2008 comments[edit]

While the Native Sons of the Golden West may have been "nativist" early in it's history, the organization has since opened membership to all native born Californians regardless of ethnicity or gender. It is clear that the author of this entry either has a biased view of the organization or is relying on very outdated sources. Doug (talk) 21:15, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The section on the past activities clearly states it is using contemporansous sources, and that it was their past behavior. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 21:56, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the article on the NSGW uses the past tense while discussing the previous nativist behavior of the Native Sons, the over all tenor of the article leaves the casual reader with the impression that the modern NSGW is still racist and nativist. Furthermore, the "contemporaneous" source is a secondary source which quotes a statement that is clearly no longer supported by the NSGW nor it's sister organization the Native Daughters.Doug (talk) 21:01, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The undeniable nativist racism of the organization's history is an indelible part of its legacy that cannot be wiped from the pages of the history books, and by extension, this encyclopedia. To the extent to which it is fact, well, it is baggage, let's be clear. This ugly and embarrassing chapter (or 6) of it's history may be an unfortunate albatross from an organizational development standpoint, but notwhithstanding that fact, it may well deserve even greater mention in the context of this article if properly sourced. I look forward to reading more untold truths about this organization.Critical Chris (talk) 20:48, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Including the ones you don't want to hear, I hope. My high school, Ravenswood ( East Palo Alto), had a marker put up by them in the 1950's dedicating the school to 'Liberty, Justice, Tolerance'. When it was replaced by Ravenswood shopping mall, the marker was considered important enough to put in the Main mall sign, and is still there.

Incidentally, it is not quite right to say the group is open to both sexes. They have a parallel group, the Native Daughters, however the two work together on most things. 24.104.73.18 (talk) 16:03, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to article in January, 2010[edit]

It seems that the recent changes to this article are not consistent with the policy regarding the neutral point of view, the policy on reliable sources, and the policy on original research. The recent changes do not seem to be in the style of an encyclopedia, but seem to be advocating a strongly held and negative personal point of view. I am not trying to defend the 19th century attitudes of the Native Sons of the Golden West, but believe that harshly critical comments should be quotations or paraphrases from reputable historians properly cited rather than a Wikipedian's personal feelings. What do other editors think? Jim Heaphy (talk) 06:15, 9 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
