one three years ago here, with a statement that there are several other Louis Marshalls in existence. However, the only other one with a Wikipedia article is Louis Marshall (rugby league), which already uses a dab in the title. I don't see why this article can't be moved back to the proper title. Marshall Foundation[edit]

The Marshall Foundation in Tucson (not Phoenix), Arizona, appears to have nothing to do with Louis Marshall. See: http://www.marshallfoundation.com/. Suggest removing reference in this entry. DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 10:52, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photo[edit]

To be in the public domain, usually the image would have had to be published prior to 1923, or it has to be freely given by the copyright holder, or be available from a government source. I haven't come across on Google that meet that criteria, but perhaps one of the books about him include such a portrait? María (habla conmigo) 12:20, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Smith and "Forever Wild"[edit]

I have removed the following sentence from the article:

Apollos Smith and Louis Marshall were a force in tandem driving home the "Forever Wild" Amendment {"that no tree should be cut nor windfall be removed"} to the New York State Constitution,which went into effect on January 1, 1895.^[1]^[2]

It is only the second source that mentions Paul Smith in connection with the Forever Wild clause. No other account of the constitional ammendment mentions Paul Smith as a supporter, and given that he undertook a considerable amount of logging in his own business, it seems decidedly out of character. I would suggest that this material remain only on the discussion page unless a reliable corroborating source is found. Incidentally, the language quoted is from the NYS Conservationist article, not the NYS Constitution. -- Mwanner | Talk 18:41, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It would enhance this article, I think, to add a few, select and appropriate images to illustrate different aspects of Louis Marshall's life and career.
