Sugarcane rail networks[edit]

I was going to add at least one of these photo thumbs to the Mackay section, but the page doesn't mention sugarcane rail networks. Are they being excluded from this page or is this an omission as I suspect? - Shiftchange (talk) 03:31, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd go with "D'oh, forgot about them!" :-). I don't see any problem with adding the pics, and adding some sugarcane rail transport information too, if you like. As far as I can see, there is no wiki article specifically about sugar cane railways, so you might be able to help fill the gaps.(Moved your images to the RH side, so as not to interfere with the discussion points.) Queensland line articles[edit]

I'd like to start doing articles for each line ever operated by Queensland Rail. I think Wikipedia's coverage of New South Wales railways beats Queensland's hands down. Nearly every rural line, even those long disused such as the Captains Flat line, has an article. Many have route diagrams.

The thing is, where can I find information about Queensland railway lines? NSW is fortunate enough to have Rolfe Bozier's excellent website, http://www.nswrail.net - would anyone happen to know of resources where I can find the history, stations, distances, etc. of QLD lines? --TripleThree (talk) 12:44, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The official source for the currently operating lines is the QR Network Access division - http://www.networkaccess.qr.com.au/ - a series of maps is on their site. QRIG is a railway enthusiast site with content on various aspects of the Queensland railways.
For going into the actual history of lines, if you are lucky the Queensland Heritage Register will have something - try a search here. Otherwise you would need to chase up books on the lines (usually out of print - try libraries) or covering the history of the towns they go though. Magazines also cover things of interest, the ARHS Queensland division publish 'Sunshine Express', while the ARHS NSW division publish Australian Railway History and Railway Digest.
I'm not a real fan of trying to be 'complete' and making stubs on everything, if you look at Victoria we have hundreds of articles saying "X was a station on line Y" and nothing more. An example of a Queensland article I don't mind is Oakey-Cooyar railway line, Queensland.
I have a book about the electrification of the Queensland suburban, North Coast and coalfield lines, so I might jump in at some point. I wish you luck! Wongm (talk) 03:04, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
http://www.history.qr.com.au/ also has some timelines of the opening of various lines. Wongm (talk) 07:00, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your pointers, Matt. I started on this pet project last night - I've created articles for the South Western line and the Texas branch. The QRIG site has links to "lineside histories" but I can't access them (I don't know if it's a website fault or my browser). The QR network access diagrams are great, but only cover lines currently in operation (still, it shows the junction for the disused Texas branch at Inglewood). Still, I found Texas info from a heritage railway outfit in Warwick.
I notice that Rail transport in Queensland says the South Western line opened as far as Thane in 1904 and Dirranbandi in 1913. Where can I find a reference for that? I haven't included opening dates in the South Western line article; nowadays I try not to make edits that I can't verify. --TripleThree (talk) 12:37, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Public float of QR[edit]

I think this should only have a small mention on this page, the main content living on the Queensland Rail article. Otherwise we get bogged down maintaining two sets of contents. Dunno how cut back it needs to be, perhaps saying it will be divided into two, QR Passenger says government owned and the freight side is being sold in the IPO? Wongm (talk) 12:43, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was moving the full details on the float here with leaving only a summary on the QR page as per WP:SUMMARY. Since the History section in QR is getting too long. Gerry (talk) 12:50, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think the details of the float should be over on the QR page, the history section over there is a bit too long, with some of the more general 'opening of lines' type stuff a better fit here. Wongm (talk) 23:17, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good point, I agree. Gerry (talk) 04:22, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wongm, I have moved the Public float to its own article, since this event will form a big part of both Queensland Rail's and QR National's history in the future. I also placed a pointer to it from both Queensland Rail's and QR National's articles. Gerry (talk) 10:39, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Brisbane River Bridge[edit]

Was this bridge built with dual gauge or was dual gauge added later? Tabletop (talk) 09:09, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean Merivale Bridge, it was built as dual gauge. That allowed the standard gauge to be extended to Roma Street so the Standard gauge passenger trains that used to terminate at South Brisbane could now terminate at Roma Street. Neddy53 (talk) 09:00, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

i beg to differ, it was built with only narrow guage and standard was added and opened in 1986. pga1965 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.202.60.57 (talk) 13:02, 27 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Operators[edit]

The line reading "Queensland Railways sold the line in 1964 to the Gin Gin Cooperative Mill " is inappropriate or irrelevant to this context because there is nothing in the article that tells me what "the line" is. PatrickDunfordNZ (talk) 20:15, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have not precisely identified the line but I have done some tidying up. Biscuittin (talk) 22:35, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Locomotives[edit]

I notice that Category:Queensland locomotives now has several locos that are not listed on this page. Should they all be included here? If not perhaps at the top of the list a sentence could be added describing why these ones are specifically included. - Shiftchange (talk) 23:57, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think the unlisted locos are all steam locos which are no longer in service. I could make it clearer by changing the article names from "locomotive" to "steam locomotive". Alternatively, we could have separate categories for "steam locos" and "diesel locos" or for "current locos" and "past locos". Please discuss. Biscuittin (talk) 22:26, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have now changed the categories to match Category:Western Australian locomotives. The Category:Queensland locomotives now contains only diesel and electric locos and I have created a new Category:Queensland steam locomotives for the steam locos. The Category:Locomotives used in Queensland still contains both steam and diesel but I wonder whether we really need this category. Biscuittin (talk) 13:48, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Locomotives used in Queensland seems to be superfluous. I like the division by type. - Shiftchange (talk) 14:13, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Track gauge[edit]

Could this section tell us what track gauge(s) are in use in Qld? Three paras and not much info. Bleakcomb (talk) 17:23, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

qr network, is on the whole narrow gauge, 1067mm, except for the sections Border to Acacia Ridge(qr owns this line) standard gauge, Acacia Ridge to Roma st(Brisbane) and third rd Park rd to fisherman islands dual gauge narrow/standard. the Belmont tramway(Belmont shire council) was 1067mm and joined the qr network at Norman park. the canungra - beaudesert tramway similarly joined the qr network at beaudesert. pga1965

South East Queensland station formats[edit]

There has been some difference of opinion as to what format the Services by platforms section should take for SE Queensland station articles. Think it prudent to try and gain a consensus, and raise any concerns or areas for refinement editors may have, so a consistent format can be rolled out:

Four formats currently being used (there may be others):

Format A [1]

Format B [2]

Format C [3]

Format D [4]

Voting[edit]

  • Format D as it is clear & concise Coomera81 (talk) 22:01, 12 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Format D because its clear informative. The section should not have a capital p for platform. I would also be concerned as to whether or not the section is encyclopedic but I assume it has become standard practice to add similar information to other station articles. I wouldn't make it a priority because that information can be become out of date fairly quickly and its a little travel guide for me. - Shiftchange (talk) 00:12, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Comment It does seem to be common in articles in other places eg, Redfern railway station & Perth railway station. Agree it should be kept at a high level and not include special circumstances info, or info that is specific to a particular timetable, bearing in mind we are not trying to create a travel guide. By having a link to the TransLink page for each platform, the reader can drill down for the detail. Coomera81 (talk) 07:20, 13 January 2015 (UTC):::[reply]
Comment There are some cases at certain train stations around the country where a limited amount of services may depart out of Platform X at evening peak periods, whilst at other times, they depart out of Platform Y. However, I do agree the occasional departure out of Platforms (due to extreme circumstances such as a dewirement) should not be mentioned. (For example a Caboolture service leaving out of Northgate Platform 1, due to a broken down train blocking Platform 4 is not notable). Coastie43 (talk) 07:52, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Format D More clear and concise, and the link to the TL timetables should enable the user to retrieve further information. Coastie43 (talk) 07:51, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
