Magnets

Technically, the CAP program is not a magnet program, right? So why does the page say there are two magnet programs?

Rivalry

What about the school's rivalry with RMHS (Richard Montgomery) ? I went to both their Open Houses (before choosing RM) and both talked about rivalry with each other. Shouldn't that be mentioned ?--151.200.36.244 16:04, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Actually, although RMHS mentioned Blair, Blair doesn't really consider RM a rival. According to the students I've asked at Blair, Blair's main rival is Thomas Jefferson in Virginia. Sorry RM. 72.66.30.109 00:59, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Speaking as a Blair alum... We don't really have a rival. For the magnet TJ is somewhat of a rival, but not all that much. A few years ago a newspaper article tried to create a rivalry with Whitman, but everyone thought it was stupid. --Alynna 02:07, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

I found this SCO article from 2009 about a former rivalry with Bethesda Chevy Chase High School. The article mentions a current rivalry with Northwood. Both schools are located on University Blvd; a rivalry between the two seems logical. -- SophistiKitten (talk) 23:26, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

General tone

Do any other Blair alumni find the page rather skewed? I feel like there's an over-emphasis on the magnet programs and an under-emphasis on the rest of the school (and I'm a magnet alum). I realize that the programs are part of what makes the school notable, but that's certainly not all (it has to be one of the more diverse high schools in the country, for example). There's no information about the school's role within the new downcounty consortium, for example.

I really agree. This page is totally skewed towards the magnet program, and very little about the other aspects of the school. I would add more, but I am not sure what details to include vs. irrevelant details.

But really, should there be such a long paragraph about what classes magnets are required to take? Who cares about that at all? I am a magnet graduate, and I certainly do not. I would delete the entire thing, but is there any reason why it should be kept. Why would anyone ever want to know that magnets have to take data systems and algorithms "which mr. heidler used to teach." I agree though that the unique classes of the magnet program is important information.

• I think the tone is fine. Since Blair isn't generally noted for its athletic acheivement, the magnet programs represent the best public face of the school, and as such should be emphasized. Aside from the noteworthy diversity, the non-magnet population generally is known more for dubious statistics, such as the highest failing freshman rate in the county. I do wish the article would mention the excellence of the Magnet teachers, for instance that many of them gave up lucrative careers in industry to do something they believed in.

Notable Alumni

I think we should make a distinction between notable alumni who are actually public figures versus alumni who are not. I don't have anything against Sam Henig (I graduated in the same class), but she doesn't have a wiki-entry, CJR's entry is a very short stub, and she is only an intern (albeit she is claimed to be a notable one). In the past I was tempted to put other alumni who have won major awards and accolades up, but realized that most of the notable alumni were celebrities or at the least relatively visible to the public. I don't think an intern at a specialist magazine counts in that regard, or we could fill up the notable alumni list with thousands upon thousands of alumni that have jobs or internships at major companies.

Image Question

My question is whether a site plan of the school can be added to the Campus section under fair use. Although the section currently is not fully developed, it will eventually describe the campus in detail; the site plan image would help significantly. joturner 22:17, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

If this is a public high school, the site plan is a public record. If the high school is private, the site plan is a public record if it has been filed in any public office, like the one that issues building permits or checks safety conditions. GeorgeLouis 03:05, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

National Merit

Magnet students have been ... National Merit Semifinalists (more Semifinalists than any other school in Maryland for nine years running, and the most nationally the past two years[citation needed], despite an enrollment of only around 100 per year

Brevity

All the information that's been added since I was last here is great, except the page is now loaded with information like "Traditionally, the central courtyard is reserved for the seniors and the west one for the faculty members, especially during lunch periods", lists of classes for every department, and what appears to be boilerplate text from the Magnet website.

Egads!

Has anyone noticed that this article, an article about a high school, is nearly as long as the article on the country of Brazil? And additionally, even with its prodigious length, it still, after 9 years, is a start-class article? I am hoping that due to a nearly two year inactivity here on the talk page, that maybe I could start trying to trim it down and bring it up? Sports teams

Technically, the cross country team doesn't have specific varsity and junior varsity teams. Should there be a separate symbol for this team, and others similar to it, in which varsity and junior varsity is divided up by meet, or is that overkill?173.79.25.71 (talk) 19:00, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
