Mack Sennett's Companies[edit]

I've often read of Sennett's Keystone studios, but keep seeing additional references to "Mack Sennett Studios" in Studio City, CA. (e.g. the Studio City's Chamber of Commerce Web page). Does anyone have any definitive information on this? Where would this fit within his timeline? Thanks so much! --Shannontakita 15:38, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No info to provide yet, Shannon, but look at the image of "Keystone Studios" in the article --

On the roof is clearly painted "Mack Sennett Studios." --Rizzleboffin 16:28, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Here's what Sennett says, in his (not entirely reliable) autobiography King of Comedy, p.204
"Early in 1915 I went to La Junta, Colorado, to meet D.W. Griffith and Thomas H. Ince in the parlor of the Harvey House. We emerged with the Triangle Film Corporation, which we announced with the loudest brass and drums we could hire press agents to beat... Now I made a change in Edendale which I looked forward to as the highest point of my life. I took down the huge sign which announced the Keystone studios and replaced it with a much bigger sign. It said:
MACK SENNETT STUDIO"
Apparently he moved to the San Fernando Valley in what would later be named "Studio City"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_City,_Los_Angeles

"Studio City was created by the movie industry and earned its name in the 1920s when Mack Sennett moved his studios from a neighborhood known as Edendale (near modern Echo Park) to a property near Colfax Avenue and Ventura Boulevard."76.95.209.135 (talk) 04:23, 10 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
and on p. 257:
"The sign at the front gate in Edendale informed Edendale that this was the Mack Sennett Studio. I set store by my name up there, valued it more, even, than the money now pouring into the cashbox by way of the parent company, Triangle. But our pictures were actually released as Keystone Comedies and that is how the world knew them. Suddenly we were offered a shining opportunity..." then goes into the forming of Triangle with Griffith & Ince. --Rizzleboffin 16:57, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Keystone Studios.jpg[edit]

Image:Keystone Studios.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Sennett and Chaplin[edit]

I know that both Sennett's and Chaplin's memoirs are unreliable. But I believe it is generally accepted that Chaplin's first great films were produced by Sennett, but Chaplin believed he ought to be paid more than Sennett, and walked out, and moved on to Essanay. If confirmed, I feel that this aspect of the Sennett story should be featured. Valetude (talk) 00:09, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Distancing themselves...[edit]

Although Gloria Swanson worked for Sennett in 1916 and was photographed in a bathing suit, she... "vehemently denied" being one of the bathing beauties.

It sounds as though there was something not quite respectable about the bathing beauties. Could we know more? Valetude (talk) 00:22, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Make one guess - think of the very first thing that comes to mind. It is likely correct ;) CapnZapp (talk) 12:10, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Guessing is all very well, but not strictly encyclopedic. Can we not have a discreet suggestion (suitably referenced) as to how these girls were classified against other young actresses? Valetude (talk) 22:45, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
What more do you need? Swanson's reaction is quite telling, I would say. That said, feel free to add something yourself (suitably referenced)! CapnZapp (talk) 09:14, 27 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Melbourne, Quebec ... or ... Richmond, Quebec ?[edit]

The introduction says Melbourne. The info box says Richmond. Is there a dispute? Are we trying to split the difference? OK by me, as it's far afield from my knowledge, but someone here might know the answer. Dratman (talk) 01:28, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing this out. Britannica says Richmond. There is the NYT obit but I don't have a subscription so I can't access it. I don't think there are many active editors with this page on their watchlist I am going to post a link to this thread at the WP:RDE. MarnetteD|Talk 02:07, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the question title to indicate what it's talking about. (Sorry, I thought I was still in WP:RD.)
The article links to Melbourne, Quebec, but at the top of that, there's a hatnote saying that there was another Melbourne; and that links to Richmond, Quebec, which says that the other Melbourne was just across the river from Richmond and merged into it in 1999. (The present Melbourne is just a few miles away.) So the logical explanation would be that it was that Melbourne. If so, I would suggest wording like Melbourne, now part of Richmond, Quebec. --184.144.99.72 (talk) 03:04, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have been advised to post the question at a different desk so this thread Wikipedia:WikiProject_Resource_Exchange/Resource_Request/Archive_113#Help_at_the_Mack_Sennett_article. 184s info will need to be considered i cleaning this up as well. MarnetteD|Talk 04:12, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Responses here Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Entertainment#Help_at_the_Mack_Sennett_article and here Wikipedia:WikiProject_Resource_Exchange/Resource_Request#Help_at_the_Mack_Sennett_article all mention Danville Quebec. My day is busy so I may not have time to edit the article so if anyone wants to use any of these references to update the page please feel free to do so. The Wikipedia Library Bundle (page 1, page 2) Canadian Broadcasting Corporation)[1], The Canadian Encyclopedia[2] (or at least "Mikall Sinnott"), Le Journal de Montréal [3] and the British Film Institute[4] La Presse [5]. I have updated the info in the article with refs and added a footnote about the discrepancy in the towns named. Anyone who finds the wordinbg on the clunky side should feel free to copy edit them. MarnetteD|Talk 15:31, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
