German/Bavarian "Heiland"[edit]

I hesitated first to link my Bavarian (Boarisch) article "Heiland" to other languages because - though it means essentially "Saviour" in the meaning "Jesus Christ", it's also used in my Bavarian Saint Sturm Bible for the God of the Old Covenant, whenever he is mentioned as a supporter of his believers in emergency. Moreover, as an old Germanic word, it originally meant any "saviour", just as with "osagyefo" in Ghana. 13th-14th century prototypes[edit]

According to this free paper on DOAJ, "there was a statue of the Blessing Christ holding a globe placed ca. 1230 in the northern part of Amiens Cathedral, and there is a fresco by Simone Martini (before 1341) in the tympanum of the Avignon cathedral, also showing the Blessing Christ holding a globe." Those examples are cited as "prototypes" of the Salvator Mundi's iconography.

Concerning the origin, the paper also adds £Salvator Mundi most likely derived from a fusion of two earlier types of depictions: Maiestas Domini (enthroned Christ blessing, usually in front view, holding a book) and the Holy Face (which emerged from the Veil of Veronica and the Image of Edessa)."
