Spelling[edit]

His name is spelled wrong - it should be Oswald or Os Guinness not "Guiness"Brian0324 22:52, 9 November 2006 (UTC) Actually it is spelt correctly,[reply]

OS GUINNESS, is the correct spelling.

Genealogy[edit]

His connection to the brewer, Arthur Guinness, is as follows: Arthur Guinness (1725-1803) begat John Grattan Guinness, who begat Henry Grattan Guinness (1835-1910), who begat a son - Gershom Whitfield Guinness (who lived in China during the Boxer Rebellion) and a daughter - Mary Geraldine Guinness (1865-1949). Gershom was Os's grandfather. This makes Arthur his great-great-great-grandfather. SlackerMom 17:39, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with new article[edit]

There are various problems with the new article. Some of them are easy to fix (e.g., Wikify terms and format it properly), whereas some of them are harder to fix (e.g., the original research and neutrality). The problem with the original research is that the text exclusively cites primary sources by Guinness, not secondary or tertiary reliable sources. Hence, his notability is not independently established, and his place in the greater cultural milieu is not clear. Also, it is not apparent that each of the areas covered deserves the relative amount of space that it receives. How important is the Trinity Forum or the content of one book or another (many of which are summarized in the various sections -- cf. WP:BOOK), for instance? The neutrality problems are mostly minor phrasing issues, etc.

Also, blogs aren't reliable sources so I tagged those.

Finally, I worry about the copyright of the text that was obviously copy-n-pasted from somewhere. --Flex (talk/contribs) 19:40, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that there are significant problems with neutrality in this thing. "Os Guinness has made a significant impact on the world around him" -- well, that's not really the harbinger of neutrality, is it? Who's going to start fixing this? PatriciaT (talk) 23:39, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Be bold! --Flex (talk/contribs) 01:22, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so that statement is not quite NPOV. Now that it's gone, what other "significant problems" exist in this article? I don't see any. Unless somebody brings some up, I think we should remove the neutrality objection as "addressed." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fool4jesus (talkcontribs) 22:05, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Propose article issue tag removal[edit]

Since the article has Fact tags at all locations that are causing doubt among some editors, proposing that the article issue tag be removed per WP:overtagging. --Firefly322 (talk) 12:57, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose: given the sheer volume of unsourced material, 4 small inline tags & a single line in the 'Article issues' template do not seem to be disproportionate. HrafnTalkStalk(P) 13:39, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose: continuing, for same reasons indicate above, though with reference to the more extensive current tagging. Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 21:31, 21 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed addition of biographical material[edit]

I recently heard Mr. Guinness speak at the University of Oklahoma, in the Physics building. I think it would be helpful to include some biographical information he mentioned. He suffered with his family in a Communist Chinese prison camp. He had two? brothers die there, but he survived. His mother was a pillar of strength to him in this period. Doubtless, this information can be perfected, especially if Mr. Guinness himself would participate. Herb Swanson (talk) 18:36, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:V: "The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth: whether readers can check that material in Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether editors think it is true." (bold original, italics mine) The information has to have been published in order to be included. If you can find a reliable source that has published this information, then you're welcome to add it. In text note to editors moved here[edit]

The following note to editors appeared in the reference section, with <nowiki> markup. It is moved here as the more appropriate place, for general access:

See [1] for an explanation of how to generate footnotes using the [bracketed] "ref" and "/ref" tags, and the template below.

Cheers, and here's to good further editing per WP:VERIFY, especially with regard to thorough, independent sourcing. Le Prof 73.210.155.96 (talk) 18:50, 21 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notability and sources[edit]

Have tagged page with notability. It's been tagged for self-published sources and needing more citations since 2016, and I can't find anything to add. I see that notability was raised here as an issue in 2008.

Also, not sure that description "author and social critic" is accurate. He seems to be a writer on religion. Tacyarg (talk) 00:08, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
