Awesome song! I learned it after joining Gary McNamara's band in the US :) 68.160.160.162 (talk) 13:44, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved the following here from the "Trivia" section of the article, as it may be of use but is completely unattributed and is not written in an encyclopaedic style:

Note: from direct descendant of Abbey Fishermen and great nephew of said McNamaras ..this song was written by McNamara's from Limerick and has no English connection.....afterwards 2 brothers joined Royal Munster Fusileers ..John died at Aubers on 9th may 1915 and Michael retired a Regimental Sergeant Major in Devon 1962. Thomas died in 1978 the last of the 4 brothers aged 112 and was the man who helped Eamon De Valera escape to U.S.A in 1920....

Perhaps the Belfast theater manager who was the lyricist credited in the copyright was inspired by the brothers McNamara and the St. Mary's band from Limerick, but the association seems speculative and perhaps no more than a family legend. Blarneystar (talk) 18:32, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
