Renaming RMAC/RMFAC ---> RMC[edit]

We should be naming conferences such as this one per WP:COMMONNAME. In this case, the conference was commonly known as the "Rocky Mountain Conference" -- not the "Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference" or the "Rocky Mountain Faculty Athletic Conference". Yet, these latter "uncommon" names have worked their way into our coverage -- in this article's title, in conference season categories, in conference standings templates, etc.. I propose renaming all such articles based on common usage data supplied below (based on "hits" in the Newspapers.com database) which supports "Rocky Mountain Conference" as the clear and overwhelming common usage.

Year Rocky Mountain
Conference
Rocky Mountain
Athletic Conference
Rocky Mountain
Faculty Athletic Conference
1911 70 0 4
1914 150 24 0
1917 208 2 0
1920 189 2 0
1923 484 4 0
1926 892 1 0
1929 1,992 13 1
1931 2,624 2 10
1933 3,117 27 5
1935 3,169 5 15
1937 3,610 33 7
1940 1,255 0 0
1942 920 0 0
1945 133 0 0
1948 341 7 1
1951 1,013 1 4
1954 1,708 30 0
1957 1,677 10 3
1960 1,089 5 12
1963 302 1 2
1966 225 9 3

Based on this clear common usage, all of these articles, categories and templates should be renamed consistent with "Rocky Mountain Conference" (RMC). What do others think? Cbl62 (talk) 02:51, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Clarifying note re scope of proposal: The current Division II conference does seem to go by the name Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). I'd be fine with leaving the main article under that title in deference to current Division II usage. (There was a near-complete turnover in conference membership by the mid-1960s -- the conference was at its peak as a major power conference from the 1910s through the 1930s with members including Colorado, Colorado A&M, Utah, Utah Agricultural, Wyoming, and BYU.) Accordingly, my proposal is limited to changing the season categories and standings templates for the years covered by my data (inception through 1966). • Some further research suggests that the RMAC variation came into more common usage in the late 1960s and became prevalent in 1970 and 1971. Cbl62 (talk) 05:28, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Cbl62 Not that I don't believe you, but I haven't seen it referred to the Rocky Mountain Conference before (and I have done some searching on the conference because of my alma mater). I have seen both RMAC and RMFAC, though. For us non-subscribers of Newspapers.com, can you provide links from either Newpapers.com or even links from the modern era where the conference might be referred to as the RMC? I can still see them in the text below the news clipping if you link them. Corky 19:21, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Corkythehornetfan: As noted in my "Clarifying note" posted on November 1 (above), the "RMAC" usage began to get significant usage in the late 1960s and became prevalent in approximately 1970. My revised proposal is therefore to rename the standings templates and season categories only for the period before the "modern era" when the "RMC" usage was prevalent. The templates and categories for the period after 1966 would remain unchanged. The year 1957 provides a clear example: RMC gets 1,677 hits compared to only 10 for RMAC and 3 for RMFAC. That's a factor of 167-to-1 in favor of RMC. Likewise, 1926 usage is 892-to-1 in favor of RMC. With such overwhelming evidence of common usage, the pre-1967 standings templates should refer to RMC, and the categories should be "19** Rocky Mountain Conference football season". Some sample clippings of this historical use are provided here: 1914, 1925, 1935, 1941, 1952, 1957, 1960. Cbl62 (talk) 03:59, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cbl62 Good grief! That’s pretty clear up above, I’m not sure what I was thinking! Thanks for the clippings, and I apologize for not reading more carefully. I support the proposal. Corky 05:11, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There being no objection, I will start the process of moving the standings templates and categories for year prior to 1967. Cbl62 (talk) 05:30, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cbl62, do you plan to leave Template:1909 Colorado Faculty Athletic Conference football standings as is? Also, there should be be some mention in this article that "Rocky Mountain Conference" ("RMC") was the common name for the conference for whatever years it was. Jweiss11 (talk) 00:52, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't analyzed the 1909 season, so I will leave it alone. Will tweak the lead to this article. Cbl62 (talk) 01:09, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
