Economic Times has published some new information about Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his career, which must be taken into account. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/et-cetera/mahendra-singh-dhoni-from-a-ticket-collector-to-team-india-world-cup-winning-caption/articleshow/7855500.cms

A section from the Article.

Kharagpur: Sourav Ganguly was Team India captain then and Yuvraj Singh a rising star. Those days, Mahendra Singh Dhoni worked as a railway ticket collector in West Bengal's Kharagpur. The shy, reticent Mahi is now Indian skipper. And, winner of the World Cup.

Dhoni came here as a 20-year-old in 2001, desperately seeking a job. The then divisional railway manager of South Eastern Railway Animesh Kumar Ganguly, a cricket fanatic, was desperately looking for a wicket-keeper batsman.

"Ganguly took Mahi to the South Eastern Railway Sports Association stadium, bowled him 60 balls and came back satisfied. Dhoni got the job in sports quota," said a nostalgic Siddhartha Chatterjee. He was the captain when Dhoni played for a local club.

But Dhoni's tryst with Kharagpur ended abruptly in 2003, when he began getting calls for bigger matches. He quit the railways job and joined the erstwhile Indian Airlines

Record

Even though it is just stats, there is a hint of POV. It would also be a hard section to update. I reckon the first part should stay where as the bottom two, the stuff about his average and strike rate should go, because of the constant need to update and the fact that it is not really a record. GizzaChat © 07:29, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The first part should stay (wrt best score by wkeeper and 2nd innings score), but the stuff about hitting lots of fours and sixes would seem to emphasize the more flamboyant/entertaining side of him, which sticks out like a sore thumb when his effectiveness rather than his style should be emphasized.ßlηguγɛη | Have your say!!! 07:33, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It strikes me that most of the stuff is very ephemeral and will be in constant need of checking. Not the best way to go about building a good article. --LiamE 01:55, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The records bit is a bit pointless I agree, but I think the comments about his entertaining style should remain because they hardly represent anything subjective, and paint a better picture about the player's character. After all, if a player is stated to be a bit of a superstar, it's within reason to explain why.

Successful good article nomination

I am glad to say that this article which was nominated for good article status has succeeded. This is how the article, as of June 17, 2007, compares against the six good article criteria:

1. Well written?: Article is well written with understandable, see points below for pointers towards improving article as it moves along in quality.
2. Factually accurate?: Article is sourced to an impressive (70) citations.
3. Broad in coverage?: Article is very thorough, covering key topics and moving along cohesively and chronologically.
4. Neutral point of view?: Article appears to be written in a neutral fashion, some tweaking would be helpful in the intro.
5. Article stability? Some vandalism from anon-ips in the edit history, just keep an eye on this, otherwise nothing too major.
6. Images?: Two public domain graphs.

If you feel that this review is in error, feel free to take it to a GA review. Thank you to all of the editors who worked hard to bring it to this status. — Smee 04:28, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some pointers as article moves along in quality --
  • Well written - Yes, but the intro is a bit long, perhaps part of it could be split off into a fourth paragraph, for clarity.
Done. Made it into four paras. I think, in a year's time - we will revisit the lead to ensure that it maintains an overview of his career.
  • Citations - Great referencing, meticulous. However, perhaps it would be helpful to include an "Additional sources" subsection, or "further reading", with some key books and articles.
Thanks for the lead. However Dhoni is a very recent cricketer and has no books. He, however, was the lead story sometime back on Cricinfo. I shall try and get that added and see if i can collect some additional material for "See Also" section.--Kalyan 11:28, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Images - The (2) public domain graphs should be moved to the WikiCommons, so they can be used more easily on cross-projects.
Will do this over the weekend. --Kalyan 11:28, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Review -- Once some of these things have been addressed, and the GA review absorbed, the article should go for a Wikipedia:Peer Review, to get even more feedback from others not familiar with the article.
The article already had one round of Peer Review. If required, i shall send it to another round of PR.

Great work, overall. Yours, Smee 04:28, 17 June 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi, i am the original author/creator of the graph and i have no issues if someone can update it (been a long time since i updated it). Also, as i don't have the time to work on the article as before, request someone else to take it forward. quickest centuries

"Dhoni's maiden century against Pakistan in Faisalabad (148) is the fastest century scored by an Indian wicket keeper. Only three centuries by two players (Kamran Akmal and Adam Gilchrist - 2) were faster than Dhoni's 93 ball century"

Presumably this refers to centuries scored by keepers. The use of the word "player" here implies any player scoring a century. I think the word "player" should be changed to "wicket keeper player" 81.152.251.113 (talk) 22:35, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Controversies?

Do either of the two controversies mentioned involve MSD being controversial? If not, I think they should be deleted. The one where he walked off has nothing to do with him really - Lara being the sole controversial figure. The one about his house being vandalised should be moved to a "personal life" section maybe. It certainly is not something where he did anything controversial.

The controversy section makes a distracting impresssion to anyone glancing at the article. --ti 15:35, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Positive feedback

A flamboyant batsman, knwon for his destrctive and attacking batting style, is turning into a defensive player. Earlier, Dhoni would try to hit six/four on a yorker (I am talking about his helicopter shot) but now all he is trying to do is to rotate the strike, keep taking singles/doubles. I know it is too much to ask to hit six/four on every ball. No one expects this from any batsman.

Dhonis batting style has changed completely. Just see the video tapes of his batting style till the last years T20 wold cup and compare it with his batting style nowadays and i am very sure that everyone will conclude that his batting style has changed completely. He has turned from a agrresive player to a defensive player. Dhoni was promoted to captain for his old batting style, ability to hit sixes and fours, keeping calm under pressure situation, winning matches under crucial situations, n ..... .

Earlier, he would try to score atleast 1 run per ball (I said atleast. I felt he wanted six a ball). At that time i thought that he wants to attain a 100 strike rate but now if he continues to play defensively he will soon fall behind like others such as sourav, rahul .

Being a dhoni fan i do not want this to happen. Dhoni said in his interview that he was finding it difficult to hit sixes and fours. Its more related to his batting style. The ability to hit sixes/ fours is still there inside him but since he has started playing defensively over the time his has lost the touch of, being an aggressive player.

I know many cricket lovers have a habbit of giving advice to the player but i feel it is the responsibility of the players to listen to the advice and distingush between what is correct and what is wrong. And the rest is the implementation and execution.

Finally, All the best Dhoni. I hope that i get to see the old Dhoni back in action. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.143.84.86 (talk) 06:29, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ICC ODI ranking

One of the paragraphs of the article mentions "Consistent performances in ODI cricket through the end of the 2005/06 season saw Dhoni briefly ranked as the No. 1 batsman in the ICC ODI ratings.[citation needed]". Why is any citation need for this? It is a fact that he was ranked # 1 briefly, and one of the references in the article (http://www.tribuneindia.com/2006/20060429/saturday/main1.htm) itself confirms it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mayankeagle (talkcontribs) 06:15, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can't expect someone to look thorough 87 references in an article to find out if something is mentioned somewhere in one of them. That's ridiculous. It also doesn't matter whether it's a 'fact'. Wikipedia works in Wikipedia:Verifiability not truth and if something is not referenced in an obvious manner then people can't verify the 'fact', no matter how much of a 'fact' it is... Anyway thank you for providing the reference, I've added it to the disputed sentence and removed the {{fact}} tag [1]. In future, if you are aware of a WP:Reliable source that supports something that is unreferenced, particularly if it has been tagged, then I would encourage you to add the reference to the unreferenced detail (and removing the tag if it's now been properly referenced) rather then complaining because someone wanted a reference for something that was unreferenced. ODI carrer

Dhoni, when he was on four during his innings of 23 against Sri Lanka at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Saturday (which date and year???), completed 4,000 runs in ODIs. Having already effected 165 dismissals (125 catches + 40 stumpings), Dhoni became the sixth wicketkeeper after Adam Gilchrist, Andy Flower, Alec Stewart, Mark Boucher and Kumar Sangakkara to complete the "double" of 4,000 runs and 100 dismissals in the history of ODIs. Dhoni’s feat of completing the "double" of 4,000 runs and 100 dismissals in only 114 innings is a world record. He is the youngest wicket-keeper batsman to do so (27 years and 208 days). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ishana mathen (talkcontribs) 09:32, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have not made this change, because I don't see why information about the company "R K Global" is relevant to encyclopaedic understanding of the actual topic; it actually sounds quite promotional. Mentioning Caste

Dear Editors!
There has been a discussion on India Portal related to mentioning of caste of subjects. The point is that mentioning caste of people, who have nothing to do with their caste, is found to be unnecessary by few editors. Hence the caste of the subject person needs to be deleted from the biography. I am not deleting the caste as of now but am only posting this here so that the regular editors of this article are well aware of it beforehand and no edit-wars take place. For details of discussion held on the portal please refer Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#Mentioning_caste_of_Individuals. Your views if any are welcome there or even here.
And.... as the reasons of exclusion of caste pointed out were "irrelavant to notability of subject person", "privacy of the subject person", "inclusion of caste is like branding individuals", etc. other information included in the article which also fall under these cases will also be removed after discussions. Examples of it included religion, non-notable spouse's and children's and parents' information, previous occupation, lived in places, non-notability related educational qualification, etc.
Your views on this are also welcome here or at the India portal. -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 16:55, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not here, please. There is a community discussion taking place at WT:INB and I would advise people to read the entire discussion before forming an opinion because the above summary is incorrect. Nothing more need be said here. - Sitush (talk) 02:21, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dhoni till class 12th did not play any professional cricket. The only cricket he played was school cricket. In 1998 he was selected by Mr. Deval Sahay, former Director(P),CCL to play for CCL(Central Coalfields Limited). In his initial days Deval Sahay helped him make a mark in a region where hardly anyone goes beyond zone level in cricket. In the very next year he played for Bihar U-19.[5] [6] [7] [8][9][10] Ak1984 (talk) 21:27, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done:. Thank you for this contribution. I've included the fact of his selection to CCL, using the India Today source. The fact that he played no pro cricket before that is clear from the structure of the article and from the details of the previous section. Bihar U-19 is already mentioned. I have left out your third sentence, as it's more about Sahay than about Dhoni. --Stfg (talk) 16:33, 4 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mahendra Singh DhoniMS Dhoni – MS Dhoni is his common name, the name used by most sources. Even Cricinfo, which usually calls people by their official names, calls him MS Dhoni. Joseph2302 (talk) 20:24, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It would be M.S. Dhoni wouldn't it? In ictu oculi (talk) 21:31, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The normal format for initials is M. S. Dhoni (with a space). LookLook36 (talk) 21:33, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Really? Because it's AB de Villiers on Wikipedia for example. And every source I've seen spells it MS Dhoni. Joseph2302 (talk) 21:45, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why South Africans like AB de Villiers and JP Duminy follow a different convention, but for Indian cricketers (V. V. S. Laxman, M. L. Jaisimha) the convention is stops and spaces. LookLook36 (talk) 10:22, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dhoni's contribution to the Indian army

Dhoni has expressed his interests number of times and whenever he got any opportunity, he never hesitate to show it. His dedication towards sports with his managerial capability, leadership virtues, desiplinaiary behaviors on or off of the ground made Indian army to give him a rank. When he joined the duty, he left his VIP stature and colored in the culture of Indian army. Indian army are known for their valour and discipline and Dhoni too has the same. Dhoni's service on the ground, gives army personnel a feeling of joy, excitation and more than this the Proud. Both at their fronts do duties with humble, disciplined and for the sake of country. Under International Records - Test records - Please change "Dhoni has the most stumpings(38) by any wicket-keeper in a Test career.[151]" to "Dhoni has the most stumpings(38) by an Indian wicket-keeper in a Test career.[151]". The existing citation listed is correct however the information has been incorrectly interpreted. His 38 is only the 3rd highest number of stumpings, the current record is 52. Including the classification of being an Indian player would rectify the situation (the two ahead of him are Australian and English). Tullynipp (talk) 11:52, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I removed this. The reference was for dismissals. After looking this up: [6], I see Dhoni has 38 stumpings but this is behind WAS Oldfield (AUS) & TG Evans (ENG) and tied for 3rd with SMH Kirmani (INDIA). So perhaps tied for first Indian with most stumping, but I think removing is better.PrisonerB (talk) 12:00, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Controversies

Dhoni was widely criticised for killing a baby goat as part of a religious ritual sacrifice in 2008. It stemmed from a Hindu religious belief that sacrificing an animal helps in achieving professional and monetary goals. Animal sacrifice is banned in most states in India as it is seen as barbaric and cruel. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bgshiva (talkcontribs)

Lead paragraph

@Spike 'em:, @Tubslubeamorepersempre:. I've tried to rework some of the claims in the lead paragraph to be a little more neutral. It did say: "As one of the highest run scorers in cricket history, he is also regarded as one of the best wicket-keepers in world cricket."

Now, for starters, the claim about being one for he highest run scorers is utterly untrue. He has less than 5000 Test runs, whilst there are at least 13 players with more than 10,000 (and doesn't even feature on this list). So to say he's one of the highest scorers per se is simply wrong. He does, however, have more than 10,000 ODI runs and is 11th on this list - and 17th on the T20I list. He is, however, on 36th on the list of List A run scorers, although is 18th on the T20 list - obviously he doesn't come anywhere close to the overall First-class list - his 7,000-odd runs pale into insignificance when the 61st player on the FC list has more than 30,000...

So, I contend that he's not anywhere close to being one of the highest run scorers in cricket history. In limited-overs internationals he's close to that - but only in those terms. It would be helpful if editors could remember that cricket has a long history and that chaps such as Hobbs and Woolley played in a lot of first-class matches over very long careers - in his combined 862 matches, Dhoni has about 26,000 runs; in his 831 matches Hobbs scored over 61,000.

I have, perhaps, replaced the point about him being considered a good finisher. I think the four refs I moved seem to show this. I'm concerned about how technical this is though - it seems too complex for the lead at all, and certainly for the first paragraph.

Now, wicket-keeping. I think one of the sources listed make the case for him being a decent keeper. So I've changed that to suggest that some people consider him to be one of the best keepers in modern limited overs international cricket. That may not be generous enough, but I'm not sure I'd necessarily put him up there with the likes of people such as Fred Huish, to pick a name from the distant past out of the air. And Huish never played internationally. I'm sure a case can be made for Dhoni as a wicket-keeper/batmsan for being one of the better/most attacking/all-round players in that position in the limited overs game. I'm not sure how much further we should go on that. And I'm, again, not sure what exactly belongs in the lead.

I'm sure that what I've written needs improving by the way. Blue Square Thing (talk) 14:09, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, it looks better than before; I'll try to read it a couple of times to see how it could be improved. One thing is that the article needs is more detail in the Playing Style section, as the lead should be a summary of this, not a replacement. I've added a couple of tags to there will revisit this later too. Spike 'em (talk) 14:27, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The key word in both articles is "honorary". The attempt to claim that he is somehow about to go into combat to save the heart of India is, frankly, both ridiculous and offensive. It is legitimate to include that he was given an honorary rank, but anything which attempts to go further than that is out of order. Blue Square Thing (talk) 17:33, 16 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed that he is not going to fight and he didn't have anything to do with any operation or posting. But at least we can mention things like " In 2011, He was awarded rank of honorary lieutenant colonel in Indian territorial Army."(Flight112b (talk) 15:34, 17 August 2019 (UTC))[reply]
@Blue Square Thing: Can you Please tell me the reason that why we can't mention about his honorary rank in Indian territorial Army? I completely agree with you that is in not in true army. Just a small edit "In 2011, He was awarded rank of honorary lieutenant colonel in Indian territorial Army." Flight112b (talk) 16:55, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
seems to me that BST does not object to that, as he said that It is legitimate to include that he was given an honorary rank..., but not to add much more than that. Spike 'em (talk) 17:40, 23 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely. Sorry for not replying earlier: I was watching a cricket match... Blue Square Thing (talk) 00:40, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I am bit confused, Where to add? Whether it should be in National honours, other honours or in outside cricket? Flight112b (talk) 01:25, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Probably outside cricket in my view. Blue Square Thing (talk) 07:54, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
To increase my confusion I read Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Abhinav Bindra articals. In Sachin and Abhinav case, such thing was in Award section. But for Kapil Dev it has a different section. But still I made a different section, if anyone feels wrong please change it. Flight112b (talk) 12:10, 24 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Media given nicknames, these are not nicknames.

As I mentioned above, Captain cool is given name by Indian media it's not like people call him by this name. Thala is reportedly given by Tamilnadu fans but it's not his pet name or given by his parents or close friends, so it devious to call as nicknames. MSD also not nickname it is initials of his name, if it is nickname than MS is also. There are no reliable sources backing these claims. I suggest to remove it or add tag for refs. Regarding New Template

I didn't find the the article on the said player to be miscellaneous. LALAJI1234 (talk) 07:05, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction

The introduction is too vast to be gone through with patience. So, I think a massive portion of it containing trivial, unnecessary, irrelevant, superfluous and hyperbole materials should be summarily removed. I have created this section to gather the opinions of other expert and experienced editors. --Soutut (talk) 08:44, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Introduction is too detailed and doesn't exactly captures your attention. There's an absolute lack of a specific tone. The article just doesn't stay true to one rhythm. It changes from being encyclopedia to news to fan mail to senseless. Varunk83 (talk) 06:50, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Myth Sakshi was Mahendra Singh's classmate.

Sakshi was never MS'S classmate, as per NDTV article, Sakshi was studied in a Welham Girl's school in Dehradun, Uttarakhand and from their she moved to Aurangabad, Maharashtra to do Hotel manegement. So how she can be Mahendra Singh's classmate? I suggest to remove this rumour from this article. To be honest, there's an awful lot of trivial crap we could remove from the article at the same time. I'd suggest aiming to cut by around 25% as a starting point, particularly from the non-cricket sections. Blue Square Thing (talk) 15:31, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I did some editing, removed trivia, but I don't want to remove any significant info by accidentally. Lost of claim have poor refs and whole article have refs from just websites no ref from books or journal. Lost of info looking unreliable, I don't know how these infos are generated, do these newspaper's web's do any research before writing?

I add tags behind lines, where I found dubious claims, wisely words. I suggest if you can trim unimportant info, disscus here and after consensus go ahead. Newton Euro (talk) 18:29, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ripomobo11: Two of the references you added state that he won the 'ODI cricketer of the year' award, which is already stated below in the article. As for the addition of 'well-regarded', it can apply to many people/cricketers. If you see the Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, or other similar articles, the statement that they are the best (or one of the best) is supported by many reliable sources. 'Well-regarded' can be used in many places. Kpddg (talk contribs) 11:24, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

See this sentence and its corresponding citations (ref 3) in the Virat Kohli article. Only if a large number of such sources can be found, it can be added that he is the 'best', etc. Kpddg (talk contribs) 01:54, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
