@Adrian2526: Miss Universe 2015 is locked until enough verifiable information is available from reliable sources. Trying to recreate it here is just disruptive. • Gene93k (talk) 20:09, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
• Gene93k how is that disruptive — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adrian2526 (talkcontribs) 20:13, 23 July 2015‎ (UTC)[reply]
  • Wikipedia is a collaborative project that operates through consensus. The consensus formed by discussions on 4 August 2014 and 2 December 2014 was that the 2015 event should not get an article yet. Recreating the 2015 event under alternative titles has been tried before. They were deleted and the 2015 title has been protected. You are attempting an obvious end run around repeatedly established consensus. Please stop. • Gene93k (talk) 21:13, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MISS ST. LUCIA[edit]

I delete Miss St. Lucia from the list, because there is not a serious source about her participation; doesn't exist a foto, or image from her with a sash or crown. Doesn' exist a news article, or something for prove she will be on Miss Universe.--Alex Duilius (talk) 02:52, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

SEAT, AND HOST.[edit]

I deleted all info about the seat and the host, because none Miss Universe Organisation, none FOX network, and none WME/IMG haven't confirmed NOTHING. Meanwhile, we can't add nothing about it. The gov. of the Philippines can say everything they want, but, if MUO don't confirmed, is not official.--Alex Duilius (talk) 02:54, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Perth's businessman is looking for the seat; then, can somebody say that's Manila an official seat? http://www.perthnow.com.au/entertainment/confidential/miss-universe-world-final-could-be-held-in-perth/news-story/36629eb55d2caf3e50aed1b7f9dee70c --Alex Duilius (talk) 05:13, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

:::Could we revert the other info and state information regarding the Philippine bid as well as include the Australian bid. And change the wording to suggest that the Miss Universe Organization did not confirm anything. The hosting of the Philippines is not yet certain but its fact that if the Philippines is proposing the Mall of Asia Arena as the main venue and the Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach made talks with Duterte for the possibility of hosting the pageant in the country. Deleting the info is a waste since all the other pageant articles lacks context beyond the final results and the contestants.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 09:05, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Perth is biding to host Miss Universe 2017 not Miss Universe 2016 as per the Herald Sun (transcript found at here)
Quote

The newly appointed director of Miss Universe Australia Troy Barbagallo has confirmed to the Herald Sun that an official bid to host the international final in 2017 and 2018

Previous host cities of Miss Universe include Las Vegas, Moscow, Bangkok, Mexico City and Miami with the Philippines tipped to host the 2016 international final.

So I'm reverting all the info. The Philippines is hosting the 2016 edition unless a contradictory source that says otherwise.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 09:27, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

From ANI[edit]

Hello.

First of all, i'm not native english speaker. For that, maybe some words and things I can't be understand well. I don't know if i'm on the correct Page. I apologize.

I ask the intervention of an Administrator for the article Miss Universe 2016. The minister of tourism of the Philippines anounce in July that the Miss Universe Pageant for 2016 will be on January 2017, on the Philippines. Today, September 10th, there is not a confirmation from the Miss Universe Organization, or the network whom has the tv rights, or the owners of Miss Universe. The alleged venue has not on their website information about Miss Universe, and, some news reports anounce the host. But, Miss Universe Organization has not confirmed nothing! Then, is not official yet. I believe it's important to wait a confirmation, before to make it official in Wikipedia. The others editors think different and I believe are wrong. Can you has an intervention on the article? Maybe I'll be wrong, but I think it's necessary a neutral point of view.

Thanks--Alex Duilius (talk) 22:58, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it should not be considered official until it is announced by MUO. Article can be edited to reflect that the Philippines minister believes the country is hosting but that it has not been officially confirmed. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 01:57, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree until the MUO confirms the date and venue it should be left blank. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 18:58, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Switzerland & St. Lucia[edit]

Wikipedia needs more realistic editors.

Please, don't add Switzerland & St. Lucia to the list of returning nations.

Why?

1. Switzerland, the source was, or a Facebook page, or a website built by a kindergarten's child. No date, no contestants, no nothing. No confirmation of the nation's return to Miss Universe.

2. St Lucia, the source is a Facebook page open (according with FB) in Cape Town, South Africa. No contestants, no date, no nothing. No confirmation of the nation's return to Miss Universe.

Then, we take this "sources" as goods?

--Alex Duilius (talk) 16:36, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

too long/too many tables/too many flags[edit]

This is some minor event. The article is too long, we don't need every single detail, and we certainly don't need a flag every time a country is mentioned. Less content please, this isn't really something important enough to warrant a detailed article. Spacecowboy420 (talk) 06:29, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

One of the so-called "Big Four" pageants is far from being a minor event. In fact pageant articles lack details regarding the event itself (such as the organization/bidding/preparations) and just listing the contestants and winners without context has potential WP:NOTSTATSBOOK issue. I agree though that the contestant portion of the article (contestants and the so called "notes" section) is unnecessarily long when more decreet footnotes could be used besides the contestant's name on the table to denote debuting and returning countries.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 09:30, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see you once again reverted my edits. Please elaborate what you mean that the organization portion "totally lacks notability". It has notable coverage from notable sites such as CNN Philippines and Philippine Daily Inquirer and not some blog sites. It seems your edit is a case of WP:IDONTLIKEIT but I will solicit response for clarification of your rationale.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 23:45, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's unimportant. It's not worthy of a lengthy encyclopedia article. The content of English language wikipedia, should be relevant to native speakers of English. If it's only a big issue for Filipinos, then perhaps it would be better served on Tagalog wikipedia. Spacecowboy420 (talk) 08:58, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Are you FREAKING kidding me? You're seriously trying to argue that one of the most notable international pageants with widespread coverage isn't notable? this place is getting more ludicrous every week. YES there is a lot of cruft that needs to go and a lot of work on the referencing but that is no good reason the artivle shouldn't exist. Shaking my head. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 09:57, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
PageantUpdater - Calm down, bro.
Could you point out where I said that the article should not exist? Spacecowboy420 (talk) 10:23, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
"It's unimportant. It's not worthy of a lengthy encyclopedia article." is a clear case of WP:IDONTLIKEIT, an opinion. The article is clearly important in its field (pageantry) and may or may not be important to the layman (especially for someone in a country that has no established pageant culture). The length of a well-cited article is usually determined by the number of sources. If its unimportant or not that important, media coverage (even more so by non-pageant-centric news sources such as national papers) is usually an indicator of "importance". Limiting the length of an article just because a user arbitrarily says so should not be done.
For example, I can say that INF Netball World Cup is unimportant according to your logic and should be limited because it is less prominent than the FIFA World Cup or perhaps both should be limited since a user finds academic pursuits more important than sports or pageantry. The Netball World Cup article is short due to the sport having less coverage or interest from other users due to systemic bias. It is short because few user takes interest but it is definitely important when it comes to the sport of netball. But no one should prevent from expanding the Netball World Cup article provided that they have valid published sources. In short the article is very important to its field (pageantry) despite the article's current state.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 10:41, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The 7-11 outside my condo is very important to me and my neighbors. May I make an article regarding it? I'm sure there is at least one crappy mention of it in the local media that I can source. Spacecowboy420 (talk) 10:43, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The article doesn't really have any decent content. It has HUGE tables. It has too many tables. It has 100s of flags. It's a huge article that basically says nothing. It's poorly written and doesn't really provide anything to the reader. (well unless they came to the articles looking for flags and tables) Spacecowboy420 (talk) 10:48, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Your argument is weak, I'm talking about coverage by national or regional media and not about crappy mentions on your 7-11 like a robbery that coincidentally happened in that place. The national Philippine media decided that it's worthy to cover the pageant and ask the Tourism secretary herself. The shootings in the United States is personally unimportant to me, but it has received national coverage in the United States at least hence they have articles.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 10:58, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Also you deleted content that would really add context the event. It said something before, that the pageant is likely to be hosted in the Philippines. The hosts are already preparing despite the absence of an official announcement by the Miss Universe Organization, but the tourism ministry has been in touch with the pageant organizers. The Miss Universe 2015 winner had talks with Duterte regarding the hosting. Deleting the organization section is a step back. Have you really read my suggestion regarding the use of footnotes to address the so-called "Notes".
Is any of the above relevant to English language Wikipedia? Sure Imelda Marcos stealing billions, or Duterte swearing at the Pope is of international interest - but this? I'd suggest that it should be of interest to readers from native English speaking nations, to be relevant to English language Wikipedia. Why not put it on Tagalog Wikipedia instead, it might get a much better reception there, if the majority of the interest is limited to the Philippines. Spacecowboy420 (talk) 11:15, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Removing content about negotiations to host the event is stupid. Have you considered this is an event involving 80+ countries not just the Philippines? A cursory search showed Melbourne, Australia also considering a bid to host. It's totally disingenuous to suggest interest is limited to the Philippines. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 11:52, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As long as its sourced reliably I don't see any problems. Tagalog Wikipedia's (and all the other Wikipedias) scope is the same for English Wikipedia, the difference is the language. The existing systemic bias made English Wikipedia lean to articles of interest by English-native speakers. A theoretical nationwide drought in let's say Madagascar would be notable but it's length would be limited if the only available detailed sources are in Malagasy. A Portuguese speaking user may want to contribute a Brazil-related article in the Tagalog Wikipedia but language barriers may prevent them, but if they happen to know enough Tagalog then they can contribute but have minimal expectations that other users will help them. By your logic the Copa América's size should be limited since its more of an interest to Spanish speakers. Also English is also spoken in the Philippines and is one of the two official languages.
Limiting content just because you don't find it important, and by your words "only Filipinos" make it a big deal is shooting the Wikipedia project on its own foot. Also the fact that the pageant is participated by numerous countries and is considered one of the "Big Four" by the pageant community cements its case of being notable.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 11:32, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Split to create Miss Universe 2016 contestants[edit]

I'm proposing to split the article and create a separate article for Miss Universe 2016 contestants, similar to what is being done for team sports (squads listed in a separate article) to improve the readability and reduce the clutter of the article. I know this hasn't been done yet in any of the pageant pages hence I'm reaching for a consensus regarding this move. I propose just leaving a collapsible table of participating countries similar to what's being done to articles of each editions of the Olympics and place all other information such as the contestants' names, heights, hometowns, as well as the replacements, designations, crossovers, etc. We could list names of those who made it to the top 10 in the main article as well as other special awards. This is also to give more weight to the event itself now that the hosts are now confirmed.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 09:43, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would recommend bringing this up at the Wikiproject. I might be wrong but I would expect that most people think the subject is barely notable enough for its own article and a separate one for contestants would be excessive cruft. --- PageantUpdater (talk) 12:07, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I brought the matter in Wikiproject Pageant, and asked interested parties to make their feedback here. I understand this proposal may led to the creation of contestants articles for other editions as well (which contains nothing but the contestant tables and results page) but as a compromise, if the parent article contains nothing but table, the new pages should be redirected to the parent article instead. I honestly think that splitting the article would benefit it by giving more weight to the event itself. Like in football, many people are just interested with the results but some are particular with the squad listings. Also I believe its not cruft given the magnitude of the event. Miss Universe is not some obscure pageant.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 04:44, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I oppose the split for good, its make too unnecessary with the previous year's pageant articles. ApprenticeFan work 01:45, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This year's participant nations[edit]

Everyday, I look on the official website's 2016 participant countries buy on our article, however is barely similar. So I am planning to make a consensus that the article's list of participating nations(returns, debuts, and withdrawals) should be based on the official website. Only Ghana is withdrawing in this edition so please do not add Gabon and Nigeria even though their pageants are cancelled, since they still might appoint someone.

Date change[edit]

When did the organization change the time that the event will happen in the location where it occurs? Currently it's scheduled for 5:00 am on the 30th. —C.Fred (talk) 19:08, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The I.Ps seem to hold US-centric systemic bias, while the pageant originated from the US, we always follow local time of any event articles, from the Olympics (not Central European Standard Time which is used by Switzerland where the IOC is based) whether its held in Japan or Brazil. I strongly suggest requesting page protection since the IPs are engaging in some kind of edit war (not only the dates).Hariboneagle927 (talk) 01:58, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Hariboneagle927, according to the official source from the Miss Universe website, the official pageant date will be January 29 for those in the US, Canada and Latin America. We know the date for January 30, 2017 on the local date which is via satellite [1]. ApprenticeFan work 06:54, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm aware of that, but some IPs can't get a grip that this is the English Wikipedia and not Wikipedia America. Also it doesn't help that the website itself displays the January 29, 2016 date. C. Fred tried to add a note regarding this, but this was reverted.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 09:51, 12 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Useless information[edit]

There are some sections in the page that are not necessarily important to the pageant per se. We should keep the previously used standard which just includes main information of the pageant, results, awards, contestants and other links to Miss Universe page or another relatable pages. I suggest to remove the sections of Organization and Pageant, which are not necessarily an important part of the article. -Cesaro2012 (talk) 16:34, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree, the organization part of a large-scale international event is just as important as the main event itself. IMHO it would be a downgrade to remove such info since it gives context on how the pageant came to be. As long as information is reliably sourced I don't see any reason to remove everything save for the results, award, contestants. We have information regarding the preparations of other international events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics such as the bid (which a casual spectator would likely care less). The articles of the past editions must be improved instead of downgrading the article of the latest edition which in my opinion is more reliably sourced save for the contestant returns, withdrawals, etc. than the previous ones.
However I can see why some people will feel overwhelmed with the organization section, since nothing much is said about the finals night of the pageant itself except the venue and date. We could remedy it instead of deleting it outright while still following the previous standards in some way. But I acknowledge that I may likely have bias since I introduced this format.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 17:06, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe we can just put the Organization and another information that is not properly part of the final night in another page, it would help to make the page less oveloaded of information that is not part of the exact competition. -Cesaro2012 (talk) 19:58, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Maybe transfer most of the contents to a separate article called Organization of Miss Universe 2016, and leave behind a summarized version. Like how some of the big sporting events have even a page for each country making a bid to host the event.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 23:02, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly, we can take it to another page to make it more organized. I'm going to begin with this process only with your permission. Thanks. -Cesaro2012 (talk) 00:57, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Brazilian contestant "hometown"[edit]

Does the article enlist the cities where the misses were born or the cities they represent? For instance, American titleholder Deshauna Barber was born in Columbus, Georgia, but her hometown is put as Washington, D.C, where she grew up and won the title. If that's the case, I believe Brazilian contestant Raissa Santana's hometown should be Umuarama, Paraná, the city where she's lived since a little girl and became the town beauty queen, and not Itaberaba, where she was only born in. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.77.77.228 (talk) 00:46, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The contestants' hometowns are not up for discussion. They should be what is listed under the Miss Universe website, and if they are not, they should be changed as so. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 00:49, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Don't confuse hometown with birth place. We go by what's listed on the website.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 11:35, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I never confuseed birthplace with hometown. You play your game as you want to. By the way, on the official website Miss France hometown is Paris and not Lille... just a little help, but don't even bother — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.77.77.228 (talk) 19:07, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, Don't meant to be rude, but It was directed to any user who may read this part of the talk page. Not just you. But other IPs apparently do confuse the two terms hence good faith edits to "correct" the hometowns listed, but they don't realize they are not helping at all.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 22:55, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Tags[edit]

Article tags were added in this edit on 14 January. I don't see what content here is overly promotional and there are inline tags to deal with verification on an otherwise fairly referenced article. @Hollyckuhno: Please explain why you think otherwise so that others can specifically deal with the issue. Fuebaey (talk) 20:42, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I was just about to remove them when I figured there was probably a talk page discussion on this topic. I agree that there are plenty of sources and the article doesn't look like an advertisement at all. ~Mable (chat) 23:06, 31 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There are still many contents in this article that are not properly cited such as the contestant's age, height, and hometown, the sub-articles Designations, Replacements, Withdrawals, etc... As for the tone of the article, you have to understand that Wikipedia articles should be encyclopedic, it should not be written to accommodate and to promote brands. For example, in the sub-article Coronation night, instead of summarizing the events that took place on the coronation night (it's actually a day) itself, a nonsensical facts are written about the local networks that secured the rights to air the said events. These facts may only interest a specific group of people and is selected based on the biases of the editors (It is a fact that aside from the big 3, all Solar channels aired it including ETC, not to mention Fox of United States which is one of the owner of MUO). The references about Solar producing the coronation night and other televised ancillary events are also odd because they only came from one source which is the press release given by the sponsors to the local news organizations. We know that Fox is the origin of the production, at least that's what Steve Harvey reiterated in the coronation night itself when he said "Miss Universe on Fox." Hollyckuhno (talk) 01:47, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So if I'm following you correctly, you have issues with: a) verifying the Contestants section and b) the content of the Pageant section.
a) The first reference in the contestants section leads to biographies of contestants (and those other points). Even as a dead link, it's not a difficult thing to research and correct (two clicks). The other sub-sections probably do need more work but that can be highlighted with a {{refimprove section}} tag or more {{cn}} ones.
b) Including content that you disagree with doesn't necessarily make it promotional. Broadcasters are occasionally included in event articles. Assuming that everyone knows that this TV company ran the event is like assuming that a) doesn't need verifying because it's common knowledge. It's not. I don't understand your secondary point on Solar and Fox, or whereabouts in the article you are referring to. "instead of summarizing the events that took place" is a good point. The article does lack detail on what took place during the event and that could be highlighted using the {{expand section}} tag.
I have removed the two article tags for more specific ones detailed above. Fuebaey (talk) 19:23, 1 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Runner-ups[edit]

I think we should recognize the runner0ups during the pageant. It was announced during the after-party of the Miss Universe 2016, the night of the coronation date. According to Pia Wurtzbach's Facebook post,"There's no Official announcement during the coronation but it was announced during the after party" it was listed there that the 3rd Runner-up was Philippines, 4th Runner-up was Kenya and the 5th Runner-up was Thailand.

It is not Ariadna Gutierrez of Colombia who passed on the crown to Iris. Instead, it was Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines. And we all know what happened in there. Rjvdavid (talk) 08:50, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
