Les Prince Field

Removing "The team plays its home games on Les Prince Field, located on campus" since they have since dug up the field to make way for the new sports complex.

Added the reference to the Iron Ring Clock to the Students section, as I am a fan of the clock. Burtonpe 01:34, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Arts and Science

McMaster has six faculties ONLY. Arts and Science is not a faculty!

- True, Arts and Sciece is a program what offers a double major. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.113.28.66 (talkcontribs)

Merge from Whidden Hall

I propose that we merge Whidden Hall into this article on the grounds that there are multiple Whidden Halls at other Universities, and if the information overwhelms this article, it may be more appropriate to split the entire campus section off to a sub-article, rather than split off individual residence halls. Peyna 19:53, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

I like the idea of a separate page for the campus, so residences like Whidden Hall can be incorporated there. The McMaster article itself is already quite long imo and as pointed out may overwhelm the article. YCCHAN 20:02, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
See Campus of Michigan State University and Michigan State University for a good example of how this can be done. Peyna 20:04, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
IMO an individual residence hall would need to have some fairly extraordinary significance to merit an article of its own. No reason not to merge. Friday (talk) 22:08, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
WHY? If the place exists and there is something to say about it, AND multiple people to say it, it deserves a freaking page! It's not like it takes up room in a book or space on a shelf. It is real information which belongs in a comprehensive encyclopedia. There is no finished product for wikipedia, things will be added over time. Isn't the goal to gather information? Well it's gathered, there is no reason to cut it loose. Steelium
Well, we need more than mere existance to have a good article. My socks exist, want an article on them next? Here at Wikipedia, we want verifiability and an appropriate level of detail. The sources for some of the content have been shown to be suspect. Also, it looks like some of us think that this dorm getting the same coverage as the many other dorms at this university is an appropriate level of detail. If you want to paste the entire thing into the residential life section on this article, be my guest, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of those who watch this article didn't like it. Anyway, even if you can find multiple students there to "confirm" things for us, that's still not very verifiable. Friday (talk) 17:08, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Do not remove the merge tag unless you have actually done the merge, or some other conclusion was reached here. Peyna 22:14, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

BTW, I have no objections at all to the creation of Campus of McMaster Univserity or whatever it would be called. The main article is a bit long. Whatever information is used should be relevant and verifiable, of course. Friday (talk) 17:40, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Movie: Animal House

From time to time I notice it mentioned in the write-up for McMaster that X residence was the inspiration for the movie Animal House (an element of folklore at McMaster). Such comments should not be permitted without citation considering it is well note that Christopher Miller was the writer and creator of the movie concept (Belushi - A Biography, by Judith Pisano & Tanner Colby). I am unaware of any evidence that would support a McMaster residence inspiration thesis. --Labattblueboy 16:21, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Strangely enough, it might still be notable - certainly it's at least an urban legend, and quite "well-known", even though it's not true. A cite showing that it's "known" - regardless of its truth - could suffice. --Hamiltonian 16:32, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Images

Please note that the images taken from the McMaster University web site are not really allowed under Wikipedia's image use policy. They may be free to use for noncommercial purposes, but that's not good enough (see {{db-noncom}}). These should be easily replaceable, however, by someone who can get to the campus with a camera to take photos. These photos must then be licensed under the GFDL, a Creative Commons License, or released to the public domain. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 03:48, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

GA Review

In reviewing the article according to the Good Article Criteria, I have declined the nomination for Good Article status based on the follow concerns listed below. I do believe that McMaster's has the potential to be a Good Article and even a featured article. I wholeheartedly encourage the editors to continue improving the article and resubmit it for GA. For reference, I compared this article to the FA quality of Cornell University and Michigan State University as well as the GA quality of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
1. It is well written. - Pass

  • The article conforms to the guidelines of WP:MOS with no glaring violation. Some minor details would be the need to merge the Chancellors and Presidents area under the umbrella of notable alumni and faculty. (Chancellors are clearly "notable faculty") For the individuals that were president as well as Chancellors this can be noted with an asterik in a single listing.

2. It is factually accurate and verifiable. - Needs Improvement

  • There are several items throughout the article that need some sort of reference attached to them, in addition to entire sections without any reference. I've tagged the items that are of most concern but overall there should be a thorough vetting of sourcing.
  • I am also concerned that out of the 17 "sources" cited in the footnote area that 13 of them are directly related to McMaster's own site and as I note in my edit summary the AACSB cite doesn't directly support the claim it is attached to. There needs to be more disversification of sources. While I don't doubt the overall reliability of McMaster's own site (as per WP:RS), for claims that are particularly related to its prominence, reputation or "pioneering aspects" it is best to have an objective third party reference that support those claims.

3. It is broad in its coverage. - Needs Improvement

  • There needs to be an overall expansion of the Satellite Campuses area. Some key details would be relevant to the history of McMaster that lead to that particular expansion. I would also say with the significant entertainment alumni from McMasters that the Theatre section seems a bit thin.
  • While not a make or break inclusion for GA, I would work on the few red links in the Chancellor area. Either create a stub with sufficient notability mentioned or remove the wiki-link
  • As a side note (and this relates a little to NPOV), are there any significant controversies or scandals in McMaster's history?

4. It follows the neutral point of view policy - Needs Improvement

  • The article makes several claims to the University's prominence and esteemed reputation with the majority of those claims also being unreferenced. In this capacity the article tips the scale from being an impassioned, neutral article to one that is borderline advertising. I'm aware that a lot of these articles are written with the assistance of alumni and you have ample reasons to be proud of your school, but for the benefit of an encyclopedic entry about the school there needs be more neutrality in the presentation.

5. It is stable - Pass

  • The article has progressed more or less gracefully since it's creation. It was nominated previously for GA and the editors responded to the review and the article has been sufficiently stable since it's renomination.

6. It contains images, where possible, to illustrate the topic. - Pass

  • The article has several images which help to visualize the article's content. I particularly like the construction and finished product of the nuclear reactor.
  • I don't know what is the value of the image "Archway of University Hall". In reading the article, I don't see a reference in the article to any significance in the architecture.

As I mention above, I do believe the McMaster University article has excellent potential to be a GA in the near future. The biggest issue is the references (and the particular need to diversify with third party refs). I am available if there is any questions. Agne 02:10, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

The Archway of University Hall pic refers to the Gothic Architecture style, close up.
Now that would have encyclopedic merit. I would recommend including the reference to the architecture style in the photo caption and also in the article. Agne 11:13, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

MDCL vs. Degroote School of Business

The Michael Degroote Centre for Learning and Discovery is not a part of their business school. Its main purpose is to provide lecture/tutorial space for all faculties and research space for the Faculty of Health Science. The business school is housed in another building altogether named the Degroote School of Business.

Re: Rat turned into a coffee house

Where the Rat was located is now bridges cafe... and although they have cafe written in the name they don't serve nearly the variations of coffee as some places, i.e. second cup or starbucks, do on campus.... bridges is a vegetarian cafe see hospitaltys services website on bridges: http://hospitality.mcmaster.ca/Locations_DO_Diversity_Cafe.htm Sellerj 18:12, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

McMaster template

i tried to figure out how to change the mcmaster template (if that's what you call it) at the bottom of the page but to no avail. i want it to include among the special programs mcmaster's indigenous studies program. a link to the program page: http://www.mcmaster.ca/indigenous/default.htm --74.97.142.249 04:35, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

You should create an article about the program first, then add it to the template. However, you would also need to create a user account (which is generally a good idea anyway) before you can create articles. However, you may also consider whether the subject can be adequately covered in the main University article - I see you already added a nice blurb. Generally, the process is to break out content into new articles if the main article grows too long and there is sufficient information on the secondary subject to warrant a separate article. There are also the notability guidelines to consider. I will add some other useful links to your talk page.--Kubigula (talk) 21:36, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Engineering Contraversy

Any sources for any of this stuff?? I was an Eng student at Mac, and to be honest some of what's claimed there doesn't surprise me (in my day however it was us who was vandalising the arts buildings), but claims of rape then celebratory keggers I think deserve a reference. Anyone?? Also, the Eng paper is/was called the plumbline, not pipeline...that I'm going to change, as I have a few dozen old issues to refer to... Burtonpe 11:46, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Reforestation

Illegal logging was conducted by Haitian illegals to put up a parking lot on Old Growth Forest containing a sacred Indian burial ground of the First Nations. The ancient cemetery was vandalized by Obamamerkelbushies (Harper). Many of the species in the wood have gone extinct. The forest was served by a canal which connected to the Thames. Historic railways and tramways in the forest were also vandalized, destroyed and the heritage railway stations demolished. All of the neighbouring region was also vandalized to the extreme. Haitians raped the beavers and drove out the bobcat. The remaining forest floor was attacked with Agent Orange and crack. Villagers were forced from their homes to put up a chemical car wash. Politicians guilty of failing to protect the woodland have been sentenced to death. First Nations have agreed that reforestation is the best solution. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.114.79.65 (talk) 03:15, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

What's the relevance of this section and these comments to McMaster? It reads like a series of inflammatory statements, which are completely off-topic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:1970:51A4:3601:556F:8070:C0F1:4CD1 (talk) 22:51, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

Small gingerbread house

I'm not sure if this kind of detail belongs in the article, here are some proposed citations if so.
