The earnings section makes no sense. $0.0002 per song? At 7.5% that's 0.000015 not 0.00015 as reported in the article. At the reported $61,000 earnings that's over 4 Billion downloads from a country with a population of only 50 million. This needs to be corrected by a person who knows the real figures and is capable of basic arithmetic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.170.200.183 (talk) 05:18, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Profile

Real name: Park Jae Sang (박재상) Born: December 31, 1977 Blood type: O Education: Boston University, Berkley College of Music

Biography

PSY (싸이) is a Korean hip hop artist. Although not a mainstream hip hop artist, he is popular underground due to his great sense of humour and his unique concerts (he always imitates the greatest female star of the day (in 2006, it was Lee Hyori). He has appeared on numerous variety programs, including Good Sunday: X-Man and The Golden Fishery.

PSY is unique amongst Korean singers. The most obvious fact being that he received his education in the United States, graduating from both Boston University and Berklee College of Music. He showed off his own sense of style and music in his first album, which also confirmed his creativity. He was fined for this album, the reason that his music promoted inappropriate content for underage listeners. His second album was also banned, amazingly enough for the opposite reason, with people claiming it was inappropriate for listeners over the age of eighteen.

[This isn't correct. He has said in interviews (posted on YouTube) that he did not graduate from either college.]Marzolian (talk) 02:57, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

The top part should be edited, as it currently makes no sense it mentions "A few weeks later, Gangnam Style became the most accessed YouTube video of all time having generated one billion views" and "On December 21, 2012, his music video for Gangnam Style exceeded 1 billion views on YouTube, becoming the first user to ever do so in YouTube's history." I'd say drop the first sentence, between october and december 21st is more then a few weeks. If needed second sentance could be edited to incorperate the " becoming the first user to ever do so in YouTube's history." part — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.142.102.77 (talk) 22:27, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

No, because the first character used in "jae"(재) is pretty much always read as the letter j (except on some occasions it can be read as ch). That, and "sung" is actually just another way of romanizing "seong"(성). HerroLink 09:17, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Edit Request on 12 September 2012. It's 5mil won, NOT 500mil. Reasoning: The article states 500만원. The translation of 만원 is 10,000. Therefore, 500 x 10,000 = 5mil. This roughly translates to $5,000 USD as opposed to $500,000 USD. (Half a million US dollars for possession of marijuana? Recent page moves (Morning Sunshine, etc.)

(Morning Sunshine moved page Talk:PSY (musician) to Talk:Psy (rapper) over redirect: No CamelCase per WP:MOS.) 04:02, 24 September 2012‎ Morning Sunshine (talk | contribs)‎ m . . (11,812 bytes) (0)

Err, so I don't see that in WP:MOS, nor in WP:TITLEFORMAT which seems more relevant. Instead it says,
Use lower case, except for proper names: The initial letter of a title is almost always capitalized; subsequent words in a title are not, unless they are part of a proper name, and so would be capitalized in running text; when this is done, the title is simple to link to in other articles: Northwestern University offers more graduate work than a typical liberal arts college. For initial lower case letters, as in eBay, see the technical restrictions page. See also the special rules on capitalization in bird naming. For more guidance, see Naming conventions (capitalization).
So...I think the question is whether he is PSY or Psy in the canonical proper form. And I don't know the answer, but I suspect it is the former and the move is wrong? Oh, and p.s., it's not a great idea to call block capitals "camelcase"; usually that means stuff like fooBar, though sometimes it means FooBar (confusing!), but I don't think in any case it would be FOOBAR. So ironically "Psy" is actually one form of camelCase, though I don't really agree with using the word that way. jhawkinson (talk) 04:57, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
  • its written as "PSY" on PSY's official Youtube,Twitter and Facebook page. Time Magazine[1], The Washington Post[2], ABC News[3] and The New York Times[4] also uses "PSY and not "Psy". Also, he's more than just a rapper he's also a singer-song writer. -A1candidate (talk) 09:08, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
  • In Korean (Hangul) it's clearly written as an abbreviation and not acronym or initialism... Usually all-caps names have been written with initial-caps in Wikipedia. Monni (talk) 09:24, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
  • I think an exception should be made for PSY because all official sources use "PSY". His official website also writes "Ever since his first song, PSY has...", as do most other reliable sources on the internet that i've mentioned earlier. The term "Psy (rapper)" is simply misleading because he does a lot more than rapping -A1candidate (talk) 20:09, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

I agree with A1candidate here, every available sources shows his name as 'PSY', and considering his ever growing popularity, dropping the (rapper) part of his title and just sticking to what is known would be best. Besides he's a song writer and producer to so its best to just keep it too his name. BosleyTree (talk) 20:13, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

I agree on changing the (rapper) part of the article title... We should use the closest available qualifier for disambiguation. Monni (talk) 20:20, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Monni, what do you mean that "it's clearly written as an abbreviation"? An abbreviation for what? Why is it clear? Can you explain for those of us who are not speakers of Korean? jhawkinson (talk) 05:25, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

If you transliterate the Hangul version, it is Ssai... It can be abbreviation of anything starting with Psy... if it were acronym or initialism, the transliteration would match how the individual letters are pronounced in English (for example Pee-es-wae, because there is no "ai" in Hangul). Monni (talk) 09:44, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Pronounciation

User:BosleyTree and I had this conversation on his talk and since there have been edits to the pronounciation (adding IPA but also removing and changing things), I think it's best to copy it here:

(PSY pronounced "sigh"; hey, WP:BEBOLD right?)
Undid revision 514054745 by Jhawkinson (talk) From what i've heard in his songs, he calls himself PSY as 'P, S, Y' the sounds of the letters.
I am advised that both he and Ellen pronounce it "sigh" in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZmkU5Pg1sw. Is this WP:OR? What do you think?jhawkinson (talk) 22:19, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
I will admit, since undoing the edit i have heard on the news people pronouncing it as sigh, but he still goes by PSY himself. But it probably would be best to go with sigh considering what people will be hearing so yeah, you should go with your edit. BosleyTree (talk) 22:42, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

But then User:Heat_fan1 added IPA and we lost the "individually." I've restored the individually and the non-IPA pronounciations (which are generally more accessible than IPA, consistent with WP:PRON. jhawkinson (talk) 05:51, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

It's more, when i've heard him being talked about on the tv, radio ect, he's called 'sigh', but then when i actually listen to his songs and he refers to himself in several songs with the individual 'P, S, Y' and never as 'sigh'. So i don't know how that works and what counts. BosleyTree (talk) 07:26, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
"sigh" is just close approximation of pronunciation of his stage name (direct transliteration would be "ssai" like I said above). Spelling the individual letters of the English version (of his stage name) in song lyrics might be for emphasis. Monni (talk) 16:07, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Psy (rapper)

Im wondering if it might be a good idea to change it from Psy (rapper) to Psy (entertainer). "Rapper" could be a misleading term because like many other K-Pop artists including, T.O.P (entertainer), he does a lot more than rapping. I think "entertainer" would summarize his job scope more accurately, in my opinion -A1candidate (talk) 08:43, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

It should be PSY -A1candidate (talk) 06:05, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
As some have stated above, there is no evidence this anything other than a trademark - WP:MOSTM. Per English conventions, proper names that are capitalized imply an acronym (MIT, NASA, etc). Psy is not an acronym, it stands for the word "Psycho" as stated in his interviews - thus it should be written as Psy. Like other groups such as SISTAR and SHINee, they are written this way on CDs and videos to showcase their trademark. It doesn't mean in formal writing, you should write it this way (ala companies like ROLEX). Writing PSY here and there makes all the writing distracting. There are just as many sources that do not use capital letters - Billboard, KBS, United Nations, Wall Street Journal... and these are just some of the links from the references on this article. Evaders99 (talk) 09:22, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Its the abbreviation for PSYcho, taken from his debut album PSY from the PSYcho World!. While there are also sources using PSY including Time Magazine, ABC News, The New York Times, and Billboard, which uses PSY in this article, I think most other articles using "Psy" may have spelled it with lowercase because Wikipedia does it. Just like how much of the mainstram media calls him a "rapper" instead of a "singer" just because Wikipedia says so. -A1candidate (talk) 09:07, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
I seriously doubt KBS sources itself from Wikipedia. Even if you were to use "PSYcho", it's a trademark which would be written Psycho; it's abbreviated form in English is Psy. There's no precedent in English for a single word being capitalized into letters that isn't an acronym or initialism. There's no difference than other foreign language albums where WP:MOSTM would be preferable, like Love (Mika Nakashima album) being the article title for LØVE or I Spy I Spy as i spy i spy. Evaders99 (talk) 01:21, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Everywhere I've ever seen it, it's been stylized as PSY. PSY lover 19:24, 7 November 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:558:6045:CA:D5ED:3272:80D0:5A5 (talk)

This article should be moved back to the normal capitalization "Psy". There are sources that capitalize his name entirely, but there are also sources that don't: the LA Times, The Washington Post, Time, The Huffington Post, ABC News, the New York Daily Times, The Telegraphy, Rolling Stone... I can go on. Note how some of the sources I provided are also some provided by A1candidate, like ABC News and Time. There is no reason to have this article title in all caps. See Talk:DJ Ozma#Requested move: DJ OZMA → DJ Ozma regarding caps, we follow Wikipedia guidelines as they are written, not whether outside sources decide to capitalize letters or not. — ξxplicit 01:47, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello,

I am doing a public blog over PSY for one of my classes,

and one of our assignments is to edit the wiki page over the topic that we are doing.

These are the changes I would like to implement if possible:

PSY’s wiki

Wiki Assignment: brainstorm what to change over PSY’s wiki page

• Add partner(s) to background info, his wife: Yoo Hye-yeon

• Add this reference to his wife: http://www.kpopstarz.com/articles/12436/20120812/psy-talks-about-his-wife.htm

• Add children to background info: 2 (twins)

• Add wall street journal interview to 1996-00 Arrival in the United States and career beginnings: “I rarely went to school. At that time, I seriously doubted that you could learn creativity in school. Music isn't something you can just learn from other people. Sometimes I regret missing classes. In hindsight, though, I became more creative because of the years of rebellion. I started out as a hip-hop musician and listened to Eminem and Tupac a lot. I love their music, especially their lyrics.”

• Reference to interview: http://blogs.wsj.com/korearealtime/2012/08/09/psy-reveals-all-about-%E2%80%98gangnam-style%E2%80%99/

Missmiao emac (talk) 22:24, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Already done - Partners and Children can't be added to background info due to the nature of Template:Infobox musical artist. They are already included in personal life. About the interview, that information is already included in the section. I don't think we need a long quote in an already long biography. Vacationnine 06:14, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Controversy

Is there really a need to display the full lyrics of PSY's controversial song? I noticed I just got reverted for summarizing a bit of the song's lyrics. I know Wikipedia isn't censored and everything but the lyrics are already provided in the reference. And I really dont think its suitable (nor necessary) to incorporate the entire lyrics into the controversy section -A1candidate (talk) 22:31, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

This comment is not much your former edition. You added Psy's full comment.[1] And your another abbreviation editon don't get across the lyrics. Your abbreviation sentences mislead views to read American have also tortured Iraqi famillies.[2][3]--Syngmung (talk) 03:13, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
You never explained why you feel that the lyrics are unsuitable for inclusion? If you know that Wikipedia isn't censored, then why would you try to censor it? The actualy lyrics are important so people will get their impact. No one clicks on the reference links. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.104.153.83 (talk) 22:21, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
Among other reasons, there's still uncertainty as to whether the lyrics have been translated correctly. According to the Washington Post, the lyrics by CNN's user-submitted translation (which is re-copied here) wasn't translated correctly after all. There is no consensus (yet) as to which version of the lyrics is correct, but the one quoted in this Wikipedia article was "based on shoddy translation". If you want to include the lyrics then at least make sure you translate it correctly -A1candidate (talk) 22:56, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

2 Legit 2 Quit (Hammer vs MC Hammer)

If anyone cares, for what it's worth, it should technically be Hammer not MC Hammer when mentioning him at the American Music Awards (which is missing in this article but present in the G.S. song article) and Dick Clark's New Years Eve event (in the intro of this article) since he was billed as Hammer (as seen during the performance on TV as well) and because he was Hammer (and now is again when performing the mashup) during his 2 Legit 2 Quit album after dropping MC. Just for technical reasons, maybe someone should/could change that. Hammer for example. Thanks! :) Happy new year... 99.129.112.89 (talk) 07:17, 3 January 2013 (UTC) P.S. Edit Request On 23 February 2013

First time I have checked this page in a long time and I see they are many mistakes. As I am no longer able to edit the page myself. I have summarised the key points below.

Firstly the track list for "Remake & Mix 18 Beon" is incorrect, many of the songs Korean titles have been mistranslated to English. I would add also the album was banned due to vulgarisms in several songs. On closer inspection almost all the song titles in all his albums have been mistranslated or translated too literally and makes no sense in the English language. It would be better if the Korean song titles are kept Korean.

From memory he did not appear in the first Wet Dreams movie.

Gangnam Style was released in January 2012 not July, also Yoo Jae-Seok originally featured in it but was removed on the album version.

He was signed to YG Entertainment much earlier than 2010, I think it was about 2004.

The article states he is worldwide known for Gangnam Style, however in different countries he is known for many different songs most of all Right Now which country by country is his most well known worldwide song.

PSY has a huge production discography which is totally ignored in the article.

They are about 5 music video appearances I can think of which are not mentioned most of them are YG Entertainment music videos by artists like Perry and Jinusean.

Due to the contracts at YG Entertainment PSY would not have earned any royalties from his YG released songs.

I would also like added his anti-Chinese songs rather than concentrate on the anti-American ones which are seen as parodies rather than anything sincere.

Also it would be nice to see a section about his famous CF's and the Psycho fan club which was one of the biggest idol fan clubs in Asia before being forced to disband in 2010.

Finally for a long time his name was pronounced as Psy and over the years became 싸이 (pronounced sah-ee) and then back to PSY and increasingly P.S.Y.

Thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:630:301:5222:6163:BFB0:1B44:26DE (talk) 15:28, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

2002-2004: PSY Protests The US

Let's leave tbe lyrics in to show what an anti-American so called, artist he is. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.74.4.171 (talk) 00:48, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

According to the media reports, PSY took part in protests against the U.S. military in 2002 and again in 2004. During the first protest, in response to the acquittal of American soldiers whose military vehicle killed two 13-year-old Korean girls, PSY smashed a model of a U.S. military tank on stage, the reports said.

But it’s the news of the second performance, in 2004, that may make Americans reconsider their adoration of the K-pop star. A Korean Christian missionary had been beheaded by Islamic extremists in Iraq, and anger in South Korea soon turned to the United States and its presence in Iraq. That’s when PSY reportedly covered a song by the South Korean metal band N.E.X.T. that contained the following (translated) lyrics:

Kill those (expletive)Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives Kill those (expletive)Yankees who ordered them to torture Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law and fathers Kill them all slowly and painfully — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.51.129.73 (talk) 14:24, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

There are a few issues with this. The first is that this is already mentioned in the controversies section of the article. The second, this breaks PoV in several ways. To quote, "...that may make Americans reconsider their adoration of the K-pop star," "PSY Protests The US," and the actual lyrics to the song which are already summed up in the section that was previously mentioned. Third, there seems to be no reason to add this into the section anyways, except for maybe a small note in the 2001-02 and 2003-2009 sections of the article, which I would suggest as being a potentially better idea with a link to the controversies section within it. I think it should be noted that at the time this song was sung, PSY was a member of the South Korean military. He wasn't just singing as a private citizen. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.104.153.83 (talk) 22:18, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Psy (entertainer)Psy – Proposing move of this page to Psy, and the move of the disambiguation page to Psy (disambiguation). It seems pretty clear that by whatever measure you use - notability, importance in music history, internet history, popular culture - the South Korean singer is clearly the primary topic. 84.92.117.93 (talk) 20:09, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

When "entertainer" is used of someone who is not an entertainer but merely a singer, then it is a neologism. The word has been stretched in recent pop usage - perhaps through awareness that many rappers cannot actually sing? But in any case it's a neologism in this usage. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:47, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
I thought the definition of "entertainer" included singers. See this dictionary search for "entertainer": "a singer, comedian, dancer, reciter, or the like, especially a professional one." Wouldn't Psy qualify? What's your definition? Dohn joe (talk) 01:42, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

"Entertainer is anyone who amuses or diverts or delights or interprets or thrills, and the like" Opdycke lexicon of word selection 1950 p407

Psy is not an entertainer, entertainer means someone who entertains. Psy sings, he is a singer. Yes singers come under the umbrella of entertainers. In any case Google Book sources show this usage is a neologism. In ictu oculi (talk) 02:49, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
How exactly do Google Book sources show that "entertainer=singer" or vice-versa is a neologism? That usage has been established for well over a century at least. Dohn joe (talk) 17:20, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
It's not quite a "neologism" but I think I get the intent of the use of that word here. While a singer is a type of entertainer, it would be very unusual indeed for anyone to describe someone who is in as specific a profession as "singer" with the generic "entertainer". So, we might say to someone: "there will be "entertainers at the gala, including dancers and jugglers and the singer, Psy", but if we were talking about a single singer specifically, we would never normally say "the entertainer, Psy will be there." To that extent then, it feels odd to use it as a parenthetical disambiguator.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:08, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Psy is no longer the only person to hit 1 billion views

Can someone please remove the part about him being the only person ever to reach 1 billion views on Youtube as Justin Bieber's "Baby" also achieved this landmark.

"On October 23, 2012, Psy met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the United Nations Headquarters where Ban expressed his desire to work with the singer because of his "unlimited global reach".[4] On December 21, 2012, his music video for "Gangnam Style" exceeded 1 billion views on YouTube, becoming the first and currently only video to do so in the website's history.[5][6] Psy was subsequently recognized by the media as the "King of YouTube"." — Preceding unsigned comment added by BaronOfDaricus (talkcontribs) 03:58, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Banned vs Restricted Sales

This article mentions in multiple places some of PSY's songs being "banned". This is misleading, as sales of those songs were restricted to adults. If a movie in the US was rated R or X, would we refer to it as being "banned"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.51.185.32 (talk) 10:18, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Unlike the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family which assigned the ban to it, our MPAA is NOT a government agency and can't actually ban jack squat. They can only request theaters or stores to restrict sales to adults, on those products the they decide are not appropriate for kids and teens. While most chains and businesses agree to follow their ratings, there is no legal requirement for them to do so. Any theater or store, can sell a ticket or DVD to a child, for a product with an R rating - and the same for music or games with with M or Adult Only ratings, because the ESRB is also not a government agency. And when states have tried to enact laws, requiring retailers to follow the ratings of groups like the MPAA and ESRB, they were declared unconstitutional, as most any kind of entertainment is considered protected freedom of expression, under the First Amendment.
I don't get the impression that is the case with the Ministry's rulings - they are a government agency, and it would appear there are legal consequences, if a South Korean retailer ignored the ban. CleverTitania (talk) 05:23, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

Yale Book Reference

The opening mention to the yale book is odd and really out of context in describing Psy, and comes off as promoting the yale book. I recommend removing it. 46.99.32.240 (talk) 21:24, 1 June 2014 (UTC) Albanian, seer 2 billionth of "Gangnam Style"

Albanians are keen to be part of extraordinary events, not only in the country but also in the world, confirms the fact that an Albanian has watched two billionth time most clicked video in YouTube history, "Gangnam Style ". The song "Gangnam Style" sung by PSY has reached 2 billion clicks, and this has made the rounds of the world.

But, of course, in these reports is putting a question mark over who could be the 2 billionth viewer of this clip.

In the Telegraph editorial came an e-mail from Neziri Adriatic, an Albanian who was so excited that there were two billionth man who has watched this video, that has forgotten the show comes from and how old it is,

How would that be, he shows quite accidentally watched the video. " I am the 2 billionth man who has gone this video . Even before I heard this song in the disco , or at weddings , but never in my computer , because I do not like it. "

" I heard yesterday from friends that the song " Gangnam Style " is ready to make the 2 billion views . I said go home and watch the video ... is sought in YouTubve and suddenly came 1999999999 and when I clicked 2 billion . Once hailed strong at home as much as told me what happened ( scared ) . I am one of 2 billion who watched the video , I told the family , who told me that this is nothing . "

" I am very excited by this fact , I am the seer 2 billion of this video . I made a screen print to show that is true, " he wrote in the e- mail Adriatic Neziri , who claims to be the viewer 's 2 billionth of historical videos of YouTube .

Not yet known exactly if Neziri Adriatic , but the picture that he has offered as evidence seems quite reliable . He is a lucky man , but sin that will not get any reward from Psy , who deems this report will certainly do that .

" Gangam Style " broke all world records last year becoming the video with the most clicks on YouTube and became an international hit , due to the distinctive clip .

At the bottom of the "3. Legacy" section, please add: At the peak of Psy's popularity, in October 2012, Billboard began including Youtube streaming counts in their formula for calculating rankings in order to be more accurate.[6] Gangnam Style's worldwide phenomenon was not well represented on Billboard charts before this change because Psy had no radio campaign in the US that would allow him to climb the Billboard charts through radio plays [7]. This change gave an advantage to pop artists, whose genre is best represented in a video format, making it easier for K-Pop artists and independent pop artists with no radio campaign to rank on the Billboard chart.

Translating "Oppan Gangnam Style"

Based on my knowledge of Chinese as well as online references on Korean [16], I think "This guy is Gangnam Style" is the most accurate English translation; "big brother" as a term of familiar respect is not used in English, and the more general tone is of Psy referring to himself in the third person. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Power~enwiki (talkcontribs) 08:03, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi,

I was wondering if an edit could be added to the end of "unexpected international breakthrough". The information came from an article from EBSCO Host. I copied the edit I wanted to add down below.

"The breakthrough that Psy managed to accomplish on YouTube was not only a huge accomplishment for him, but it was also an accomplishment for the KPop community. Gangnam Style was able to bring awareness to the music genre, internationally, to other people that may not have been aware of it and contributed to the Hallyu Wave.[1]"
