Disruption[edit]

Marc Wilson has made it clear what his footballing nationality is. Unless it is referring to football or another sport, there is no such nationality as Northern Irish, and since Marc Wilson plays for Ireland he is not Northern Irish. Even the Good Friday Agreement does not recognise Northern Irish as a self-identity, only using Irish or British. O Fenian (talk) 15:04, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He is from Northern Ireland. That would make him Northern Irish. No one claimed that Northern Irish was a nationality but it is an adjective to describe his geographical origin.Factocop (talk) 15:19, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you read my post above. "Northern Irish" is rejected in preference to other terms by the majority of the population of Northern Ireland, and Marc Wilson's footballing nationality is Irish not Northern Irish. O Fenian (talk) 15:21, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide evidence that this is the case? Because I myself would use the term 'Northern Irish' as it suggests that I am Irish and from Northern Ireland. Am I the only one? To say that he is Irish would suggest that he is from ROI so it is better to say simply that he is 'a football player who represents ROI'.Factocop (talk) 13:26, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He plays for ROI so is Irish and I have piped it to the ROI national team. Mo ainm~Talk 19:25, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed it back to its original. Yes he is Irish but to say he is Irish is to suggest that he is from ROI. It already says in the opening paragraph that he plays for ROI. isnt that enough?Factocop (talk) 08:55, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No it doesnt suggest anything of the sort people from NI are also Irish. Mo ainm~Talk 10:02, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately that isn't the case. If you are from Northern Ireland you are either British or Irish. If you have an Irish passport then you are a citizen of ROI. If you have a british passport then you are a citixen of Great Britian and Northern Ireland. So to say he is irish would suggest that he is from ROI when in actual fact he is from Northern Ireland but represents ROI in international football. It is best to leave it as it is for neutrality.Factocop (talk) 10:24, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And given that he has represented Northern Ireland at junior level would suggest that he has had or still has a British passport as well as an Irish passport.Factocop (talk) 10:31, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There has been similar discussion in recent days at Talk:Darron Gibson, if it continues to be argued bit by bit at every NI born player, we should have centralised discussion at WT:FOOTY. Meanwhile, so long as there is clear presentation of the facts of his place of birth and representational history, there is no need for adjectival phrases that cause misunderstanding to the uninformed (who think that "Irish" can only apply to the Republic) or offense to the political sensitive (who consider that anything from Northern Ireland can only be UK-ish). If the lead is well written, the word "Irish" is redundant, and so nobody need object to the content. Kevin McE (talk) 10:45, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have fully-protected the page for one week. I suggest coming to a consensus somewhere neutral, like WT:FOOTY, as suggested above. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 12:56, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
