Requested move 23 October 2019[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. The result of the move request was: Moved to New Zealand International Convention Centre fire which seems to be the consensus title. Everyone agreed "Fire"→"fire" and that "2019" isn't really needed. No one opposed "SkyCity"→"NZICC" but if that's controversial either drop a note on my talk page or open a new RM. (closed by non-admin page mover) Wug·a·po·des 01:50, 9 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2019 SkyCity Convention Centre Fire → 2019 New Zealand International Convention Centre fire – The building that caught fire is the NZICC, the SkyCity Convention Centre is a separate, existing building. Comment. Without committing either way yet, there is no justification for the year in the name. It's not likely that there will be another fire in the centre in the future, and even if there is, we can move to a name with year to resolve any ambiguity. If this requested move does not succeed, "Fire" should be decapitalized, so it would become SkyCity Convention Centre fire. Akld guy (talk) 23:57, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. I agree "fire" needs to be lowercase. There have been several city centre fires in the past which might be appropriate for articles; in 1858 much of the commercial centre was destroyed [2] and in 1901 there were three fires, the most notable being at the Grand Hotel, with five people killed, so I think the year is a useful way of distinguishing this article, especially in categories such as History of Auckland.-gadfium 07:28, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We're all thinking along the same lines...good. The convention centre that caught fire is not part of the existing SkyCity complex at the base of the Skytower, which already includes a convention centre. The one that caught fire is on the other side of Hobson Street from the Skytower and SkyCity complex and is adjacent to the TVNZ buildings on the same block. That's why TVNZ had to reschedule some broadcasts and use emergency studios. Akld guy (talk) 23:52, 24 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. The closest thing to a definitive list of major NZ fires is probably on the FENZ page. All use the reference form Location, year and have "fire" in lowercase.
