largest protected area in Europe?[edit]

from the article: "Rago borders Sweden's Padjelanta National Park, which in turn borders two other parks, and the combined of all the protected land is a total of 5,700 square kilometres (2,200 sq mi)—creating the largest protected area in Europe." – cf. [1]

let's check:
171 km² Rago nasjonalpark (Norway)
+ 1984 km² Padjelanta nationalpark (Sweden)
+ 1970 km² Sareks nationalpark (Sweden)
+ 1278 km² (formerly 1500 km²) Stora Sjöfallets nationalpark (Sweden)
= 5403 km² together (formerly 5625 km²)

The two northern/eastern Wadden sea national parks, if also viewed combined, are larger:
1466 km² Nationalpark Vadehavet (Denmark)
+ 4415 km² Nationalpark Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer (Germany)
= 5881 km² together

If you ignore a small dividing stripe (mouth of the Elbe/nautical channel), you could also add the other two German Wadden sea national parks:
+ 3450 km² Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer (Germany)
+137 km² Nationalpark Hamburgisches Wattenmeer (Germany)
= 9468 km² all together
And the Wadden sea protected area is even larger (>12000 km²), if you further add the bordering Wadden sea areas of the Netherlands (other types of protected areas, only partly national parks; see eg. Waddenzee with 2714 km²).

Please notice that there might exist other protected areas in Europe which are larger than the Wadden Sea (i don't know), but the statement about the Norway/Sweden area is obviously wrong. Holger1959 (talk) 21:50, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
