What is the Sea of Faith?[edit]

The Sea of Faith website says:

The Network explores the implications of accepting religion as a human creation; promotes this view of religion, and affirms the continuing validity of religious thought and practice as celebrations of spiritual and social values. The Network has no creed. It welcomes people from all faith and non-faith traditions.

I think the article's claim that the network's "aim is to explore and promote religious faith as a human creation" is plain wrong; promoting "religious thought and practice as celebrations of spiritual and social values" says nothing about faith. Also, "spanning the positions of liberal religion and religious humanism" is too narrow - I'm certain that some of the members are outright atheists who denounce faith and hold reason as an absolute. I suspect that the Sea of Faith Network avoids many attacks from religious groups because it has this appearance of eing a faith oriented "religious/philosophical group",so I'm not going to edit the article. In writing this atricle I simply decribed the SoF as it decribes itself. I don't think that the main body of an article is the place to discuss the coherence of the position. However, I was intending to insert a section later entitled Criticism or Discussion where evaluation could be placed. But as this is an encyclopedia I don't think it can include the opinions of just anyone who comes along. We need to quote crits from well-known writers - both religious and secular (for attacks have come form both sides). I have a bit from Ernest Gellner that I will include. I would encourage Tlhall to insert some crit material.

Merging with SoFN[edit]

Can I lend my support to the request to merge Sea Of Faith Network into Sea of Faith. Surely the two topics are pretty much synonymous?

Can someone help to redirect this page to the Sea of Faith page in that case, since none of us feel confident to do this given the rather complex instructions by Wikipedia. Thanks.

Ed, see my comment at Talk:Sea Of Faith Network. I'd rather you did it as I'm not sure all the info has been transferred from SoFN to SoF. (But I'm happy to do it if you'd like me to!!) Best, Mattmm 20:17, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, merging has been completed. Thanks for the help! (Egrabczewski 21:20, 10 February 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Categorising SOF as an aetheist organsation[edit]

While membership of SOF includes many people who would describe themselves as atheist there are many members who would strongly object to that epithet. While it may be a judgement of observers and critics of the movement (even an accurate judgement) that members are "really atheist" that does not seem to me good grounds for categorising it as such. In an encyclopedia promoting a NPOV the organisation's self-classification should be the deciding factor. If this is a substantive critique of the movement then the body of the article should contain cross-references to works that discuss this opinion with possible repostes by defenders. It seems to me therefore that the link with atheist wiki should be deleted. Do other contributors agree and, if so, how do we do it? (redherring 09:17, 23 August 2007 (UTC))[reply]

There is no point of view. They think that God is completely made up. Thats what atheism is, it doesnt matter what reason they believe it for. If you dont believe in God, your an Atheist, if your unsure, your agnostic, ect. ect. ect. 24.187.19.109 (talk) 07:24, 3 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation needed[edit]

There is now a separate article about the television programme of this title, so can some one please create a disambiguation link? Thank you, ACEOREVIVED (talk) 20:43, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
